The Aussies are watching from their St Lucia hotel

Tanzim Hasan Sakib has the new ball for Bangladesh as Afghanistan openers Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran make their way out to the middle.

Let’s have a bit of fun with this.

The Aussies are watching this match from their St Lucia hotel. It’s just after 8:30pm where they are. Something tells me there might be a few nervous beers being consumed. Google reckons the beverage of choice on that Caribbean island is Piton Beer. We’ll have a look on social media over the next few hours to see what the Aussies are up to.

Three runs off the first over. To repeat, Australia need Bangladesh to win (with a few other things to go their way) if they’re to make the last four of the World Cup.

Brettig: The irony of Australia needing Bangladesh’s help

How Australia can make a semi-final

This is where it gets a bit confusing.

Australia need Bangladesh to beat Afghanistan today, but not by a massive margin.

Now that Bangladesh know they are batting second, these are the potential scenarios at hand, according to this piece from cricket.com.au.

If Bangladesh need 160 to win:

If Bangladesh chase Afghanistan’s total with 41 balls remaining or more, they will jump Australia into second spot in the group. That’s 13.1 overs completed.

Any slimmer margin, or any point after 13.2 overs, will see Australia go through.

If Bangladesh need 140 to win:

If Bangladesh chase Afghanistan’s total with 12.4 overs completed or less (44 balls remaining), they will jump Australia in second spot in the group.

Any later in the innings will see Australia remain in second place.

If Bangladesh need 100 to win:

If the Tigers roll Afghanistan for 100, they’d need to chase the target with 49 balls remaining or more to jump Australia into second spot.

Afghanistan win the toss and elect to bat

Afghanistan, fresh off their victory over Australia on Sunday, have won the toss in Kingstown and will have a bat to start this crunch Super Eight match.

“It’s a proud moment for us being here,” said Afghanistan skipper Rashid Khan. “It’s an opportunity to be in a semi-final. Just making sure we do basics rights and enjoy.”

Bangladesh would have bowled first.

Recap: Australia lose to India but can still make T20 World Cup semi-finals

By Malcolm Conn

Australia’s Twenty20 World Cup hopes hang by the finest of threads after losing to India in their last Super Eight’s match in St Lucia early on Tuesday morning (AEST).

Australia needs Bangladesh, winless in the tournament’s second round, to beat Afghanistan by less than 62 runs in the last Super Eights match later on Tuesday to reach the semi-finals with a superior run rate.

“Come on Bangladesh,” Australian captain Mitch Marsh joked during the after-match presentation.

Unbeaten in the tournament, India scored an imposing 5-205 to win by 24 runs, an innings built around a blazing 92 from captain Rohit Sharma in just 41 balls with seven fours and eight sixes.

The victory confirmed India’s place in the semi-finals with England and South Africa.

If Afghanistan wins, they will advance to the semi-finals with a second victory in the Super Eights. If Bangladesh wins, they will be equal on one victory from three Super Eight matches with Australia and Afghanistan. The semi-finalist will then be decided on run rate, with Australia ahead at the moment.
