Weekly r/audiophile Discussion #107: What Guides Your Purchasing Decisions And Has It Changed Since You Started?
"Any power level from 250 mW to the rated power shall be obtainable at all frequencies within the rated power band of 20 Hz to 20 kHz without exceeding 1.0% of total harmonic distortion plus noise (THD+N) at an impedance of 8 ohms after input signals at said frequencies have been continuously applied at full rated power for not less than five (5) minutes."
Many amplifiers out there, especially tubes and Chi-Fi, will have to cut their advertised power output by anywhere from 2-10X, or even more!

Let's have fun with this.
Or?
Did you design your bed around your system?
Resonant modes energizing the bedframe?
I need another pair of speakers like a hole in the head, but I recently came across a pair of semi local Vandersteen model 5's. I had a pair of 2CE signatures that my ex-wife pilfered in a divorce. I did like the 2CE sigs, but I ended up relegating them to a second system when I purchased a mint pair of Klipsch Chorus II's.
Does anyone have any experience with these speakers? The system I would use them in is currently sporting a pair of Paradigm Studio 100 V2's.
If so... impressions?
I had a very nice Kona mono block tube amp setup with Merlin speakers many years ago but got rid of it all when kids got into the picture and now I'm eyeballing the C700/Triton setup as a simple re-entry into having an actual stereo again.
I'm new to being an audiophile but my father has been a long-time audiophile/inventor. He doesn't know much about streamers, bluetooth or what's available online for audiophiles. One of his friends said they tried several streamers and noticed no difference between top of the line streamers and cheap $50 stuff from Amazon. He gave us the cheap one he had and we tested it to much disappointment.
The only song that impressed me was Englishman in New York - Sting and it was a vinyl recording on YouTube. FLAC files weren't too impressive and the vinyl recordings were somewhat better. I did max out quality settings too.
With the exact same pre amp, power amp and a good CD Player the sound coming from STS Digital CDs and Jazz at the Pawnshop sounded so much better than the music from HQ Playlists on YouTube.
Is this because of my the Streamer I'm using? Are the HQ Playlist and FLAC files on YouTube not as good as other sources? Could it just be those CDs are exceptionally produced and mastered?
I would appreciate any advice in pursuing a better sound quality from bluetooth/streaming. I noticed the imaging was no where near as good and the sound wasn't getting dynamic enough (with the exception of the one song mentioned)
Hi everyone. My dad passed away a couple of months ago and left me his entire collection. He was a hard core Audiophile who built his own speakers and could talk for hours about electrical engineering level stuff. I am 26/f and not as well versed in anything like this but I’ve been learning little by little with the help of Reddit. His prized amps are a Yamaha MX-1000 and a Sansuiau717, which I see are pretty great and tbh the sound quality is awesome. A good family friend and fellow audiophile gifted me a Marantz 2250 that I’ve been using only for the record player since I’m a little hesitant on moving all the cables around constantly.
I’d like to always grow the set up but I have no idea where to start, any tips?
EDIT: here are some links to the set up and some relaxing boogaloo jones. () () ()
Hey. I got a question. About studio monitors, generally speaking, the most well known brands included, also budget-friendly ones. If for example an experiences, pro audio engineer were to be in a room where the room didn’t affect the frequency-curve of his studio monitors, and he got some monitors, randomly, picked from a choice of well known brand. If he did not know the speaker, and he then started to mix a song, until complete, without reference-checking with other speakers/headphones/devices. A mix mixed entirely on monitors he used for the first time, without checking out music that he knew what sounded like on them, being unknown to the specific frequency-curve of the monitors. Do you people believe he would make a mix that sounded balanced, generally balanced, to a point where casual listeners wouldn’t think or consider that it was a unbalanced sound, on these monitors that he did not know the characteristics of? Are studio monitors, even with their differences in characteristics of sound, generally this accurate when it comes to representation of sound?
I want to replace my Adam A7X monitors (used them for 10+ years) with something smaller to resize my desk. It's only used on my PC and thus I can use EqualizerAPO.
I saw that today there are a lot of studiomonitors/speakers with integrated DSP. Is that a huge plus? Any downsides in getting speakers without DSP, buying a UMIK-1 and installing REW + EQAPO to optimize the frequency response?
