54 Days until Hockey: Adam McQuaid

Adam McQuaid is a 6'5", 209lb. defensive Defenseman for the Boston Bruins.

Background

Adam McQuaid was born on October 26th, 1986 in Cornwall, PEI, a town just outside of the Canadian Province's capital, Charlottetown. Growing up, he played for the Cornwall Thunder in the PEIHA. He was Student Council President in Grade 9. u/ThatsATacoJob noted here that McQuaid was always super friendly and easy to talk to in High School.

OHL Sudbury Wolves

When McQuaid was 17, he was drafted in 2003, his second eligible year, to the OHL with the 43rd overall pick (second round).
In his third and final year with the team, he put up 31 points in 65 games, and the Wolves made the OHL finals, losing to the Plymouth Whalers in six games.

Draft, AHL and NHL

Adam was drafted in the second round of the 2005 NHL Entry Draft by the Columbus Blue Jackets. He returned to the OHL, and was traded the next offseason to the Boston Bruins for a fifth round pick. In 2007/2008, he was assigned to the Providence Bruins, where he would score 9 points in 68 games, with a +14 rating and 73 PIM.

McQuaid played in his first NHL game in the 09/10 season. Through his first 19 games with the Boston Bruins, he would score 1 goal and record 21 penalty minutes. During the Olympic break, he was sent down to Providence in the AHL, but would end up missing time from a concussion he sustained while tripping over his own luggage in the middle of the night. His first NHL goal was a game-winner against Montreal on February 7th, 2010.

McQuaid became a regular for Boston in the 2010/2011 season, recording 15 points in 67 games, weighing in at +30 and having 96 PIM. That postseason, he won the Stanley Cup, playing in 23 games and getting 4 assists.

He has established himself as a very effective bottom-pairing defenseman with the Bruins, but has shown he can reasonably take the #4 spot when injuries take their toll on the Bruins. Adam's nickname in the locker room and otherwise as sported by Andrew Ference is "Darth Quaider." He is under contract with the Bruins until the 2018/2019 season.

Thoracic Outlet Syndrome

In 2012, McQuaid was diagnosed with Thoracic Outlet Syndrome, and required emergency surgeries to remove blood clots. One surgery involved removing a rib and fair amount of muscle from the right side of his neck, while another removed a clot from his arm. The surgeries were successful, but McQuaid was put on blood thinners, and was expected to miss the entire 2012/2013 season due to recovery. With hard work, however, McQuaid hit the ice in December, and started on opening night in the lockout-shortened season. Because of his fight against blood clots, he was nominated for the 2013 Bill Masterton Trophy.

Adam and Liam

The Hockey world was taken by aweh when little Liam Fitzgerald, AKA "The Fist-Bump Kid" had his video go viral. Here is the E:60 describing Liam and when he got to meet his favourite player ever, Adam McQuaid.
