AdAway - Is it still good?

Hello! I have recently spent about a year or so on iOS because the only phone available to me was an iPhone 5s but a family friend recently gave up their Galaxy S4 so I am pretty excited to be back on Android. My question is:

Is AdAway still a good way of blocking ads? The last update was a while ago so I wanted to know if the project was still a thing, if not, how do the rest of you block ads system wide?

LineageOS more powerful with AdAway FOSS ad blocker for Android!

A must have on your Android device, guys!

Not allowed in the google play store, we all know why. For all those who no longer want to make their data available to a data kraken for free.

Fulfils its purpose on the latest LineageOS. All advertising from all apps disappears as if by magic.

Github / AdAway / AdAway / releases ... - FOSS (latest v5.1.0 works perfectly on latest LineageOS v17.1)

Free your smartphone from google!

Has AdAway stopped working as well?

It seems like a lot more ads are making it through, especially in-browser. Hosts are up to date, so that's not the issue. Anyone else notice this? Is one of the other ad blockers working better these days?

I like to use a third party VPN in addition to an adblock on my phone. I didn't realize until today that Adguard supports root functionality that allows adblocking without creating a VPN. Now that I know this I'm definitely going to be using it over AdAway as the amount of features and functionality is so much better. I never thought I'd be able to get quick setting functionality individually for my VPN as well as my adblock, as AdAway didn't support this. It's the perfect setup for me and I'm very appreciative of the work that goes in to the development of the app :)

Screenshot after pressing Scan for adware in AdAway.

Dev claimed he is banned for list of repos, but this seem contradicting to his claims.

Does AdAway still make sense when using Bromite WebView and Bromite Browser?

Does AdAway still make sense when using Bromite WebView and Bromite Browser?

I have just moved from Kiwi Browser to Bromite and from the Chromium SystemWebView implementation that comes with LineageOS to Bromite SystemWebView.

Since I had AdAway already installed before that move, I'm wondering now if it still makes sense to keep AdAway installed, because Bromite comes with its own native adblock engine with filters from EasyList, EasyPrivacy, uBlock origin and others.

AFAIK the problem with ads is pretty much a web issue only nowadays, because if apps contain ads, they are pushed in a different way that AdAway can not prevent anyway (like for example the ad banner I can still see at the bottom of the screen in the app "Easy Currency" even with AdAway and its web server running).

Any thoughts on this?

YouTube AdAway Battery Drain?

Hello,

Long story short, I just installed the Lollipop Xposed today and am loving that one of my favorite things about kitkat is back. The only module I installed so far is YouTube AdAway (until Gravity Box updates) and I noticed massive battery drain. Is this something that anyone else had noticed?

I went and Greenified AdAway to see if that helps but I'm also gonna charge to full and see if I still get the battery drain. If it matters, I got prompted for a Google Play Services update today so is it possible that maybe the issue lies there?

Any help that can be provided would be much appreciated as I'd love to kick those YouTube ads to the curb (cough Vevo cough) and maintain decent battery life.

Using AdAway but still seeing ads? These two tokens of information should help!

[This post is intended for novice users]

If you are using AdAway and notice you see the odd ad, whether it's on the web or YouTube, you aren't out of luck.

While in AdAway, click on 'host sources', then 'add', and enter:

http://adblock.mahakala.is/

This should pretty much nuke any webpage ads you encounter.

While you are at it, install the xposed module installer if you haven't already, and download/install YouTube AdAway.

If you ever encounter another ad, simply open AdAway and download updated host files. You shouldn't see another ad unless out of date!

Edit: I know that advertising is a sensitive topic, especially for small scale developers on here, but there will always be those of us that just can't take advertising. This isn't intended to start a debate, merely help those that are utilizing ad-filtering.

Is AdAway still the best adblocker for Android?

Is AdAway [root required] the best adblocker on Android? Unfortunaly the application isn't in active development anymore:

AdAway is no longer in active development. If you like to take over the maintaining, simply fork it and implement fixes. I will only do basic maintenance like merging pull requests and releasing new versions.
