The US president’s resignation speech was delivered by a hollowed-out career politician who appeared defeated by everyone except his family and closest of aides.

And so it was with US President Joe Biden’s resignation, effective in six months time, that will place him just outside the top 10 shortest-lived presidencies of the 46 since independence.
