TIL: You can prototype VisionOS apps without code and test them in AR mode on iPhone

I had some cool ideas for Vision Pro apps, but I didn’t want to spend weeks learning Xcode and then pay $4K for a headset just to test them out 🤑

I figured out a way to prototype these ideas in just a few hours without writing code using Figma and Reality Composer. I then ran them natively on my iPhone and iPad, and interacted with them in AR mode, without needing a headset and without having to install any apps.

A Vision Pro app prototype made in Figma+Reality Composer running natively on iPhone

This workflow is great for testing app ideas cheaply, sharing prototypes with others to get feedback, and then iterating quickly before starting to code the acutal app 🙌

This video shows one of the prototypes in action. Notice how I can interact with the app using touch, and how it responds to my actions.

You can try the prototype for yourself, and learn how to create your own here.

Let me know what you think or if you have any questions!

Free apps everyone should have on their device

These are couple of apps I think should be on everyone's android. These are my personal recs, so expect bias. These are all free apps, meaning they are free to use and don't have any ads in them. Musicolet and Zarchiver have an option for payment that will unlock some extra features though. Most of these apps are customisable and I customised them to my liking. Lets get into it.

LocalSend: LocalSend is a free, open-source app that allows you to securely share files and messages with nearby devices over your local network without needing an internet connection. This is a minimal file transfer app with focus on intuitive UI.
Screenshots: Receive Page, Send Page, Receiving files, Settings

Musicolet: Musicolet is a small yet powerful offline Music Player for Android, which organizes and plays local audio-files stored on your device. This is a powerful audio player with emphasis on customisation and extra functionalities like audiocutter built in.
Screenshots: Now Playing, Queue, Special Functions, Customisable Widget

Zarchiver: ZArchiver - is a program for file management (including managing archives). You can managment backup of application. It has a simple and functional interface. This is a minimalist file manager with emphasis on archiving.  Screenshots: List View, Grid ViewAccess System files through Shizuku, Dual tabs

Image Toolbox: Image Toolbox is an powerful picture editor, which can crop, apply filters, add some drawing, erase background, edit EXIF or even create PDF file. This app have tons of features that focus on managing image files.

Dark Note: Dark Note is a feature-rich and intuitive note app for your notes & checklists. Dark note makes it easy to add notes and checklists. Its design is very easy on the eyes and is also easy to use.

Do people use e-reader apps designed for specific devices on their tablets or phones?

My experience is with books for print but a client has had me transition a complex book from print to reflowable epub. I don't have the resources to do extensive testing so I'm trying find out what most people use.

We expect most of our readers will use e-reader apps on Android or Apple devices or a computer. Do people often use Kindle, Nook, Kobo, or Pocketbook apps - or third-party apps like FBReader on their phones or tablets? Or do they stick to Apple Books or Google Play Books?

Really can't live without these must-have apps on every Macintosh computer (note some require a PowerPC or System 8)

ClarisWorks - Best choice for writing or spreadsheets, you can even draw in it! Microsoft has some stuff like this but ew PC!

HyperCard - This is really complicated but I think the idea has a lot of potential: you can create different things that "link" together.

ResEdit - Really useful for tweaking the system and other apps to your preferences.

~Aaron - If you're like me and your Performa can't handle System 8, you can get the cool Copeland style with this extension!

After Dark - Don't let your monitor get burn in!

QuarkXPress - The absolute best tool for graphic designers on the market!

Audion - Really cool music player with lots of "skins"!

Spectre Challenger - Very cool game with amazing graphics, I can't believe how real it feels!

StuffIt - For opening all those files your get off AOL etc. Just be careful because it won't work with those "zip files" Windooze users try to share! ((This one cracked me up because they are still alive and kicking!))

Hi, these are some of the apps I can live without after 6 years of using this nice OS. these list has no particular order. all of them are equally useful in my daily routine.

https://preview.redd.it/ive-been-using-mac-for-around-6-years-and-these-are-some-of-v0-tqz7lcx7n8bd1.png

Pearl

This one lets you have a small mirror right in your Menu Bar, ready whenever you need it. I started using this one a lot when I started my home office job and I wanted to have a Quick Look at my hair (I have messy curls lol).

(Featuring my guitar)

Itsycal

This Amazing app Lets you have the date right in your menu bar, you can set it up however you want, the app lets you add a bunch of extra stuff. and you can link your calendar for special dates etc.

https://preview.redd.it/ive-been-using-mac-for-around-6-years-and-these-are-some-of-v0-pz08gspmn8bd1.png

Magnet (Paid) / Tiles (Free)

This is the best window manager imo, it was like 2 bucks but I also added an alternative that I came across months later. it has many options and it's pretty useful.

https://preview.redd.it/ive-been-using-mac-for-around-6-years-and-these-are-some-of-v0-3ku9w5crn8bd1.png

AppCleaner

hHave you ever tried uninstalling an app only to encounter leftover files and folders? this app gets rid of them. just drag the app you want to uninstall and it will remove everything related to it automatically.

https://preview.redd.it/ive-been-using-mac-for-around-6-years-and-these-are-some-of-v0-f43ihu2wn8bd1.png

MonitorControl (Paid)

This one is for those who use external monitors, some monitors allow you to control the brightness from your Mac device but most of them don't, this app lets you control the brightness of any external monitor.

https://preview.redd.it/ive-been-using-mac-for-around-6-years-and-these-are-some-of-v0-3kyjl5m4o8bd1.png

DiskInventoryX

This one lets you have a nice overview of what's taking space in your disk.

https://preview.redd.it/ive-been-using-mac-for-around-6-years-and-these-are-some-of-v0-qs99dshao8bd1.png

TheUnarchiver

This one is only for those times coworkers send you compressed files in .rar format, which is something I utterly hate because most devices already come with .zip compatibly by default.

https://preview.redd.it/ive-been-using-mac-for-around-6-years-and-these-are-some-of-v0-34ie7hjeo8bd1.png

Extras that may not be for the regular user.

KittyTerminal

This has been my favorite terminal for a while, it's a terminal that runs on the gpu, which lets your processor take a break on those long coding sessions. I mostly use it for Neovim.

OneTab Extension (Safari)

This one serves the same purpose as the previous app, save your device resources, modern Macs with the M processors probably won't need it but my old intel MB air does, it gets hella hot when opening lots of tabs. this extension stores all of them in just one tab which also declutters your window.

Vivaldi

This is a highly customizable chromium based browser. the things you can do with it are amazing. you can setup shortcuts for doing quick [insert any website] searches right from the address bar, or remove it and only have it show up when pressing the focus shortcut (which is cmd + L for those who don't know. ).

ColorPicker

Just a color picker, pretty cool and simple

Barrier

This one is pretty cool, it lets you use the same keyboard and mouse on multiple devices at the same time, similar to Universal Control (Mac only) but this one includes Windows too and I believe Linux aswell.

WebTorrent

A simple torrent manager, quick pretty and easy to use.

vPlayer3

This is a VST host, it turns any VST into Standalone and lets you have up to 4 slots, you can combine instruments and effect, I use it when im just jamming with virtual synthesizers and im too lazy to launch my DAW, there's a newer version which lets you have audio input for instruments. but I think you have to paid for that one.

Audio software sadly deficient compared with Windows and Mac OS

I am disappointed that so few engaging VSTs, digital synths and software-hardware control interfaces are constructed or compiled for Linux.

Of course, there are some, even many, but it's plain there are so many and of far greater variety for Windows and Mac OS. I found one open-source VST, Ambience by Magnus, a reverb. I'm considering porting it -- I've written signal processing code, GUIs and device drivers in C and C++, have written in CUDA and Intel assembly language, too -- I could do it.

But it's astonishing for me that I see so few Linux VSTs and other audio software. Why, I wonder, are there so few?

Hello everyone,

We are thrilled to announce the upcoming Version 8 update, beginning with a grey release that will run from July 12th, 2024 to a portion of our users! This phased approach allows us to ensure the update's quality and stability before rolling it out to everyone.

This time, in response to a popular request from our community, we're introducing a feature that many of you have eagerly awaited: dimming your device's screen brightness when using an external display. We understand this has been a significant request, and we're proud to say we've made it happen.

Additionally, we have fixed the issue where vibration caused stuttering and freezing on the device. However, optimized haptics are still more effective for certain games or apps.

Many thanks to all the members within our community. Your inputs have been invaluable, and they have truly paved the way for future developments. Please continue to share your thoughts and feedback as we progress on this journey together!

Here's what's coming:

Xiaomi's software update policy is a gimmick

It is self explanatory. Any company can commit longer software support and ship the latest patch/update at the end of lifecycle of the device. I don't see any point of saying X years support unless you really commit to that. For Xiaomi, this is really a sales gimmick. I cannot consider current way of updates as support or commitment.

PS: I am not going to change the regions to receive an update. If changing a region to receive updates is the way, then Xiaomi should not sell phones to regions that receive updates randomly or once in a while.

(Xiaomi 13T Pro user. The region is the Netherlands. Such a pitty, it is actually a great phone.)

Is buying a Mac for making MacOS and potentially iOS apps worth it?

I’m currently using a Windows laptop and an iPad as my daily driver. Recently, I began the 100 Days of SwiftUI course and found myself really enjoying the language. Now, I’m at the stage where I know the basics, and I’m considering selling my laptop and iPad to afford a MacBook for app development. However, I’m hesitant due to past experiences with giving up on new programming languages/frameworks after a week.

One plus 12 software experience

So my one plus 11 died and I loved the phone. Camera was good but could have been better. So I had to buy a phone and went for 12 because of discount. Now after using op 11 for 9 months I was astonished at how the experience was polished. The op 12 experience is as bad slow, stuttering and buggy. They need to fix this powerful device.

Store pages of built-in Windows apps

Sometimes, you want to uninstall and reinstall a built-in Windows app, for whatever reason, but you're stumped on the reinstall part because you don't know where to get the app. Sometimes, you're on Windows Server or (God forbid) on a debloated copy of Windows and just want to install the apps. Your first instinct is to use Microsoft Store's search function, but it actively filters built-in apps from the results.
