I just rewatched season 2 episode 6 and Alfie Allens performance as Theon is amazing. Or at least I think it is. I didn't realize how good he was until later in the seasons, but now I can't believe I missed it. In later seasons, I think his and Lena Headey's acting make the show work a lot better.

(Spoilers All) Alfie Allen/Theon Appreciation

I was firmly on the "I Hate Theon" train while reading the books a few years back, but between the acting/writing on the show and the pitiable situation Theon was in during DWD, I've grown pretty fond of the little Kraken.

While, the recent book made me feel sorry for him like I hadn't before, the show has added a level of depth to character that I didn't personally find while reading. The struggle in identity he is dealing with, his long/slow and painful downfall (made all the worse by knowing whats to come)... and most of all, Alfie Allen, have made Theon one of my favorite characters.

Alfie adds an emotional core to the character beyond the stuck up brattiness of the books. Even when the worse aspects of his character are evident, his eyes and posture betray his sadness. I can easily see him as the competent warrior, ladies man, and future broken pathetic creature that's to come. In a show filled with awesome performances, his is near the top IMHO.

Anyone else think Alfie/Theon deserves more love?

[Spoilers All] Alfie Allen about Jon Snow's parents

In an interview, Alfie Allen has stated that he knows about Jon Snow's parents. This has been discussed on this subreddit, but many people seem to have misunderstood what he said. They believe he said Jon's situation was similar to Luke and Leia from Star Wars.

Here is the important part of the interview for the lazy people:

What did you ask him about in return?

You know, I asked him about who Jon Snow's real parents were, and he told me. I can't say who, but I can tell you that it involves a bit of a Luke Skywalker situation.

Just to clear something up: He didn't say it was a Luke and Leia situation.

What he says is that Luke's situation is similar to Jon's. That probably means that Jon Snow believes his father is a different person than he actually is. Quite possibly, Eddard Stark wasn't his father.

  • Does that mean R+L=J is confirmed? No.

  • Did Alfie Allen say it was a Luke/Leia situation? No.

  • Does Jon have a sister or brother? It's possible but the interview doesn't contain information on that question.

  • Is Daario = Benjen? Is Varys a Merling? Possibly.

After seeing so many people on this subreddit talk about how Alfie confirmed Jon's situation was like Luke/Leia, I felt the urge to clear that up.

TL;DR: Alfie Allen didn't say Jon Snow's situation is like the Luke / Leia situation.

(Spoilers Extended) Unpopular opinion: Alfie Allen deserved the Emmys for best actor way more than Peter Dinklage

false

Now, don't get me wrong, I love Peter Dinklage. Other than the fact he's a tad too handsome for how book Tyrion is described he absolutely nails the character and is one of the best things about the show.

However, when the show was at its peak in terms of story (say seasons 3-5 which is when Dinklage start getting the awards), the greatest acting by far was Alfie Allen as Reek/Theon. It's not that Dinklange wasn't good it's just that Allen was amazing. Every scene you could see and feel him remembering the torture, remembering how it felt to be broken and I don't think he gets enough credit.

Also for the show at least, he has the best character arc in the entire series. People may argue Jaime, but I don't think it comes near Theon in terms of complexity and growth. You laughed with him (season 1), you hated him (season 2-3), You pittied him (season 4-5) and then you both had an admiration and sorrow him from season 6 onward. As bad as D&D's writing has become I think Theon is one of the beyter characters they've written for and a lot of that is down to how amazing Alfie (spoiler for s8 e3) was. Dying for Bran is a great end for him

(Spoilers Extended) Alfie Allen improvised Theon's "baptism" in the season 7 finale

(Spoilers Extended) Alfie Allen improvised Theon's "baptism" in the season 7 finale

If anyone here personally has the DVD commentary then they can add extra confirmation to this as this link (https://re-x.tumblr.com/post/168931600358/the-genius-of-alfie-allen) is the only source I can find claiming this at the moment, but it's probably true, and if so it only strengthens why Alfie Allen is my favorite actor on the show (inb4 Alfie Allen is underrated/isn't underrated meme), and that moment encapsulates why show-Theon is my favorite Game of Thrones character (Book Theon is my favorite character in fiction though).

My favorite Alfie moment this season isn't that though, it's the little split second stare/eye/head movement or whatever it is, that Theon does the moment after Jon tells him that he's a Stark and a Greyjoy, where you can literally see the wheels turning in Theon's head.

(Speaking of Jon, Kit is great in that scene and his delivery of the "fight together" line and "not compared to you" was really good and helps make the scene too me)

Not because that's what I ultimately take the message of his arc to be (I don't and I don't see that line as being in line with his book identity conflict or development), but because that moment (incredibly small) encapsulates Theon's overwrought struggle to find himself, when in reality he was already there and he was all he ever had to be, and that look from Alfie is Theon seeing what he never considered but was blatant and having that truth wash over him, it's all of the dots connecting.

Anyways great work by Alfie, that baptism was a powerful bookend for his arc up to that point.

Edit:

Speaking of that scene, I also love it for these reasons:

  1. First, it feels tacked on, not in a bad way or anything because I knew this conversation had to happen and wanted it to, but in that this was a personal struggle Theon had to confront that he certainly wrestled over through his time wandering Dragonstone/being around Jon, so the courage he must have mustered to break in at the last second to ask for a conversation with him is gargantuan.

  2. Jon and Theon's relationship has always been adversarial (though more of a simple teen beef), and Theon's always felt haughty/arrogant regarding him, so having Theon positioned at the top of the stairs, with Jon at the bottom, leading to them eventual meeting on equal ground was just beautiful.

I winced at each slow step Theon took towards Jon, but they were necessary for Theon to humble himself/show his change, and it was though he was walking through each of his mistakes as he approached.

An important bridging of gaps that Jon was gratious enough to accept, because it could have went either way and Theon was prepared to face it.

3) The dialogue, the questions Theon asked Jon were so simple on the surface, but they said so much about who Theon wanted to be, as he struggled to parse/ask them, and Jon's responses also had the subtext of healing the wounds between the two as they'd be on the same side.

My two favorite lines of the season are Jon saying "it may look that way from the outside, but I promise you it isn't", and Theon saying "I always wanted to do the right thing, be the right kind of person".

4) Because Theon and Jon have been foils since the first non-prologue chapter, which literally ended on Jon saying:

“I think not, Greyjoy,” he said. “This one belongs to me.”

So seeing that dynamic between the two brought fully around is fantastic, especially just weeks after George specifically talked about them being foils for each other in an interview himself.

Anyways yah that baptism

(Spoilers Aired) Thank you Alfie Allen

Despite how mediocre this season was, I think we can all agree that Alfie Allen as Theon/Reek this season was arguably some of the best acting the show has seen. The guy deserves some serious respect, he certainly won't get an emmy over Dinklage (not bitching, just being honest), but he absolutely nailed it this season.

Alfie Allen should have won best supporting actor last night. No offense to Peter Dinklage, but Allens strong performance as Theon Greyjoy is arguably the best performance of the entire season. Dinklage has won 3 times before this, Alfie deserved the win more than anyone else
