I love role-playing games. I’m working on a role playing game I hope to publish next year, I hoped crit awards would have looked at it. Now, I know their inclusivity doesn’t include me.

At least they won’t be part of GenCon this year

Aegos and Role Playing Games

I feel like this question will be a niche in a niche, but any RPG players here? I love playing pen and paper Role Playing Games but loooog ago I discovered I hate playing characters that are similar to me and really like to play those who I usually imagine in exciting, hmm... aego scenarios (not involving sex, because things that excite me are something else). Then I’ve red about aegos not liking first and second person fiction and separating themselves from the characters of their fantasies and the connection suddenly became obvious for me.

What do you think? Do yo have similar experiences? Or maybe completely different?

This option hits So dang hard in relation to questing cliches in so many rpgs. If you choose it, you probably choose it after going through so many role-playing games before you got to this point in Bloodlines. It's one hell of a mega-meta dialogue option.

Starfields persuasion mini game is actually a pretty interesting take on the RNG dilemma of dialogue checks in role-playing games

Starfields persuasion mini game is actually a pretty interesting take on the RNG dilemma of dialogue checks in role-playing games

Before people bring out their pitchforks, I'm not saying starfield has great role playing overall. However one particular mechanic related to it caught my attention. When it comes to persuasion checks in games you either have it being solely based on skill level, RNG or perhaps both. The system in star field goes for the latter.

Whenever you try to get your point across the mini game activates, you have 3 chances to make arguments choosing from different possibilities with each their own chance of success and approval point gain. Get enough approval points in these steps and you succeed. At first this just seems like the same thing with literal extra steps but this seemly simple system has some unapparent benefits.

-it being several steps can lessen the impact of RNG feeling cheap since it doesn't hinge on one failure but rather your character failing many times.

-If a reply makes sense in the current context it has a higher chance to succeed, which can help with both RP'ing different characters and aiding players that just want to succeed as long they pay attention.

-outside of just having skills that increase the chance of succeeding a step, you also have skills that unlock new kinds of possibilities like being able to bribe to get your point across

-it can create more natural conversations since there's more back and forth.

Now the implementation in starfield ain't perfect but still great and I feel this kind of system deserves a try in other games too, it's a good mix of making the mechanic dynamic while still being versatile enough to be used across a big non linear game as you don't need to make every possible reply unique.

What do you think? Would you like to see it in different games or have suggestions to improve it?

Role playing games to keep you busy?

(I wanted first person games but didn't seem lile there were many suggestions.

Games I'll check are stalker, red dead 2, and far cry)

Only have access to pc and xbox

Outside the obvious being fall out, cyberpunk and skyrim. My favourite games was witcher 3 and state of decay 2

I couldn't finish the two though because I'm like a quest hoarder lol What else would be fun to try I know I'm also thinking of doing far cry 4.

Lots of quests, or side activities and resource gathering I need more first person or third person because until I can get a good monitor playing any 2d games on a 43 inch monitor is practical not fun.

Also mostly singleplayer I'm also on pc

Before anyone says dark souls I have tried it just dosent cluck with me

Mostly Difficulty yes, and also grinding if I wanted a soeffic weapon the grind to get it was just not fun at all

I enjoyed combat but I think it was just levelling up was the issue for me it was slow and painful especially if I wanted to use a certain weapon

That was my experience for elden ring but I don't think I enjoy it to much

(I did not enjoy tears of the kingdom I preferred breath of the world if I'm being honest)

LATE ACT II SPOILERS AHEAD

This is my first DnD type game, just crossed 100 hours on it tonight. Only other "RPG"s I've played and liked is cyberpunk . Didn't finish witcher 3, RDR2 , didn't like Starfield. I started Bg3 as a wizard because I like to be an intelligent character, and wanted to be a powerful magic wielder. But in combat I always felt like the weakest link. Not enough attack, constantly missing spells, very low HP. I chug health potions every time im in combat. Was so annoyed that my wizard kept dying in many instances, way more than any other character in my party. Laezel and Karlach boss combat for me. And shadowheart became a heavy hitter in act II.

I wanted to feel powerful so I took the tadpoles after swearing not to use them for a long time. I didn't really find much use for those powers but I kept taking worms hoping to unlock better powers. Now end of Act II, The emperor gives me the astral worm, i don't want to become half ilithid but he says i crave power. And I failed a 21 wisdom check to refuse tadpole, the narrator said it's too late because I've already used the ilithid powers too much to dominate and survive, i can't resist anymore.

I was bummed out that I turned into a half ilithid but I had a respect for the game, i for real wanted to feel powerful and it made me feel the consequences for my actions. Now I'm just planning to embrace my quest for power and roll with it for the rest of Act III. Hopefully I can end the game Still as a good/neutral tav.

Question - I’m curious to know if Arbitrators design the whole campaign from the beginning, similar to how DMs do for role-playing games. How much time do you dedicate to Role-Playing Games?
r/osr

This is a subreddit for news and discussion of Old School Renaissance topics. We primarily focus on D&D (LBB, 1st ed. AD&D, etc.) and the retroclones. Other Old School games (Traveller, Runequest, Tunnels & Trolls, et al) are of course open for discussion. This is *not* a place to rant about how (your least favorite edition) sucks! In fact, I hope discussion arises about how later editions do things right, and how to incorporate them into OSR-styled games.
