🗳️ Our guide to polling day
The headlines:
Polling day is on Thursday 4th July . You can vote if you are registered. You do not need to bring your poll card.
You will be able to vote for one candidate (list ) in your local polling station (where ) between 7am and 10pm .
You need to bring valid photo ID . You can use an expired ID if the photo still looks like you.
If you need to, you can apply for an emergency proxy vote before 5pm on 4th July .
Our voting system is first-past-the-post (explain ). The candidate with the most votes in your constituency becomes an MP.
The joint broadcaster exit poll (what is it ) is released at 10pm on 4th July - our first glimpse at what the result might be.
Results will come in throughout the night and early morning, with first results by 1am , and the majority of results by 5am .
There are 650 seats in the House of Commons, each representing a constituency, meaning 326 are needed for one party to have a majority.
