My top 10 games of all time as a 35 year old gamer.

I have played some great video games in my time. I had a Sega Genesis and NES when I was little and eventually got a SNES. My first video game ever I could think of when holding a controller was either Sonic the Hedgehog 1 on Mario Bros 3. I can’t remember which one I played first. I must have been 4 or 5.

Anyway I’ve played a lot of great games in my time. I didn’t have a PlayStation growing up, as you will see from my list. I was able to play some games when my friend lent me his PS.

Here is my top 10 of all time:

1 Zelda Ocarina of Time

2 Super Metroid

3 Chrono Trigger

4 Super Smash Melee

5 Doom Eternal

6 Sekiro

7 Elden Ring (if there was no stuttering even on high end pcs I would put this maybe one spot higher)

8 Witcher 3

9 Final Fantasy VII

10 Hollow Knight

This was a hard list to make. I know I left out some great games that are also 10/10.

Honorable mentions:

Skyrim

Assassins Creed II

Crash Game from my childhood - need help identifying

Hey when I was a kid I had this Crash game I vaguely remember but I feel like it might not have been real I'm not sure?

I believe it was a 2005 kart racing game developed by Radical Entertainment and published by Vivendi Universal Games under the Sierra Entertainment label for the GameCube (GC), PlayStation 2 (PS2), Xbox, and the PlayStation Portable (PSP). The game was released in North America on October 21, 2005 and in Europe on November 4, 2005. The PlayStation 2 version was re-released in the three-disc "Crash Bandicoot Action Pack" compilation (alongside Crash Nitro Kart and Crash Twinsanity) in the United States on June 12, 2007 and in Europe on July 20, 2007.[5] I think it was the third racing game in the Crash Bandicoot video game series, following Crash Nitro Kart.

The game's story centers on the exploits of the protagonist, Crash Bandicoot, who must win the ownership of a dilapidated theme park by finding its missing Power Gems before his nemesis, Doctor Neo Cortex, can.

It might have received generally mixed reviews; while its visual style, humor and supplementary content were generally praised, the racing mechanics and track designs were criticized for being uninspired, and the game's graphical quality was deemed to be inconsistent. Content from the game was later remastered as part of Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled, released on June 21, 2019.

It's literally like a blur in the back of my mind what was this game & how can I find it? Is it real or did I just make it up?

Old gamer intro

Hey, all! Been playing games one way or anther since the late 60s. First game I can actually remember is watching my grandparents and their friends playing a card game called Pinochle. Very popular with the German-Americans around St Louis, Missouri, US back then. I personally haven't played it since the 90s.

First board game I remember playing was checkers. Graduated to Life, Monopoly, Yahtzee, Risk, etc.

First video game was pretty rare in the gamer universe. Mom worked for the University of Illinois back in the early 70s. For a few days scattered around my summer vacation I'd go with her and roam the campus. One day I found the CompSci department and saw profs and students playing a game on their bigass computer. The screen was maybe 4x6 inches, portrait, green screen. They were playing some version of Lunar Lander. I was so happy they let this 9 year old kid play. I was hooked. Then got Pong, the Magnavox Odyssey 300 and on.

First comp was a Tandy TRS-80, then an Apple IIe, then Army comps and comms. I remember a Star Trek game, then for an Apple or IBM was Lode Runner.

Late 70s/early 80s excellent conjunction of D&D, PC, Arcade, so much new and fun shit all at once. Never enough time on your hands.

During the early 80s played a few live-action games in the Army and university like the assassin game and Killer. We soldiers used these games for fun and skill practice. I remember getting killed once by a bomb placed in my locker. It turns out my roommate had betrayed me and had let in one of the players. Fucker hid a "bomb", a CO2 cartridge, in my rucksack.

Tons of quarters into arcades since Asteroids and Space Invaders. Favs back in those stand-up days were Tempest and Omega Race.

Played Gameboy, Nintendo 64, but main console became Playstation. Still running Fallout 76 to this day.

Love my PC games like Descent, Duke Nukem, Quake, Myst, Civ, ET:QW, Redneck Rampage, Deus Ex, CoD, Battlefield univers, and on and on.

Currently play poker with vet buddies every Tuesday, poker online, various social board games like Trivial Pursuit, Uno, Stupid, True Colors, etc. Have a few Io games for PC, solitaires, Mahjong, but mainly on PS4/5.

I could be completely off base for this but a Trails game being this high in best-sellers for Amazon is not normal right? Did Reverie, CS4, Crossbell games or even Ys get anywhere this high? If this is just a normal thing because it's close to release date that's happened before then I'd understand but I was under the impression Falcom titles never particularly charted well in terms of anticipation.

Dear Warriors of Light,

As we are currently going through a new expansion, it's pretty common at this point that there will be issues and Square Enix is very well aware of them going on right now.

With Hakul's thread covering only one example, this thread will be its replacement and please use this thread to report and discuss any and all issues plaguing the game right now. Please avoid making duplicate threads for ANY particular issue at this time. This thread will be updated with any new information as it becomes available.

Current ongoing issues

Do note that this thread will be updated from time to time to cover all ongoing issues that are plaguing players, so if you're having issues, chances are others will be having the same issue as well. So to repeat what has been said above, PLEASE use this thread to report the issue and avoid making duplicate threads.

Thank you and we appreciate your cooperation on the matter.

PSA: Xbox 360 Marketplace Closure in 1 Month
r/Rockband

A subreddit for all things Rock Band.

Members Online

We're in the endgame now, my fellow rockers. The Xbox 360 marketplace closes in one month exactly on July 29.

Here's what the closure of the Xbox 360 marketplace means. A lot of this is rehashed information.

  1. Once the store closes, you will not be able to buy any new songs for the Xbox 360 versions of Rock Band, Rock Band 2, Rock Band 3, LEGO Rock Band and Green Day: Rock Band.

  2. Any song you buy on your Xbox 360 or through the website, marketplace.xbox.com, will show up as bought, downloadable and playable in Rock Band 4 for the Xbox One/Series X|S.

  3. It is unclear whether U.S. Track Pack codes can be redeemed on just an Xbox 360 or an Xbox One/Series X|S. I have seen posts offering conflicting information about this. Some people say they've been able to redeem these codes through their Xbox One, others say they can't. I don't know why there is a discrepancy or how to explain. Just know that this could be an issue if all you have is an Xbox One and you want these track pack codes.

  4. There are exclusive and delisted songs on those track packs. AC/DC Live is the only way to get those 18 songs, all of which are from AC/DC's legendary Live at Donington album. Track Pack Vol. 2 has "Snow ((Hey Oh))," which was delisted, while Metal has 3 delisted songs -- "Hair of the Dog," "Levitate," and "Master of the Universe." If you redeem those track pack codes, you will get those delisted songs. I can personally confirm this.

  5. Rock Band songs and albums can still be bought through the One/Series X|S and through xbox.comBut that DLC will only work in Rock Band 4, even if they were originally released during the RB1-3 era. They will not show up on your Xbox 360 as being available to download.

  6. For example: If you buy "Constant Motion," a song that was released for Rock Band 1 in 2008, on your Xbox 360 or marketplace.xbox.com, you will be able to play that song in RB1-4. But if you buy "Constant Motion" on your Xbox One or from xbox.com, it will only work for Rock Band 4

  7. If you did accidentally buy older Rock Band songs on the Xbox One, you can buy it again on the 360 if you want to play it in the older games. Yes, you'd be paying for it twice, but the option is available.

  8. Certain DLC songs are needed for achievements in Rock Band 3, while other DLC songs can make it easier to unlock other achievements/trophies in Rock Band 1&2.

  9. Every song that's available for sale on the Xbox 360 can be bought on the Xbox One. There are no exclusive songs available for sale on the Xbox 360 that aren't on the Xbox One.

  10. Songs from the Rock Band Network (which was closed years ago) are not available in Rock Band 4 apart from songs that were re-released as DLC (and have to be re-bought).

  11. The store's closure will not affect the console's online functionality. That means you will still be able to play online multiplayer in several different Xbox 360 titles, including Rock Band, Call of Duty or Gears of War. You will also still be able to re-download games and DLC you previously bought.

  12. Most Xbox 360-backwards compatible games can be bought through the Xbox One. That content -- like Dragon Age: Origins or Gears of War 2 -- is not going away.

  13. The Xbox 360 marketplace is available through the console itself, or through marketplace.xbox.com.

  14. The closure of the store means more than 220 digital games will disappear forever. You can find more details about those games here.

  15. This closure does not affect our fellow PlayStation rockers.

  16. Microsoft has begun permanently discounting several Xbox 360 titles ahead of the store's closure. The company said it will be updating this list with more games on July 16, and these price reductions will remain in place until July 29. I don't know if this means we'll get a long-awaited discount on Rock Band DLC for the Xbox 360, but I just wanted to flag these dates everyone just in case there is something.

For those about to rock, I salute you.

Some general notes regarding core availability and management on iOS

TL;DR: You can't add cores on iOS after installation! The cores it comes with are all there is. Sideload the *.ipa version if you want more cores and JIT. If you want to emulate a sixth-generation console, use something else.

This topic has come up quite a bit since RetroArch was released on the App Store, so I figured a detailed post about it would be helpful. (DISCLAIMER: I'm not a libretro/RetroArch developer, just a common user.)

On most platforms, RetroArch does not come with any cores. You install them through the built-in Core Downloader (or Steam or your Linux distro's package manager, depending on how you installed RetroArch). Those cores can be deleted as you please. If your filesystem allows it, you can also modify your core list from outside of RetroArch just by adding/deleting cores from their folder.

This is NOT the case on iOS! Here, every core that can be used is included with RetroArch itself. The process of adding cores is done by the developers when creating a new version of the app. Once it is installed, there is no way for a user to modify the cores. The only way to update the cores or get new ones is to update RetroArch to a version that has them included. These differences exist due to the technical limitations of the platform.

In addition to the App Store version, there is also an *.ipa version of RetroArch available from its website, which can be installed using tools like AltStore, SideStore or Sideloadly. (This was the only way to use RetroArch on iOS before it was released on the App Store.) This sideloaded version can be used as an alternative to the App Store version, if you do not mind a more complicated installation process and the need to "refresh" the app every so often so it does not get disabled. You can also install it alongside the App Store version, as they are unique apps with separate files and configurations.

The main advantage the sideloaded version has is its core selection. It has several cores not currently available in the App Store, including MAME (for Arcade; supports more games than FinalBurn Neo, can also emulate non-arcade systems), Flycast (for Sega Dreamcast and NAOMI/Atomiswave arcade games), Play! (for PlayStation 2; note that this emulator is in an alpha state and many games do not work correctly) Virtual Jaguar (for Atari Jaguar), Opera (for 3DO), QUASI88 (for NEC PC-88), and X Millennium (for Sharp X1).

The other big advantage of the sideloaded version is its ability to use just-in-time (JIT) compilation, which allows several cores that emulate more demanding systems to have improved performance and battery life. The same aforementioned tools used to install RetroArch can also be used to enable JIT. Apple does not allow the feature to be used in the App Store.

However, even the sideloaded version is missing certain cores found on other platforms. Notably, there are no cores for GameCube, Wii, or 3DS available on iOS. You must use an emulator outside of RetroArch if you want to emulate these systems. Note that RetroArch does not have any cores that emulate PlayStation 3/4/5/Vita, Wii U, Nintendo Switch, or Xbox/360/One/Series on any platform at all.

It is possible to find references to unsupported cores and systems in the Online Updater and in Import Content, as these features work the same on every platform. However, a downloaded system file only works with the core it is made for, and a game added to a playlist can only be played if you have a core that can run it (even if RetroArch’s scanner detects it).

Hopefully this post is useful to someone. I wrote it because there did not seem to be much info available about the differences between iOS and other platforms, or about the *.ipa version (which I use myself).

EDIT: Added the Play! core to the list of sideload-exclusive cores. Mentioned the ability to have the Play Store and sideloaded versions installed together. Noted that unsupported cores and systems are still referenced in the app. Oh, and thanks for the award!

Platinumed all 3 versions of Medievil 1 and I'm so upset with myself for not getting into these games sooner!

Absolutely wonderful experiences. I played a tiny bit of 1 back in high school when PlayStation All-Stars came out and Sir Dan was a character I played a decent amount but I never really gave the series a real go until recently.

Medievil 1998 is an instant classic and will now absolutely rank high within my list of favorite games from that generation, I can only hope that 2 gets added to PS5 soon! Aside from like 2 puzzles, ranged feeling way too cumbersome to use and boss fights being mostly mediocre imo it was a lovely experience. Would probably give it an 8.5/10 or so.

Ressurection is such a mixed bag. The art style change has a few changes I enjoyed but for the most part it felt like it lost the gothic edge in favor of going for pure Saturday Morning Cartoon vibes. Same goes for the writing too where it loses a lot of the dryness that made the humor of the original great and adds even more dialogue and constant gags that range from ok to pretty funny. The combat changes were also really rough as while I appreciated fleshing out movesets the moves are super finnicky due to enemies constantly getting knocked out of combos and enemies still attacking just as rabidly as they did on PS1 despite you attacking slower. In fact the much slower movement, acceleration and attacking is really what hurts this game the most. Game also has the horrible habit of giving bosses tons of non-telegraphed invulnerable states or bizarre mechanics (lookin at you final 2 bosses). Level design was pretty solid tho even if the genie in your head ruined most of the puzzles by outright telling you the solution. Some things like the Scurvy Docks and the Asylum boss were excellent though and the core of the adventure is still great fun. Still, I will probably never play it again when I prefer the original. A solid 7 from me, maybe a 6.5 at worst.

The PS4 remake on the other hand was almost entirely a step up from the OG. Weapon swapping was great, the art style is /mostly/ a huge and faithful upgrade and things like ranged combat and movement seeing meaningful improvements make it the best feeling of the 3. Loved the retooled boss fights for the Ghost Ship, King Pumpkin and Zarok fights too! Only real issue are that some areas feel way too colorful and well lit (lookin at you ant colony) but for the most part it really is the definitive way to play the game. The Lost Souls were also great fun as it encouraged replays of levels with your maxed out Sir Dan while solving fun riddles and doing some silly minigames. 9/10 easily!!!

Now please Sony, give me Medievil 2!!! Probably gonna load up an iso to my Vita and try it out before then cause I'm impatient haha.

Best games to play with young kids

There are 2 main sections :

  • A) Games I've tried (with my kids)

  • B) Games I've not tried yet

These 2 sections are divided into 3 main sub sections :

  • i) 2 players max

  • ii) up to 4 players and more

  • iii) online multiplayer

I've started to add the minimal age I recommend. If no age is speciied, then the minimal age is 6-7yo. All games are available on Nintendo Switch unless specified. I try to focus on games that gets above average reviews. I'm probably going to put this in an Excel spreadsheet at some point to make it easier to filter. Games with less than 300 reviews on Steam and less than 20 reviews on Metacritic gets the "LK" tag which stands for lesser-known.

A) Games I've tried

2 players max

Great :

  • It Takes Two (8yo)

  • Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker : action-puzzle

  • Luigi's Mansion 3 : action adventure

  • Snipperclips Plus : puzzle

  • BOXBOY! + BOXGIRL! : puzzle

  • Portal 2 (8yo) : puzzle

  • Yoshi's Crafted World (5yo) : similar to Kirby Star Allies

  • Puyo Puyo Tetris

  • Guacamelee 1,2 : action-platformer

  • Kirby and the Forgotten Land : platformer, a bit too easy and linear

  • Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze (8yo) : platformer, a bit too hard before that age

  • Door Kickers: Action Squad (8yo) : side scroller, similar to Broforce, a bit violent for 8yo

  • Paw Patrol on a Roll (5yo) : action platformer, great for young kids

  • Unravel Two : puzzle platformer

  • Racing games : Forza, Gran Turismo, F1, NFS Hot Pursuit, Dirt, etc. Rarely on Switch.

Not bad :

  • A Hat in Time : 3d platformer, cute for kids but the second player is limited a bit

  • Portal Knights (8yo) : mix of Minecraft and RPG

  • Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1+2 : graphics are meh in split screen on Switch so go PS5/etc

  • Kinect Disneyland Adventures (5yo) : action adventure (PC+XBOX only)

  • Stick Fight The Game : fighting, repetitive but funny! similar to Duck Game

Not a fan :

  • Chicory A Colorful Tale (PS5)

  • Cat Quest 2 : action RPG similar to Minecraft Dungeons

  • Monaco (8yo) : top down stealth
