I went to see Furiosa, and got a trailer for this little oddball. A 2023 TIFF selection that appeared to be nothing more than "Indian John Wick on a train." I wrote it off. So many John Wick clones, it's getting tiresome. I already thought Monkey Man was going to be Indian John Wick, and it turned out to be a pretty thoughtful picture. So Kill must be the dud, right?
Wrong again. This time, the marketing isn't as misleading as Monkey Man. It is what it says on the tin. Two Army Captains board a train taken over by bandits. However, inside this tin is hammerspace, and it contains a bounty of action, gore, drama, emotion, and character. I have nothing bad to say about this movie. I have not felt things this intensely in a movie for a long time, and in such a particular mix.
This is not a "Fun" movie. It asks you to commit to a basic setup, then pushes the pieces as far to the edge of the board as it can. It does a lot with a little. In that way, it is quite similar to "Train to Busan" mostly superficially. The movie avoids immersion breaking tropes, and ends up telling the most realistic story about how this kind of situation plays out. Even the villains have dimensionality to them
This is an 80's action movie come back to life, and if it wasn't such an amazing showcase, I'd be more upset that this wasn't coming from North America. The film is in Hindi, but the actors throw in an English word or phrase every 5 or 6 lines. I don't know what that's about, but between it and the Western pop culture name drops, it was nice to feel catered to. And that's without taking into account that this whole film is just my sociopathic fantasies with a narrative on it.
I know voting with your wallet never really works the way we want, but if you don't see the film to save Western cinema, at least see it to have a wonderful afternoon, and get the ultimate testosterone supercharge.
