Niantic just pulled a serious big brain move, maybe the slickest one to date

The news post was just released for the next event. At the first glance, there seems to be nothing too special about that event. Until you read the event bonuses:

  • Increased chance of encountering event Pokemon from Incense

That's a BRILLIANT move by them.

Allow me to recap, so you get what I mean:

  • Niantic releases the Biome update, along with new and nice catch screens

  • Pretty much everyone is hyped

  • Turns out that the introduction of Biomes meant that we get an insane amount of a few Kanto spawns that take up a LOT of space from other spawns, even during events

  • Niantic does not fix the balance issue between event spawns and the handful of Kanto Pokemon that are absolutely everywhere

  • Instead, they now introduce more event spawns if you use an Incense, or in other words, pay for them

For years, event spawns were a free feature, and sure, they still are. There's just 50% less of them. One might think that this is not intentional, but let's think about it for a second: what happened if you used an Incense during an event before the biomes? That's right, you got event spawns from it. It was not a bonus, it was simply a normal feature. Yet, they call it a "bonus" now.

In the span of 3 months, Niantic managed to semi-monetize every single spawn that doesn't belong to the very small pool of Kanto Pokemon that are in the Biomes. And to top it off, they have the guts to call this a "bonus".

Absolute brilliance by them. Get everyone hyped, and silently cause an issue at the same time. Then fix the issue by monetizing it.
