7 months in Accra

So, I moved to Accra 7 months ago with my family without knowing a soul. I was discouraged from coming by my family, friends and ppl online. I understand because nothing has worked the way I planned it but everything has been moving in my favor. I still feel the same way I did the first month I came here. I love it! I don’t want to leave at all. The only thing I’m missing from USA is the beef and relatives. All that said, these are the things that I’m still chewing in my mind while trying to adapt to Ghana

  1. Social status: I’m treated really well here being American, ppl think I’m rich and intelligent or extremely gullible upon meeting me because I have an accent. Back home I’d have to codeswitch just to get a job. Ppl assume I’m high class but I grew up poor and have been homeless twice in my life. a Liberian girl told me that I was out of her league after speaking to me for like 10 mins. Being from a poor family makes hearing things like that bittersweet.

  2. Friendship/relationships: I’ve made one male friend and 2 female friends since I’ve been here. everyone in Ghana is friendly but most ppl have ulterior motives when trying to befriend me. It makes me really uncomfortable when ppl go into servant mode around me. Especially when it’s not their job to serve me. I’ve heard from many that the majority of Ghana girls just want what they can get out of you and then they will move on. I’ve heard this from Ghanaian men and women as well as Nigerian men and women.

  3. Nigerians: being a Nigerian in Ghana seems to be like being African American in the United States. Everyone thinks you’re up to no good and you’re ruining the country with criminal activity, violence and hyper sexuality.

  4. Economy: I don’t know how you guys do it. I’ve heard stories about how someone only makes like 700 gh a month and there’s no guarantee that you will be paid on time or at all. How can you save? How can you pay the bills?

  5. Communication: there’s no room for subtility here. I found that being very direct is the most effective way to speak with folks. I also need to find someone to teach me Twi. Sure I’m able to get around fine but I feel I’m missing out on a lot.

TLDR: everyone who told me not to come to Ghana was wrong 😛. I’m still adjusting and want to learn Twi

Is Teshi (Accra) dangerous?

I came to Accra by myself one week ago to do some research for my masters thesis. I‘m currently staying in an apartment in Teshie. Today my uber driver told me that i should get out of Teshie, because it‘s too dangerous for a tourist (he told me he got robbed there once). Do you guys heard similar stories about Teshie? Do you guys suggest i should move out? I have 2 weeks before i fly back to Germany.

Btw, im very cautious by not having a lot of cash with me, only walk on busy streets, very basic clothing etc. and i don‘t think i stand out too much (not white but eastafrican background)

Edit: Just realized that there is Teshie and Teshi lmao

Reclaiming lands in Accra?

Hi all,

My parents bought land in Accra while residing in the US. It was stolen from them. My aunt used to work in the Lands Department and made sure all of their paperwork was legitimate. It seems others have since taken the parcels and built on them. I’m wondering if it’s possible to get it back. My mom is concerned because she’s heard stories of people being killed over land but I don’t think it’s fair that they bought and registered the land only for it to be stolen from them.

Can anyone shed some light on this situation?

How much daily for family of 3 Accra?

Hi all, I'll be in Accra in December with my partner and child for a month. We are staying in a family home so don't need to pay for accommodation, but would like to do some touristy things as its my child's first time visiting.

I am just wondering how much I should budget for daily necessities. We will of course go to some pools, restaurants, and days out to places like Aburi, but that aside, how much should I plan to budget for food (we can cook at home too), Internet data per person (we are moderately heavy users), and other day to day necessities?

Thanks in advance!

Looking for walkable neighborhoods in Accra to determine hotel

I will be visiting Accra for a business trip. During the day I'll be in meetings. I am looking for an area where I can leave the hotel and walk around. cafes and restaurants would be great, but it doesn't have to be posh. It would be great to get a feel of Accra local vibe in late afternoons/ early nights. Suggestions are appreciated.

Housing in Accra

Hi! I'm gonna go to Accra for 5 months with some friends for work. We need housing, for acceptable prices. The first realtor we spoke to suggested 2000$ per person for housing, I guess she just tested the waters...

What is a good area to live in for young europeans who like to see the culture? Are there areas we should avoid? Whats reasonable pricing?

Thank you in advance!

Accra SkyTrain

Abeg don't kill me 🤣 this country!

I just found out about a proposed Accra SkyTrain which git cancelled (I think public transport/rail is so needed). I used to stay in Legon and hate that traffic. The whole country needs railways too!

My question is - does anyone here know what the 5 proposed routes were?

My first visit to Accra

I must say, I came to Ghana and wasn’t expecting much and was open minded. Honestly the city is beautiful!

I worked my way around the hustlers and the thief’s that vulture the airport, I have walked around for a bit and talked to locals. I love Accra because I see the potential in our people and the city itself.

When I finally got a Uber driver that wasn’t trying to hack my ride like I already got in the car he was very informative because I am a straight forward and honest person. He feels the same way about things and says he wishes he didn’t grow up here only because he wish he knew what the weight of the situation is here.

In my honest opinion, Ghana needs a few good leaders willing to contribute and eventually good government officials. We gotta start somewhere and that’s why I am here. I love this place, I love my people, but I know there is better for us out there and the future of Ghana.

So much so that I have posted on here a few times looking for people who want to be the change they want to see like I am. I will keep posting on here every now and then to keep bringing good people together but we will build a movement to shake the country. It’s a marathon not a sprint 🇬🇭

Best Rice and Chicken in Accra?

Years ago, I used to go to a place in tema called Southern fried chicken who made an amazing dish of fried rice and charcoal grilled chicken. The place closed down and I’m still looking for a place to replace it. I tried papaye’s chargrilled chicken, but it’s smothered with a very strong ginger paste, which is ok, but it’s not what I’m looking for. Where in Accra can I find some good fried rice with charcoal grilled chicken? The kind you can enjoy with shito and coleslaw? Bonus for a place with good hygiene. I don’t mind street food, but I’d like the place to be clean.

Formation of The Accran City State (Accra)

Tonight I am happy to announce the formation of CivMC’s newest nation, The Accran City State. Accra will be governed as a directorial system until a sufficiently large player base is built, at which point a democratic republic will be formed. The members of The Provisional Directory of Accra (PDA), the governing body of Accra, at the time of formation are as follows:

  • sadchamp

  • Forged_TK

The land known as Accra is the island located at x=4800, z=600. Additionally, shown in the image below: (Figure.1) The claim of Accra extends from its border with Rivia and Iria, through the jungle, to the western swamplands where it meets a Danzilonian claim. Accra also claims the tropical island directly south of the swamplands.

Shown below (Figure.2) is the temporary flag of the Accran City State, this flag will be replaced after a planned competition is held and a winning design is selected. An in game variant will be made as well.

Until Accra has built the crucial infrastructure needed to host new players, we will not be accepting new citizens for a limited time, except for unique exceptions between close ally's and friends of Accra.

However, feel free to join our discord, and be among the first to know when we open Accras residency applications!

Is it me or is Accra a food desert?
  1. Sprawl means longer trips for food

  2. I read in an article the other day that onions are increasingly being held as luxury foods as a result of recent shortages

  3. Relative lack of takeout and dining options, esp for local and regional African cuisine

  4. Trade in local fruit and veg is dominated by lots of tiny market traders, so difficult for economies of scale to be reached and exploited
