Honestly that Jim Clark bit is my joint favorite piece they've done so far, alongside May recalled Ford vs Ferrari at Le Mans and my personal favorite Jeremy reciting Lancia vs Audi. I simply love these history lessons and I sincerely hope they do so, so many more of them!
As well as the Senna piece back on TG. I'd love to see them do this kind of content more frequently, because they do an incredible job of it.
That Ford vs Ferrari segment last season blew me away. This episode gave me a very similar experience. I wouldn't want these segments all of the time... But spread out like this they keep their charm and continue to amaze me.
They've all got great voices for VO.
The Jim Clark bit was actually the best thing I've seen out of The Grand Tour and I hope they go in that direction. Season 3 seems they're working out the kinks and really coming into the roles. (I thought Season 1 and 2 were a bit bland.)
The moment Hammond mentioned girls riding ponies, I immediately knew he was talking about his daughters. I just wasn't expecting that rant, lol!
Time to let your horse stroll into a barn, on Rant Street.
That piece on Jim Clark was nothing short of exceptional. I haven’t been that captivated by a segment in a long long while
It was up there with the Senna short from TG. Absolutely captivating.
The Ford GT versus Ferrari story was also spot on.
If there's one thing the Grand Tour does consistently better than old TG it's the history programs. I would like to see the show pivot to doing more historical pieces and less reviews.
They are turning Ford GT vs Ferrari into a movie. It is called "Ford vs Ferrari," it comes out this summer, and stars Matt Damon.
Still no trailer though, right? Only found out about this a week or so ago, really excited for this one.
And Harrison Ford?
Hope it’s as good as Rush!
I didn't know Jim Clark and I'd never seen that Senna piece from TG. That was incredible.
I hope when the guys are too old to drive around and get stuck in Columbia or powerslide around a corner they stay together and make a motorsport documentary series telling stories about great drivers or races or rivalries.
I also noticed how Jeremy didn't end that episode on a "bombshell" like he didn't end tonights on a "disappointment." You can really see the reverence they have for these drivers. I think that would come through brilliantly in a full length documentary.
Have you ever seen the Senna documentary that Clarkson mentioned at the end?
I'm sure there aren't too many folks in this subreddit who haven't but it's on Netflix:
https://www.netflix.com/watch/70170051
Enjoy...
I haven’t. I made it a point to watch it after I saw that film but still haven’t.
The boys could narrate any documentary and could very well replace Attenborough as long as someone else gives them the script
It was very well done. A hard watch at the accident segment
That part got to me, especially when he was trying to describe the aftermath of the accident. All these years later and it still seemed fresh to him.
Did Clarkson cry when he said good night? It sounded to me like he couldn’t quite get the words out at the end...
powerful stuff.
I just noticed this too, he had at least watery eyes.
I'm surprised they trusted Hammond with his car
I think that shows just how important that segment was to the guys because they didn't make that joke.
evil inside me was kind of waiting for a joke at the end of the segment where they would poke on hammond driving another f1. but damn this segment was masterfully crafted! could see ninja chopping onions at the end. 10/10
Looked better than most feature films in HDR...seriously beautiful
Agreed. Well scripted, excellently exposed. Entangling.
I really, really liked that segment. I'd love for more of them. I felt like I was back in the old-school History Channel.
No terrible disappointment to end on this week, as is appropriate.
I’m not crying, it’s dusty in here!
Seriously, great piece in Jim Clark. I’m not a huge F1 fan but I have seen Senna and Rush and this one was executed perfectly.
I'm not into Formula 1 either, but I was captivated by the documentary "1", which is also on Amazon prime.
That was a surprise Tbh, it was a fitting way to end the episode, but it flew by so quick I was a little shocked that it was over already
I think Clarkson was about to cry, he turned away and ended it very quickly
Welp personally the Urus and the A110 didn't hit my taste but the tests were done really well. Conversation street gave a good laugh.
But the part about Jim Clark was amazing. Going through those achievements and everything was interesting.
Really well done episode.
I'm sooo split on the A110. I have to say I do. Like the styling of it and every review I've watched raved of how amazing its handling is. The purist in me would rather have a Lotus Elise instead. The Alpine is too expensive and for much cheaper u can get a Lotus which is the benchmark when it comes to proper lightweight handling but the lotus is too stripped out. It'ld be a blast on the weekends or on a track day but u couldn't live with an Elise everyday. The practical person in me would get a Cayman instead. You get the fancy Porsche badge and you get a much more powerful car, which is still regarded as a benchmark for sports cars with all the creature comforts that would make daily living with it much more enjoyable. Then you have the Alpine which sits in between the Lotus and the Cayman. It's not as stripped out and unforgiving as the lotus but at the same time it's not as luxurious as the Porsche. It's like it's the perfect balance between the Lotus and the Porsche.
Then recently I saw the little Alpine trash a Bentley Continental in a GT3 race. It was almost cartoonish seeing the little alpine overtaking and pulling away from that boat of a Continental GT3. That totally sold me on the Alpine!
I love it for being the embodiment of a good, old-fashioned light sportscar, on par with the MX-5 and Elise. In a day in age when "light" sports cars weigh 3000lb+ and have 400-600hp, it's very refreshing to have something well-designed and modern that doesn't need tons of power to get the job done.
I actually like how it looks. Even though the three of them are on the fence.
Clarkson did say he likes the look of it while Abbie was driving it around the eboladrome. From some angles it looks a bit weird but from some like sideways it looks pretty sweet. And most reviewers have said it looks much better in the flesh than on a screen.
When they first showed the car standing still, I thought it was ugly. But it started to grow on me. I think it looks much better while it's moving; something about the way the car takes a corner makes all of its weird curves fit together.
Having seen one in the flesh I think it looks great.
It's a normal sized car, with a normal sized engine, with a normal mpg. It just so happens that it's very light which makes it fast, handles really well and has all the creature comforts you would want in a car.
To be honest Porsche just never interest me that much, this car does and if I had 50 grand to blow on a car I would get one in a heartbeat.
What race it was? There is racing Alpine, but it’s GT4 car and it way slower class than GT3.
I need to see this. Especially after watching the Australian Special on my lunch break.
Here's the race replay if you wanna watch the Alpine trash a bunch of supercars! https://youtu.be/ksztJMqHmPQ
Have the continentals ever been competitive in their class? I always see them bringing up the rear
I really like the way the Urus looks. I'm too poor to afford one anyway, so it doesn't really matter.
It certainly looks a lot cooler than the Benteyga and a boring Range Rover or Cayenne. But I don't see why anyone would need a fast SUV so I wouldn't get one either.
I think they used the same design as the new Audi Q8 they both look similar.
Hammond has a lot to unpack lol
Could you imagine him wasted? I can tell the other two have seen it more than once
There was that one time he took coke and talked for hours
Link? :D

The piece on Clark, outstanding
I love the special presentations they do on racing history, really top notch.
I'm only a casual F1 follower so I had never heard of him. Truly inspiring and amazing how great of a driver he was.
I read a list a while ago of the greatest F1 drivers of all time and Jim Clark was No.1. Like Schumacher had more victories, Senna had more pole positions and Fangio had the greatest percentage of victories but when it came to pure domination in motorsports, Jim Clark was on another level.
The guy was amazing. He's easily in the top 3 of all time IMO.
Good follow up doc on Amazon is "1", a history of F1 if you're in the mood for more of this type of thing
I held it till David Sims said "I'm sorry." and then I lost it to tears...
Same. That film moved me to tears.
Yeah really interesting. I similarly loved the Lancia v. Audi segment in an earlier season.
I am never, ever buying a horse
Or buy one for your wife
That was peak Richard Hammond. So good.
Hamster Rant needs to be a segment.
Oooh, and maybe they could occasionally get David Mitchell to join him.
Get Mitchell to script them for him. :-)
Renting one is fun
See. Good consumer advice.
Those shots of the Urus and 911 drifting through the snow were breathtaking. Absolutely fantastic camera work.
This is by far the best Production that those 3 have ever been apart of, and I mean everything from Top Gear to The Grand Tour. The Best.
The entire episode was an emotional roller coaster.
Jame's review was very passionate, showing his love for motor racing.
Jeremy's Segment of the Lamborghini was hysterical and extremely fun, showing everything that the Lambo can do without talking about it directly but showing it.
And Hammond's tribute to Jim Clark was beautiful, from the way it was shot, to the excellent use of archival footage, wonderful interviews, perfect use of score, and a Masterful edit. It made me laugh, got me exited about motor racing (and I am not a car guy), and brought me to tears at the end.
To all of The Grand Tour team, this was one of the best moments you have created. Thank you.
Never thought I'd see "best production they've ever been a part of" when discussing an episode where they raced around a giant penis shaped track. Hah.
Same, but it was done surprisingly tastefully. The Bell was in bellends 😉
And the Pair O' Bollocka. Magnificent.
"I've raced against a lot of dicks, but never on one." LOL
I totally want more of Abbie Eaton out in the field with the guys, like the Stig used to
As a standard format show (non-special) I 100% agree. This episode was masterful. From the review to the history piece to Hammond’s rant, it kept me hooked just like watching TG for the first time.
It took a couple seasons, but if these past episodes are any indication of where they are headed, then we are going to get the best content we’ve ever gotten from them.
The whole team (especially the editors) are doing their best work.
100% agree I was hooked this episode!
The dig at Romain Grosjean was brutal.
True, he is at least the 14th best F1 driver out there.
I’m always fascinated by the grand tour always managing to make the car reviews look interesting and entertaining despite it’s just a car going round a very small circuit
I don’t know anything about racing history. I watch this show and watched Top Gear for the antics and the bantz, but these segments they’re doing on historical races, rivals, and drivers are some of the best pieces of documentary filmmaking I’ve ever seen, full stop. The Clark piece was exceptional and, not even knowing so much as his name before watching it, my mouth hung open in awe the entire time. What a phenomenal driver.
Also, the reveal of the shape of the snow track is maybe the hardest I’ve laughed at The Grand Tour so far. Such a simple, juvenile joke but it’s just perfect.
I'd highly recommend the full length doc, Senna. One of the very best sports docs ever. As mentioned by Hammond, he idolized Clark and their careers have some parallels.
With both of these historical pieces I especially enjoy hearing about crazy things that were overcome to win a race. Senna with his car being stuck in 6th gear, Clark shutting his car off in the turns and holding his gearbox in place.
When he said bell end, and it showed the bell I laughed pretty hard, it must be said.
In regards to conversation street, that’s probably the only time Hammond has been tall.
Hammond tapping the top of Clarkson's head left me in stitches!
I love that bit. The "short Hammond" joke went a complete 180 degree turn!
"Ive raced against a few dicks in my time but never on one"
:D
I laughed so hard. She is great.
With the show moving away from tent segments starting next series, does this mean it’s goodbye Abbie? :(
Does that mean she won't be coming on, then?
I think their trying to expand her roll. It showing when they had her do the race against the Lamborghini
I found it fun the guys speaking of segregation, whilst having a female race driver.
And a damn good one at that.
Role* but I agree, The Stig followed them on their specials, she can too
Probably but I hope not. She's brilliant
Keep her around on a per diem schedule
I'd love if she randomly shows up for a special in the uk
She's pretty close to securing a drive in the second tier Australian Supercars championship for next year, so quite possibly she will be giving up her role on the Grand Tour.
Although as others have said below, I would love to see her make some cameo appearances on the specials for next season.
Same here, they could easily use her to test their cars in specials for instance, fly her in for a track lap and then let them know their cars are rubbish and fly back out. A la Stig except with a quick one-liner at the end, haha.
They could definitely bring her along in some capacity, a la the Stig's cousins on TG.
Given that she just came out, that could sort of have a double meaning.
I understood something else first and was like "whoa easy there"
clarkson was tearing up at the end. Quite a incredible story.
Maybe it's just because the truck episode left a bad taste in my mouth, but I felt like this episode was nearly perfect. Conversation street felt so natural, there was no attempt to be edgy, and I clenched up a bit when Clarkson started talking about the women's racing league but it ended up being really wholesome. The Urus/911 segment was awesome, and did not go on too long or anything. And the Jim Clark segment was amazing. I honestly was not familiar with him, and afterwards, I felt so moved. I seriously loved this episode.
I think Clarkson actually clenched up as well.. He seemed to be very careful not to be his usual self.
When Clarkson actually thinks about what he's saying, he's actually quite eloquent - he reminded me more of Historian Clarkson (thought out and well versed) than Top Gear Clarkson (saying the outrageous thing for humour/attention).
My favourite "Historian Clarkson" is his piece on the Victoria Cross.
Was the truck episode filmed within this seasons? It felt very early on more than the rest of the current season.
The truck film was shot between season one and two and was taken off the shelve. They better didn’t as the difference in quality was very clear
I totally agree! Night and day difference in quality between those episodes.
There is another French sports car maker they seem to have forgotten... Bugatti
People seem to think of Bugatti as German these days. I understand why, but I still find it a bit funny. It's not like we think of Lambo as German, for example.
I think it's because VW made a huge deal about how they built the fastest car in the world when they made the Veyron that everyone sees the Bugatti as a VW despite it being built in France.
Because Lamborghini has simply been bought by Audi / VAG, but despite the many changes it's still the same Italian company as before.
Meanwhile, Volkswagen didn't buy Bugatti the original French company, that folded for good in 1952. They bought the name from Romano Artioli, who had tried to restart Bugatti in Italy (EB110), they bought the historical premises in Alsace, and they created a new company in 1998. With the original name, where the original company operated, and under French law, but a new, entirely Volkswagen-owned and Volkswagen-run company nonetheless.
Lamorghini is still the Lamborghini company, just owned by VW now.
All that is left from the original Bugatti company is the name. VW fully runs Bugatti.
I guess you could argue Bugatti is only a Supercar maker these days?
The french aren't great at making supercars, but they sure are good at rally cars. Citroen, Peugeot, Alpine all have WRC champion cars.
Also Renault Sport makes some of the best hot hatches. The old Megane RS and Clio Cup were amazing.
That was my first thought but I guess all Bugattis are super/hypercars which isn't quite the same.
Conversation street took a detour down Rant lane
This episode was pure car porn! One of the best episodes of TGT to date. I'm also so glad I recency bought a 4k HDR monitor cuz watching the Alpine and Jim Clark films in 4K HDR was absolutely sublime!!! The filming in this episode was really on another level to anything I've witnessed in a car show before!
I have married a horse woman (not the centaur kind) and I already know it's going to get really uncomfortable when she watches it later and Richard's completely accurate rant comes up. I may sneak out of the house for the duration.
The Top Gear days were best known for the trio and their antics. I believe the Grand Tour will be remembered for the few times they did the historical pieces like tonight's bit on Jim Clark. Absolutely stunning.
Hammond, are you okay dude? Good God damn, that was a rant.
Problems at home?
It just didn't seem like some of that was scripted...he really went off. What did they actually cut from that rant?
It was so nice to see Indianapolis during the Clark bio. I've driven on the track before, and it's quite a feeling to be on the same course the best drivers in the world have driven on... shame we lost the F1 race.
Indy native here and huge Indy 500/IndyCar fan. Jim Clark's name comes up every may amongst the historians. One of the best of all time, Dario Franchitti who is also a Scotsman, tried to model his career after Clark. It does suck we lost the F1 race but they were killing the Speedway with their ridiculous sanctioning fees. Would love to see it return someday now that Bernie is gone....especially with the newly renovated road course that's more difficult than the original F1 course was.
Where can I get May’s ‘Oh Cock’ shirt he had in the trunk of the A110?
There's a drive tribe online store. Pretty sure it's sold there.
Lovely episode, I've never known Clarks story before.
James May's teeth tough, they're sure turning stereotypically british.
One would think he'd have the money to fix them.
No amount of money can fix his smoking habits.
Jim Clark's teeth on the other hand, wow.
Lol, my wife kept saying how handsome he was, and I just couldn't even argue. Perfect hair, even after driving a race
That was a helluva rant in Conversation Street from Hammond!
More like, as Jeremy appropriately described, "Rant Street".
Date a horse person, you'll get it, especially if you are the one financing it.
Hammond.. is that you?
The conversation street, especially Clarkson talking about the women racing league, I kept thinking 'This could go uncomfortable with a very quick comment...' but I actually liked how they had this relatively serious discussion about the issue, mention that their driver, Abbie, is a woman, and then promptly run a piece that shows her absolutely out-driving Clarkson on a 'Ri-dick-ulus' ice course, but they didn't over-state it like it was some huge favor to women that they have a female driver and 'See? We're progressive and shit! Look at our woman driver!'. To boot, goddamn that course looked like fun to drive on! I couldn't do it, that's for sure, but beautifully filmed too.
I absolutely love the mini documentary about Jim Clarke. I want more of these in future episodes.
The guy behind Clarkson during the tent segments had the most beautiful moustache. It was distracting and I was fixated on it. I'm glad that about halfway through the episode, they cut him out of the frame.
The past couple of episodes they've had some particularly distracting people lined up behind him. And I would not have used the word beautiful for any of them, but to each their own.
Top Gear was infamous for having really distracting audience members stand behind in the shots. Appartently Clarkson would move audience members around to have certain ones in the shot and all.
Usually they had, lets say, "front-engined" women stand behind Clarkson back in the day.
That is a perplexing decision, I'd rather have them in front of me so I could look than behind me.
Maybe they're trying to get a cheerleader effect going
May waxed a lyrical about Alpine but Hammond's video on Clark was brilliant right up there with Clarkson's piece on Senna. Clark was a pure genius.
This is the best episode of Season 3.
That end segment was utterly fantastic. Some wonderful work from The Grand Tour team there. Truly brilliant.
I really liked that Abbie got her own bit this episode. It felt cool seeing a professional driver on one of their less conventional tests.
They should have more Abbie
Unpopular Opinion: A Season of Specials is Not Special at All
As has been announced by amazon, the show will be made of pure road trips for the next season.
I believe this is absolutely the wrong way to go. Those road trips are a special thing because they are scarce.
Making them an super recurring bit will definitely dilute the quality and tire the audience.
Today's show has made my mind quite clear on this topic, although the banter between them is awesome the show is still an emotion roller coaster in the ''car show'' part, with segments that will live forever such as the McLaren Senna and the Ford vs Ferrari.
Very true. A special is like that once a year occasion you can settle down and watch them set off on a special adventure, almost like a tradition at this point. Not sure how they will pull that season off. But this season's not even half way done so there's no reason to worry yet.
I got the impression it will still be the normal main segments, just taking up the whole show. Like how you might have an epic race / cheap car challenge, a star in a reasonably priced car and maybe the news or a car review, instead they’ll just do the epic race or whatever else the primary segment was and stretch it out
This was a return to form for me. Proper reviews, no acting and the Jim Clark segment was fantastic. Felt like a good Top Gear
Besides Hammonds horse rant for a second week running I felt relaxed like I was watching the news. They are finally talking to each other not half each other half the audience.
To be fair, I think its starting to exceed Top Gear
Season 1 had the Ford v Ferrari LeMans rivalry
Season 2 had the Audi v Lancia Rally rivalry.
Since this season isn't over yet, it's too soon to say whether we'll get an X v Y rivalry, but the Jim Clark segment certainly filled the spot, in terms of being a history lesson.
Absolutely gorgeous and well made segment. If I had to find a downside, it would be that I have no frame of reference for those minutes Jim Clark won by.
"That's the last thing he said." I mean, fucking hell..

There are episodes in TG where they didn’t do challenges either. Where they just did solo films. There will be challenges to come, just you wait.
Most of TG episodes were individual segments as far as i remember.
People tend to remember the specials and the cheap car challenges and forget about all the other regular episodes of TG.
Hammond's horse rant was absolutely amazing.
I was blown away by his delivery, that was hilarious.
I genuinely think that the Jim Clark bit was the best "history" bit in the series.
I just want to hug hammond after those rants
This was a good, proper "car" episode. No pointless scripted fluff, a good conversation street, interesting cars and a fantastic film on Jim Clarke.
I think the Motorsport films are the things I'm going to miss most when they move out of the studios.
Anyone knows the name of the track during Urus review? Starts at 25:22.
Using the X-Ray on amazon prime, it says the song name is Catastrophe Anthem by Clark..
Sadly that's not it. Does X-Ray say anything else during it plays that track? It plays from 25:21 to 25:56.
From that segment, there is also Spirits by Claude Speeed and Familiar by Agnes Obel, but they don't sound like what you are looking for.
I took a closer look at the X-Ray and there was no one credited for the music at that specific scene you are looking for.
Oh well, thank you for trying regardless.
Alright, that was a kick directly in the heart.
I knew something was coming because I saw the picture of Jim on my ride home from work, I didn't think much of it at the time, then they started the segment.
I swear to god when they brought out his old racer I felt goosebumps, a cold shiver as they panned across it, it was simply beautiful.I was lounging on my couch but before long I was bolt upright, rapt as his peers described his preternatural talent. Holding a gear lever in place while driving or when they said to cope with falling fuel pressure he simply switched the engine off in the corners I was convinced I was listening to tales about an utter lunatic, and when they talked about his kindness and humility I was deeply moved.
Finally at the scene of the accident I was misty eyed, I could feel the sorrow coming through the TV. I could share, even if just slightly, the grief of everyone who knew this remarkable man.
Grand Tour, you've had some misses, you've had some triumphs, this week I think you managed an absolute legend of a segment. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart I thank you for a tribute to a man who deserved nothing short of magnificence, and you utterly delivered.
When is it available?
OK!
Oh man, what an episode! The piece about Jim Clark was absolutely phenomenal. Mays segment about the Alpine was great. The weak point in this episode was the bis about the Lambo, it wasn't bad, but it honestly felt like pretty much every other bit they did about modern street legal Lambos in the last couple of years. First complain how it has parts from <insert care manufacturer here>, then ask the questin if it's still a proper Lambo, race it around some track, come to the conclusion that it's fun but the "spitit" of a true Lambo is mission. We've heard that about the Aventador and the Huracan.
Well, nonetheless, it was a great episode. Especially after last weeks terrible disappointment.
It's probably because I've seen literally every single TG and TGT episode ever, but it feels like I've seen every car test or challenge at least once before. Especially Jeremy's track reviews are basically always the same.
After a while you start to see the pattern. If the start of the film is dragging the car for it's low value or shitty motor etc you know by the end of the segment he's going to say how it's got a ton of soul and completely lovely. If they start out with how cool the car is and what a monster motor it's got he will end up saying it's rather dull and not worth it.
All three of them do this, Richard a little less than the others.
The "Pair of Ballica" joke got the biggest laugh from me. This was a great episode.
this was just epic, goosebumps all the way through the Jim Clark part
That was a truly exceptional episode. The piece on Jim Clark was just incredible.
I'm not gonna lie, I had no idea who Jim Clark was before this episode, but by the end, I had watery eyes. Incredible tribute, and seeing Senna pay his respects was awesome. Wow.
There was a ton of good stuff this episode, so I wanna leave off the obvious bits and just say that I wasn't expecting quite that much nuance from them when they got on the W Series on conversation street, but hats off. I think Hammond really nailed it on the head, grassroots is important. Just wish they had Abbie on that bit, I'm sure she has opinions.
Yeah, Hammond had a great point! And his horse rant was hilarious
I'd just have to note that there's no fucking way Lotus would allow Hammond, of all people, to drive a priceless and extremely fragile 1960s F1 car around a track. At the very least, it's strange they didn't joke about it in the closing segment.
Gonna go ahead and guess it was a replica. No way they let anyone drive historic cars of such significance.
Great episode. A sure step up from the disaster that was last weeks.
May's film on the Alpine is nostalgic
This was my favorite episode so far. The Jim Clark piece was captivating.
Bravo.
The history segments are the ones that explain the best what loving cars means to me, why they're worth loving.
I love it when they do segments like the Jim Clark one. Senna, hunt and now this, informative beautifully crafted, and they are emotional. Had me almost in tears. Well done lads.
The Urus is impressive, but calling it an "Off Road" vehicle is stupid. Review it for what it is; a supercar with 5 seats. Driving around on the ice doesn't make it a capable off roader especially when your benchmark comparison is a 911.
The Jim Clark part was amazing, hands down the best part of TGT so far
Once again, what‘s the runtime of the episode?
What's the song at 24:01?
What I want to know is how many takes did they have to do before Hammond got the rant perfect???
James May reviewing the Alpina was a very important part of the episode. He actually expressed why he loved it, he put emotion into explaining it. It didn't feel like it was just "fast sportscar is good." That's something TGT hasn't had as much as TG the reviewers personal opinion on the car!
I think they could Abby more in the show. She could provide some good information on how a car performs at the limit, moreso than the boys can just dicking around the track.
