BO DIDDLEY "Drive By" 1999 - Tales From The Funk Dimension 1970-1973

From 1970 to 1974, over four albums, Bo Diddley went through some significant musical changes, taking a funkier direction than his better known, earlier recordings...
...At the time the albums were not greatly admired by the majority of his older fans. But with the passing of time the rise of funk and hip-hop cultures has resulted in a re-evaluation of Bo's early '70s albums, with modern producers and DJs plundering the old vinyl for the rare grooves and backbeats (as used by De La Soul in 'Buddy', for instance). This carefully chosen collection selects from all four albums - The Black Gladiator (1970), Another Dimension (1971), Where It All Began (1972), Big Bad Bo (1974) - for 20 tracks ranging from funky jams with slashing guitar rhythms and furious organ solos to urbane jazz-funk with sophisticated brass arrangements. Calexico "Spiritoso" 2012

As the healthy number of live albums in the band's discography attests, Calexico are always a solidly entertaining live act and no stranger to documenting their performances...
...Still, Spiritoso is special enough that the group made it a Record Store Day exclusive for its original release. Documenting German performances with the Radio Symphonieorchester Wien and Deutsches Filmorchester Babelsberg, the album boasts a well-chosen set list drawing from Algiers, their most recent album at the time, as well as 1998's The Black Light, 2003's Feast of Wire, and 2008's Carried to Dust (they even perform "Crystal Frontier," a hard-to-find track first issued on the European version of their underappreciated third album, The Hot Rail). Hearing Calexico perform songs from a large portion of their career allows their strengths to come to the fore, and Spiritoso's highlights make the most of the drama that their music has had since the beginning. Beginning with the fan-favorite medley of The Black Light's "Frontera/Trigger," the album's orchestral treatments make the most of Calexico's spaghetti Western majesty and whispery noir undercurrents. "Black Heart," which has the kind of stylishly world-weary melody made for strings and brass, is another standout, along with the other Feast of Wire cuts "Minas de Cobre" and "Quattro." The orchestral arrangements aren't as integral to "Epic," where the insistent acoustic guitars take center stage, or "Two Silver Trees," where the strings add a little more depth. Even if Spiritoso isn't quite the definitive live Calexico statement, it's still an elegant album that should please fans who enjoy the band's concert documents. - by Heather Phares

The Apaches "The Apaches Take Off!" 2018

The Apaches are GO! The twangy engines provide a great soundtrack for a cruisin' adventure. Or for just hangin' out. I would call this a perfect album. Fantastic flight that I will ride over and over. - Hermi Flagglenack
Awesome album from an incredible band! The Apaches are easily the best band I've found on this app and I'm very happy with my purchase. The baseball t's are high quality. As a guy accustomed to white t-shirts, it's nice to find a cool shirt with a simple design I really dig. I would buy again 10/10. - Peter John Cashpenny

The Hellbenders "Today We Kill... Tomorrow We Die" 2004

Dangerous, scenic in the stubby guitar ambush way "Desert Standoff" is much like soundtrack sequences for a real live spaghetti western. A kind of interlude. Spaghetti Surf Instrumental Stereo "Unmarked Grave"!
The Hellbenders are a great spaghetti western / country / cowpoke combo featuring 3/4 of renowned surf/instro band The Volcanos. After releasing two great CD's for Estrus Records, along with a whole bunch of 7"ers, most of the band decided to do a "side-project" and came up with this fabulous 21 track release. Featuring 9 instrumental songs, 8 vocal songs and 4 short instrumental interludes, this is great listening for fans of The Sadies, Ennio Morricone, Friends Of Dean Martinez, Johnny Cash and Calexico.
Here's what the press has said about 'Today We Kill...Tomorrow We Die':
Well, all I can say is, it's about time! There's just nothing better than when a great band finally gets around to their debut CD and it's easily as good as I could hope for. The Hellbenders have been teasing us with brilliant spaghetti western surf for a long time. Now, a full album of brilliant music, surfed and polished and sequenced like an Italian soundtrack release. The band includes a number of very cool vocals with rich surf-spaghetti guitars too, including "All I Can Do Is Cry," Johnny Cash's "Big River," the delightful "A Gringo Like Me," "Run, Billy Run," "The Ghosts Of Boot Hill," "Gunfight At The O.K. Corral," and "On The Run" - from: http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/hellbenders
The Hellbenders:
Rick Mills (guitar and vocals) assumes the old-west persona of Arch Stanton, Chris Flanagan (guitar) becomes Leo Marsh, Bill Bowen (drums) is Lonesome Billy, and Bill Rowe (bass) is Tombstone Bill. All are Detroit music veterans, with Mills, Flanagan and Bowen also playing in the 3-D Invisibles and the Volcanos.

The Things "Things" 1988

This album rocks. It's so much better than their 2nd album Outside my Window. Back is the groove and energy of Coloured Heaven, excepted harder, more garage. - Sumogirl
One of the more obscure bands of the Southern California paisley underground scene in the mid-'80s, the Things fell prey to the fundamental shortcoming of the movement -- their style was wholly derivative, and their material not nearly as good as their '60s heroes. Certainly songwriter/singer/guitarist Steve Crabtree's chief musical inspiration was Arthur Lee, and the trio's 1984 debut, Coloured Heaven, was populated with innocuous folk-rock songs that, though well-intentioned, were not fit to be Love/Arthur Lee rejects. - Biography by Richie Unterberger

The Maggots are slowly but surely becoming a garage punk institution in Sweden, and are working hard to invade Europe and the rest of the world with their tuff big beat garage rock'n'roll with roots firmly planted in the soil of 60's garage and 50's rock'n'roll!

Calexico "Algiers" 2012

Calexico had intended to record the follow-up to 2008's gorgeous Carried to Dust somewhere in Europe, but when those plans fell through, they chose America's most European city, New Orleans, as their destination...
...The change of scenery is definitely felt in Algiers, named for the neighborhood in which they set up shop. While Joey Burns and John Convertino haven't suddenly thrown Cajun and zydeco into their repertoire, there's still a rich stew (or should that be gumbo?) of sounds here. Calexico are never obvious, and their homage to the Big Easy is neither grandiose nor simple; instead, they incorporate subtle hints of the city's storied musical heritage into their own distinctive style. Algiers is bookended by songs that allude to "The House of the Rising Sun" in their pedal steel melodies; Convertino emphasizes the jazz side of his formidable percussion skills; and "No Te Vayas" is a fitting, and dramatic, tribute to New Orleans' Latin and jazz musical roots. This time, however, Calexico's attitude, while not exactly boisterous, is a lot less studied and restrained than it has been in years, resulting in a more down-to-earth set of songs than they've delivered in quite a while. "Splitter"'s big brass and drums make it louder than the band's past few albums combined; "Sinner in the Sea" strikes sparks with its mix of blues and Latin rhythms, marking the first time in a long time that Burns' voice has risen above a whispery croon; and while "Maybe on Monday"'s bitter but ambiguous farewell to a lover may not be a true murder ballad, it has the sharp sting of one. However, the band still deals largely in shadows and echoes, and Algiers has plenty of those. "Puerto" and the title track feel like they could be a part of Calexico's catalog from way back when, while the single "Para" shows off their eerie, hypnotic side and the lovely Americana pop of "Fortune Teller" and "Hush" recalls Garden Ruin's folky idylls. While these tales of people trying to escape their pasts aren't quite as masterful as Carried to Dust, Algiers has some great songs and a vitality that Calexico should try to hang onto in the future. - by Heather Phares

The Apaches "Musica Surfica Vol. III & IV" 2017

Desert surf rules! Good tunes packed full of groovy vibes. Had this on a loop for hours and still not tired of it. - Hermi Flagglenack
In late 2015, the Apaches suddenly appeared out of nowhere with an EP called Musica Surfica, Vol. I, and by March of last year this had combined with Vol. II for a full album of retrofitted surf music straight out of the desert. The Apaches are Eric Hirsch (lead guitar, organ), Adam Gold (drums), Sully Sullivan (bass guitar) and Jack Escobar (rhythm guitar). They make authentic surf music in the vein of Link Wray, Dick Dale and the Ventures.
On Musica Surfica, Vol. III & IV, they sound even better and explore the soundscapes those pioneers found over 50 years ago. This is perfect music to play at any beach-themed tiki party. Like their influences, some of the material here borders on Ennio Morricone territory, and if you’re keen on the idea of making a spaghetti western, I’d recommend getting the Apaches to perform the score for you. The band’s name is almost certainly derived from the 1960 hit by the Shadows, which had vast influence in surf music circles and eventually hip hop.
Hirsch is the visionary, and he should be working on films for someone, because he has a knack for arranging instrumentals. The entire band sounds stellar on this release, and I truly hope someday they consider a limited run on vinyl, because that’s the only way it could sound even more authentic. Even the titles sound like tracks found on legacy records: “Pistoleros,” “Ghost Ride,” “Look Out!” and the obligatory “Surf Surf Surf.” The only cover here is the traditional “Dark Eyes,” and that’s a stunner, as well. If you’re taking a trip to the beach, I suggest you have this on repeat. - MITCHELL HILLMAN

Surf-a-tomica "A por la ola del Melillero" 2019

Surf-a-tomica was born in 2018 when several musicians from Malaga with extensive experience decided to start an instrumental surf rock project...
...Their sound mixes their rock and punk influences with the most classic surf, seasoned with a touch of Malaga roots. Songs infused with the energy of the sea that they contemplate daily with the smell of spices, western, border and surf.

The Surfaris "A Surfer's Paradise" A Tribute to Don Murray 1996 (pt. 10 of 11)

28 years ago, A Surfer's Paradise benefit concert for Don Murray was held at the Strand in Redondo Beach, CA. It was the biggest concert of it's kind, 10 hours long with classic and contemporary surf bands including the Surfaris, the Chantays, the Belairs, the Lively Ones, the Tornadoes, Davie Allan & the Arrows, Jon & the Nightriders, the Eliminators, the Insect Surfers, the Halibuts, the Surf Kings and the coup de grace....the Mermen (Don's favorite band). Three of the original Turtles showed up, Al Nichol, Jim Tucker and Chuck Portz. No....not Mark and Howard (Flo and Eddie). The people that were there for me that day are still there for me. I will never forget... ~ Jamie

The Things "Outside My Window" 1986

1986 vinyl album featuring swirling psychedelia with fuzzed guitars, killer harmonies and excellent melodies. Give this one a listen. - Voxx Records

Calexico "Edge Of The Sun" 2015 - disc 2

...It's almost as though these songs are so sunwashed that they just can't be truly dark, even when the band tries its hardest...
..."Beneath the City of Dreams," a tale full of dealers and getaway cars, might have had more heft if it had appeared on Algiers or Carried to Dust, although Gaby Moreno's cameos almost get it there; similarly, the "days of sorrow" referred to on "Moon Never Rises" feel distant, not recent. On the other hand, the gentle melancholy of "Follow the River" and the squinty-eyed, implosive "Bullets & Rocks" feel genuine. As always, Edge of the Sun is beautifully crafted, from the gorgeous arrangements and chord changes on "Coyoacán" and "Woodshed Waltz" to "Miles from the Sea"'s poignant lyrics, which fall somewhere between a short story and a lullaby. Still, it's hard to shake the feeling that this album is a little perfunctory compared to what came before it, and at times, it's predictable: "When the Angels Played" is the kind of dusty, strummy song that sounds like it should have a harmonica solo -- and sure enough, it does. It's notable that Edge of the Sun's brightest highlight is "Cumbia de Donde," a celebration of the footloose life. As pleasant as the album is, this time it feels like Calexico are just passing through. - by Heather Phares

Calexico "Edge Of The Sun" 2015 - disc 1 2011

Calexico have had a chiaroscuro career: after each of the band's more somber efforts, they tend to return with something lighthearted...
...Such is the case with Edge of the Sun: arriving after Algiers' journey into New Orleans noir, it feels like a working holiday -- probably because it was close to one, with Joey Burns, John Convertino, and company spending ten days in Coyoacán, a Mexico City borough, for inspiration (later on, they recorded in Los Angeles and Athens, among other locales). Despite its Mexican beginnings, Edge of the Sun often tips toward Calexico's affable Americana, with particular success on "Falling from the Sky"'s tumbleweed pop and on the gently insistent "Tapping on the Line," which is elevated by Neko Case's clarion vocals. On these tracks, Edge of the Sun recalls Garden Ruin and Feast of Wire, although the latter album negotiated its sonic and emotional twists with more drama...to be continued... - by Heather Phares

The Maggots "This Condition is Incurable" 2001

Explosive garage punk from Sweden!
Stockholm's The Maggots explode with energy and a snotty sneer on this premium garage rock revival disc. Their fearsome fuzz and gruesome guitar sound is vital, visceral rock-n-roll. There was a garage wave in Scandinavia in the '80's and Mans P. Mansson (guitar/vocals) was part of that movement as part of Wylde Mammoths (one of the first bands to record for Crypt Records), Crimson Shadows and Friends. Bassist Steffen Hellstrom was also in Wylde Mammoths and Friends and Jonas Lundberg (drums) has a past in Slammer and A-Bombs. These journeyman psychedelic rockers combine their experience and vigor for this more-than-suitable follow-up to their excellent debut LP, Get Hooked (Low Impact Records). Also, available on 10" vinyl, this CD edition includes three bonus tracks taken from the Gonna Make You Pay 7" on Bad Afro. While their originals rock sufficient to carry this disc to dawn and back, they include some righteous covers: a searing "Boy From Nowhere" (DMZ) and the workout for their two guitarists from The Turpentines, "Heading For The Texas Border," also covered by the Flamin' Groovies. - By Tom Schulte
Personnel:
Mans P. Mansson (vocals, guitar); Bob Perry (vocals); Tommy Andersson (guitar); Anders Öberg (drums, bongos); Jonas Lundberg (drums, percussion, background vocals)

Bo Diddley "A Man Amongst Men" 1996

Sadly, this was to be Bo Diddley's last studio album. There's a couple of misses but overall this is a real fine album. Thx Bo - Toxxy
The opening track of Bo Diddley's underrated 1996 CD "A Man Amongst Men" is called "Bo Diddley Is Crazy," and if the man who brought primal ooze to the Creation of rock 'n' roll still doesn't get the attention of (to name the most obvious), "the King", its at least in part because Mr. Diddley's as unreconstructed as they come. Check the footage of Bo playing "Who Do You Love" with the Stones in 1995, flanked by Ron Wood and Keith Richards. Bo first toured with these guys in 1963, yet as they pay close attention to cues from this genius, icon, and innovator whose work is part of the Stones' DNA, you can't help but notice that they still can't predict when he'll erupt with a sudden flurry of rusty barbed-wire guitar. The cliche is that Bo brought that shave-and-a-haircut rhythm to the teen riot structure, but that's reductive in the extreme - for his rhythms are never that simple (and reward close attention), and he is an innovator on too levels to be pigeonholed - as sonic visionary, his homemade electric guitars buzzed and sputtered with visceral force and menace or shrieked like Johnny Thunders' subway train, often while Jerome Green's maracas sizzled up top; furthermore he recorded at his home studio long before younger, more compensated rock'n'rollers dreamed of such a thing. With the emphasis on layred, intricate rhythm patterns he was a funk godfather, and from the start conciously strove for something primal and cathartic, a direct link to what he calls the "shout" mode, the very embodiment of "jungle music"....And, he was unique in working with a series of fine women musicians at a time when girls with guitars were virtually unheard of. Bo's claim to immortality rests with a series of superb singles and albums made between the time he was signed to Chess early in 1955 and the coming of the British Invasion bands who idolized him (besides the Stones, there are The Yardbirds, Pretty Things, Who, and countless others, and much later The Clash invited him to open their 1979 debut tour of the USA).
From the mid-60s on, of course, Chess was more interested in the emerging soul market, and was guilty of trying to "update" its roster of middle-aged geniuses for the youth market. Bo Diddley made some strong, and always singular records, but his fat years were past. "A Man Amongst Men" is an attempt to set Bo loose in the studio minus psychedelia, wah-wah pedals, or covers of The Band and Creedence classics. UK producer Mike Vernon understands the artist, and helps make a record that strives for a timeless aspect, albeit one rather padded with Big Names. Bo is reunited with greats like Billy Boy Arnold and Johnnie Johnson from Chess' golden era, and longtime friends Ron Wood (especially) and Keith Richards are neither fawning nor overpowering. Even (Yikes!) Bon Jovi's Richie Sombora doesn't get in the way of what is a slightly uneven but frequently strong blues/Bo album. "...Is Crazy" is terrific, in the tradition of such gems as "Cookie Headed Diddley," There are two or three solid blues grooves, cut with a competent rhythm section. The best tracks are with Wood, who toured with Bo during the late '80s. "I Can't Stand It" is such succulant funk a la "Hey Negrita" from "Black And Blue" that one wishes Vernon didn't cut the track (supposedly it ran on for over ten minutes) down to 5:17. And "Oops! Bo Diddley" and the title track feature Wood's super, sympathetic and slippery guitar stylings. The low point here is "Philosopher G.'s" (Bo's son) weak rap track ("Kids Don't Do It" - guess what 'it' is), but you can skip over it and enjoy what is the best Bo Diddley album in several decades, now sadly out of print but available at a price no fan can resist. --Amazon customer review
