Wayne Bennett’s Dolphins ruin Bunnies winning streak

The Rabbitohs five-game winning streak came to an end at the hands of their future coach, as Wayne Bennett’s Dolphins outlasted South Sydney to win 36-28 at Redcliffe on Thursday night.

In a game that was dubbed the ‘Wayne Bennett Cup’, it was a win-win for the Rabbitohs 2025 coach with a victory for his current team and an opportunity to see South Sydney’s weaknesses up close.

There were a couple of chinks in the Rabbitohs’ armour at Redcliffe, namely their end of set plays and goal kicking.

With star fullback and goal-kicker Latrell Mitchell out injured for a month, conversion duties were left to Cody Walker. And when Walker had the ball spraying outside the posts, the task was passed to Taane Milne, who couldn’t do much better.

The conversions ended up being the difference, with each team scoring six tries, after Jacob Gagai completed his hat-trick in the 79th minute to keep the Rabbitohs in the game.

Walker knew how costly the missed conversions were, telling Nine post-game that they let themselves down.

“In that first half, we took a step back with our discipline ... you just can’t give the Dolphins that opportunity,” Walker said.

“We fought to the very death and we let ourselves down with our goal kicking. I haven’t kicked since 2014 in reserve grade and you underestimate how hard it is, especially with pressure on. I have a new-found respect for our goalkickers.

“It was a disappointing result ... but I love that we kept turning up.”

The Rabbitohs play the Tigers in Gosford next week, while the Dolphins have the tough task of facing the Panthers in Penrith.

Gagai gets a hat trick with 45 seconds on the clock

It’s been a dramatic game, and we have a dramatic finish.

Jacob Gagai scores a hat trick with 45 seconds left on the clock.

Taane Milne takes the conversion quickly, but misses to the right-hand side. A miracle could have happened, but the goal kicking tonight really has been the difference.

The Rabbitohs have four conversions tonight. If they’d nailed them, they would be square with the Dolphins right now as the seconds tick down.

Johnston gets a double

Alex Johnston scores his second try of the night, but it’s too little too late.

Great footwork from Johnston, who was taken into touch just a minute ago when trying to score a try, but the Dolphins hold a hefty lead with not a lot of time left on the clock.

I’m not saying it’s impossible for the Bunnies to win, but it would be hard.

Dolphins go back-to-back with try for Fuller

Blink and you’ll miss it.

The Dolphins go the length of the field in their set from the kick-off, and Trai Fuller scores.

Fuller is on fire. Wayne Bennett has to find a starting place for him even when Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow comes back from injury. He’s just too good to leave on the sideline.

The right-edge speed of the Dolphins leaves South Sydney in the dust, and Sean O’Sullivan gets the points after coming up to support in the middle.

The kick from Taane Milne hits the upright and bounces out, which means the difference is onw converted try.

Gagai gets a double

An error from Trai Fuller give the Rabbitohs a full set in front of their line, and Jacob Gagai goes over for a double.
