We as magic fans have not had the privilege of having multiple shooters on the same team. But not every shooter can be on the court and play at the same time. Clearly with the signing of KCP, he's going to start alongside Jalen Suggs. This is how I envision our rotation is going to be moving forward.
PG: Suggs / Anthony Black
SG: KCP / Cole Anthony
SF: Franz / Tristan DaSilva
PF: Paolo / Jonathan Isaac
C: WCJ / Mo Wagner / Goga
The players listed above are players that I consider "locked" for minutes this regular season. However, that leaves us with couple players fighting for minutes. That list includes: Jett Howard / Caleb Houstan / Gary Harris. Gary Harris seems to be the one that's going to have the most diminished role, considering the development of Jett / Houstan. But, out of those two, who are we prioritizing? Who are we going to push harder for development?
-
Jett Howard (High Ceiling / Low floor)
-
Pros: Legit flamethrower (JR Smith - archetype). Surprisingly athletic and high motor on the floor. Can create off the dribble and be deadly on the catch and shoot. Can go on high scoring runs.
-
Cons: Streaky player and needs to get hot in order to get going. Inconsistent on offense and sluggish on defense. Has questionable shot selection and can get "tunnel vision" at times.
-
-
Caleb Houstan (Low Ceiling / High floor)
-
Pro: More consistent, "make the right play" type of guy. Coachable and better "system" player. Can be trusted on kick outs and occasional good cuts and extra passes.
-
Cons: Can't create off the dribble. Limited offensive versatility besides 3 PT shooting. Slow feet / movement on defense.

My personal take is Jett Howard. Although he can be very streaky and have bad shooting nights, the confidence on the court definitely shines brighter than Houstan's. He has more offensive versatility with a unexpected quick first step. He can get hot and give you 10-15 bench pts and go on a run. They're both negative on defense but our team makes up for that. If he develops well, I can see Jett taking some of Cole Anthony's minutes as well.
What are you guys' thoughts on this? Who are we going to prioritize in our bench development? Who is going to be our shooter off the bench?
As far as maturity and ready to provide meaningful minutes. He looks like he’s been in the league for a few years already. I envision him as a key rotational piece for this team for a long time. Thoughts?
The only thing I’m walking away from summer league with is that Da Silva is taking Jingles minutes from day 1. Everything else is up in the air. Although, I’ve seen tremendous improvements from our sophomores.
Now that leaves Gary and Cole vs. Jett and AB. Jett is giving real Malik Monk vibes with his scoring ability (not saying a player comp but more so his role comp for the team, if that make sense). AB will make more sense if you have Point Paolo/Franz. I think they’re trying to get him reps at PG but ultimately he is still going to be in that off ball, connector role I feel.
Is there a world where we see Cole and Gary moved to 3rd string? I don’t think it would happen right away of course. It’s their spots to lose (and Cole may have worked through whatever off court stuff he had going on)
…but idk, I think there’s a real possibility that this can happen.
Some random thoughts to put out into the ether:
-
Anthony Black is not a playmaking point guard this team needs. Yet. There is definitely something there. I don’t know what he is, but he has some serious defensive instincts. He should get time, and in certain matchups, a lot of time. He’s gonna give people problems on defense and if he can be 35% for 3, he’ll be a full time starter soon.
-
Jay Huff can play in the NBA. I would love for it to be on the Magic, even as center #3. I think he could, in theory, make Wendell expendable. I know it’s summer league, but a big that can move like him can make a squad.
-
I am cautiously optimistic about Jett. His defense has looked better than I thought. He is going to be in a battle for minutes this year.
-
Da Silva has a low ceiling but high floor. He’s the type of player that is always on really really good teams. Might not be amazing at anything, but just solid at a lot.

What is Jarret Culver?

Any info would help. It’s not on my Amazon LP.
Personally I'm hoping for a playoff series victory in the first round and Paolo All Star, only expectations. Hopes are ECF which would be nice but there are a lot of good teams around us, Paolo All NBA and Franz All Star.
Obvious main goal is the Championship, and it will happen.
I have season tickets, but I'm also interested in some G-League games this season as I now work in Osceola County. Obviously the Magic schedule isn't out for a month or so, but how often do both leagues play on the same night, if ever? It would be dope to get some season tickets for Osceola, but not if that means missing The Bois downtown. Does anyone frequent both leagues and know the answer?
Lmao
Magic and Cavs are the first game of the Las Vegas Summer League
Magic: Anthony Black - Jett Howard - Tristan da Silva - Jarrett Culver - Jay Huff
Cavs: Craig Porter Jr - Emoni Bates - Jaylon Tyson - Zhaire Smith - Pete Nance
