r/millenials

Millenials - the generation growing up near 2000 and grown up no later than 2020. If you can't remember bittorrent, wikileaks, George W. Bush, Dick Cheney, or Barack Obama, you're not a millenial. You don't have to remember myspace. Yes, a millenial is a millennial and neither are recognized as a noun, only as an adjective, so both are not even a word.

It’s time to march. Our generation needs to take control.

Supreme Court had no one outside of it last night. If there needs to be a call for action allow this to be it. If our leaders have no spine allow us to stand up. If our president elect is all words and dreams allow us to be physical and real. We as a generation and country cannot stand by while this happens. We must all put our personal lives aside, yes I mean work, yes I mean relationship problems, yes outside of deathly illnesses I mean health. We much stand up now or forever be put down. Not for one issue but for all. Not for one party but for all. This isn’t a call for democrats it is a call for everyone. Wake up and march before it’s illegal to do so.

Edit. This is not a call for others to lead or be first. This is not a call to die if you are on medication. This is a call to join me if you don’t have children or a 10k a month medication. And unfortunately the majority of you have refused. Make no mistake, apathy is the death of democracy and here is your proof. I’m being accused of trying to be mlk? How DARE I try to motivate a movement. How dare I. This country deserves what it gets at this point. “Ooooooo my health insurance.” What about your fucking freedom?

Have y'all had the "I can't help you" talk with your parents?

It was probably really bad timing but my mom asked me to accompany her on a business trip to Belgium because she's not comfortable navigating in another country by herself. I've been a few times and reading walking directions on Google maps is fairly easy. I went with the agreement that she would have to pay for everything because I don't have the means to eat out every single meal every day, pay for all my own transit, blah blah blah while I miss work (I'm self-employed). She was incredibly generous to do all of this but there was a meal that got dark because of a conversation I wanted to have in person with her.

We sat down for lunch and I asked her if she had a will for herself (she's in her mid 60s and isn't the healthiest person alive). She was a little taken aback but went with it and said she didn't. She's one of those that has always half-jokingly said "you're gonna have to take care of me when I'm old". So as the conversation progressed, I had to impress upon her that I moved 1000 miles from home, built up a support system and started chasing my VERY non-lucrative dreams because I wanted to have a life of my own. I then said "I simply don't have the funds or the time to drop everything and move home to take care of you if something debilitating should happen". I went on to explain that my resume is good for most entry level offices jobs and even if I did drop everything, there's no way I could afford to pay for all of the necessary care and whatnot making $18/hr at a call center. She attempted to tell me "well that's why you have to stick with a job for a few years and work up". I told her that's all well and good but I'm not going to go get an office job back home today just to prepare for my life as a nurse for her in 10 years.

All in all, she took it pretty well but you could tell she now had a lot to think about.

Is this a conversation anyone else has had with their parents? How did it go?

Edit: As I see on here a lot, I did not expect this to get anywhere near the traction it has and it's been up for less than an hour (at the time of editing). A few things to clarify before more of you think I'm the worst son. My partner and I live in the PNW in an 800sqft apt. My self-employment income could be $40k or $80k a year because it's all freelance. My mom suffers from anxiety, depression, newly found spinal issues and fibromyalgia. She would HATE it being cold and rainy 8 months out of the year so moving up here would be torture to her. That leaves me with moving down to socal where the rent is higher, where I'd have to give up everything and get a job where, maybe in a few years, I'd have enough to support myself if I lived in a cheap apartment with roommates, not even considering that I'd have to pay her rent, pay for myself to live and pay for her care.

The BIGGEST piece of information that I foolishly neglected to mention is my brother, who makes good money, has a 4 bedroom for he and his two kids who could very likely take her in.

The matter of me being unable to help isn't that I don't want to. It's that the logistics behind it do not make any sense at all. I would be in a worse situation moving back home to take care of her than I would be up here and I'd have 10x the expenses I do now. I would probably end up causing her health to decline faster than anything else.

Am I wrong for thinking that being thirsty for attention on social media is embarrassing at our age?

There’s a friend of mine. We went to hs together & we sort of keep up with each other. She’s recently separated from her spouse & she started posting "thirst traps" again. Her tits are about to pop out in every photo. And she posts feet pics, lip pics. Idk I find it cringe inducing & embarrassing at our age.

Or maybe I’m just annoyed cuz when she got married she stopped doing those kinds of posts cuz she became a born again Christian preaching marriage advice. Now that she’s single again she’s back to posting regularly again lol. She’s also one of those women that likes to put other women down to lift herself up. She posts pics of her ass saying how she’s natural and doesn’t need surgery. 😩

Edit: can some of yall relax with the "leave her alone" & "why do you care" responses.

I’m not bothering her seeing as I’ve not said anything to her nor would I. Also I didn’t post her name or photo so no harm no foul here.

My post was an inquiry into do you find this type of behavior among our age group cringy or not. This was never about this person. I was asking a question & used her & her posts as an example.

The point of my post was lost on most of yall because all yall can focus on is the example I gave so maybe I worded this incorrectly.

MOD

I don’t know if you have noticed, but this sub is closing in on 150,000 members. I’m sure, however, that you have noticed the uptick in the number of political posts, and the ensuing name-calling, divisiveness, and general hate. Guys, you’re wearing out your mod team with this shit, to the point where mods are asking to ban politics!

So, here we are.

We have gone through this issue before, and it seemed settled that we would flair posts correctly, and members could sort out the shit they don’t want see. Problem is, mods are having to change flair, ban users, and generally do a fuck-ton more work, just to be faced with the onerous task of policing the political threads for puerile bullshit.

I’m asking for input, but my inclination is to ban politics from r/GenX, and ban anyone at least temporarily, who posts about the subject.

All I want, and all the mods want, is a place where we can hang out without name-calling and shit like that. Some people, and you know who you are, think it’s okay to post insults and “GFY” just because we are supposed to be tougher than to react to it or some shit. The fact is, we are supposed to be mature enough not to post that shit to begin with.

Lecture over. Please reply to this thread with your thoughts about why politics should not be banned in r/GenX. While you’re at it, please show some appreciation for hardworking mods u/ayyabduction, u/Kaldaus, and u/RCA2CE. They are looking after you guys and your sub, and they deserve your respect and your gratitude!

ETA: To all of those who have said “just flair the posts” or whatever, you’re not paying attention: We have already tried that, and people are still hating each other.

We do NOT need to march; we need to stop buying - EVERYTHING

This is a counterpoint to this post.

To the current top comment's point, most people can't march because they would have to STOP going to work, which would have a devastating domino effect on their lives.

But you know what we can all START doing?

  • Cancelling our streaming accounts.

  • Cancelling our Amazon account.

  • Eating at home versus fast food.

  • Staying at home versus traveling.

  • Staying at home versus going to sports games or concerts.

  • Keeping our old cars versus buying that new/used one.

  • ... and on, and on, and on...

... all without losing our jobs.

You want to see things start to really change?

STOP. BUYING. EVERYTHING.

EDIT: I'm loving this discourse here and the varying opinions.

Perhaps we could collectively agree upon a particular day that would be the opposite of Prime Day / Black Friday / Cyber Monday... something like "FU Fascism Day" / "Antifa Day", where, en masse, people would cancel their Amazon, Netflix, etc. accounts.

My neighborhood is ridiculous!

I went to the pool because it's 111° outside and I was throwing my stuff into the locker and one of my neighbors said what are you doing? And I responded...Cooling by the lockers, getting kind of funky

And he responded - "Me and the crew, we're drinking Brass Monkey"

My husband rolled his eyes so hard I thought that he might go blind!

If you are a Xennial, you’ve officially outlived Elvis.

Elvis was only 42 when he died. It's hard to imagine that he did everything he did in that short span of time. But he did. And now we've all outlived him. Well, those of us still alive ourselves.

ETA: Okay, so fair enough. Not everyone here has outlived Elvis yet. Good luck. We're all counting on you.
