Welcome to the Games of the XXXIII Olympiad

Members Online

The Paris 2024 Olympic Opening Ceremonies will take place along the Seine River and at the Jardins du Trocadéro starting at 19:30 local time. It will feature performances highlighting the culture of Paris and France, the Parade of Nations, and the lighting of the Olympic cauldron. French President Emmanuel Macron will be expected to formally open the Games.

Details

The Opening Ceremony will notably be the first one not to take place inside a stadium. Instead of a traditional Parade of Nations, athletes will be transported by over 90 boats along 6km of the Seine River, starting at the Pont d'Austerlitz and ending at the Jardins du Trocadéro across from the Eiffel Tower. Along the way, they will pass by various landmarks including the Notre Dame and the Louvre, as well as many venues for the Games. The rest of the Ceremony and official protocols will take place at the Jardins du Trocadéro, including a laser show.

Meanwhile, performances showcasing France’s history and culture will happen alongside the Parade. Thomas Jolly, the Artistic Director of the Opening Ceremonies, stated that these will depict 12 scenes that both play with and challenge the clichés associated with Paris. Performances will occur on monuments, water, rooftops, bridges, in the sky, and on and artificial islands. Over 3,000 dancers, actors, musicians, and acrobats are expected to feature, including French ballet dancer Guillaume Diop, pop star Aya Nakamura, Celine Dion, and Lady Gaga.

AITAH for not tipping after overhearing what my waitress said about me?

I (30 F) was at a restaurant last night with my mother. She was meeting my boyfriends mom for the first time. We're punctual people, so we got there about 30 minutes before our reservation. We got seated with no issues. It took the waitress 20 minutes to get to our table even though the restaurant was pretty empty. Right away I could tell the she didn't want to wait on us. She didn't great us with a "hello," she just asked what we wanted to drink. We told her, and I noticed that she didn't write our order down. It took another 15 minutes for our drinks to get to our table, and they were wrong. It's hard to mess up a gingerale and a vodka soda, but she did.

My mom pointed out that she didn't order a pepsi, and the waitress rolled her eyes, took my mother's glass and disappeared. I excused myself to use the washroom shortly after. I had no idea where I was going, so I went to the entrance to ask one of the hostesses there. While I was walking up to the server area, I overheard my waitress talking to some other hostesses. She was pissed that she had to wait on "a black table" because "they" never tip well. My mother and I were the only black people in the restaurant. She wasn't even whispering when she said it either.

I wasn't stunned, but her lack of effort started to make sense. I interrupted their conversation, and I asked where the bathroom was. I didn't let on that I had heard what they were talking about. When I got out of the bathroom, my boyfriend and his mom were already seated. My boyfriend and his mother are white. When my waitress saw the rest of our party, she did a 180. Her service was stellar. She took notes, told jokes, and our water glasses were always filled. She didn't make another mistake.

Because the night went so well, I decided to treat everyone and pay the check. She gave me the machine, and I smiled at her while I keyed in "0%" for a tip. She didn't notice until after the receipt had been printed out. By that time, all of us had already started to leave. She tapped me on the shoulder and asked if I had made a mistake on the bill. I told her I didn't think so, and looked at the receipt. She asked if there was a problem with her service, and I said her service was fantastic, but since I was a black woman, I don't tip well. Her face went white, and she kind of laughed nervously, and I laughed as well. I walked out after that, but my boyfriends mom asked what had happened.

I told her what I had overheard, and my boyfriend's mom said that I should've tipped her anyway because it shows character. She seemed pretty pissed at me after that. My boyfriend and my mom are both on my side, but I'm wondering if I should've just thrown in a $2 tip?

What are old games you can 100% say stood the test of time and someone who's only played modern games would still really enjoy?

Games from from PS1 era and back. Console, handheld, PC, doesn't matter.

For me I'd say Super Metroid and Link to the Past, both of these games I played for the first time I think 20 years after their release and the lack of QoL features from older games just weren't a problem at all with these two.

Also I suppose a lot of Squaresoft RPGs from the PS1 era, but I'm not sure if they have truly aged well or if I'm biased from having played a lot of them back in the day. That said maybe Capcom's Breath of Fire IV would be one that actually stood well the test of time.

This post is a stealthy recommendation request for some older titles for me to go back to. Mind I was playing most of the games from back then as they were released but I suppose I missed a few gems specially in Nintendo handhelds.

THE BOYS is an irreverent take on what happens when superheroes, who are as popular as celebrities, as influential as politicians and as revered as Gods, abuse their superpowers rather than use them for good. It’s the powerless against the super powerful as The Boys embark on a heroic quest to expose the truth about “The Seven,” and their formidable Vought backing. We also discuss the satellite shows Diabolical and Gen V.
