The Blackcoat's Daughter...wow.
false

A bit picky about my slow burns but damn did I dig this one. Has me hopeful for Longlegs.

I was a bit concerned about this movie's mixed audience ratings and seeing equal numbers of rave reviews and negative reviews (this happened with In a Violent Nature, which I wanted to like but couldn't). Good thing I decided to give this one a watch.

The pacing was slow, but not a crawl. The cinematographic touches (shadows, long zooms, etc.) allowed for some really tense moments. The score and sound design were gorgeous and skin-crawling. Cast performances were excellent and helped add to the overall vibe of something being 'off.' Gore was disturbing and not overly gratuitous. Some great jumpscares...some reviews were wrong. I really do not understand the reviews calling this movie 'confusing' and 'boring.'

Stand out moments:

  • The camera pans from behind Katherine's head, revealing a tall Baphomet-like demonic figure standing in the corner above Rose (reminiscent of Insidious). Terrifying.

  • The furnace scene...yep.

  • The jumpscare in which Kat kills Rose. Haven't jumped like that in a while.

  • Honorable mention: The reference to The Exorcist in which Kat asks the older women not to touch her.

Overall rating: 4.5/5. What was in the holy water?

Louis’ manipulation with turning Claudia
false

Jfc, Louis. Dragging Claudia’s poor little dying body across the floor like she’s an object, and using Lestat’s fear of being abandoned against him by promising he’ll never leave him if he just does this one thing. That level of emotional blackmail was shocking and makes me question so much of Louis’ account of their relationship. And I’m not saying this to say that Lestat isn’t culpable, he is the one that turns her, but I don’t think he would have without that degree of coercion from Louis. It’s interesting to see this side of Louis, a glimpse of him from someone else’s perspective than his or Armand’s or Claudia’s. And poor Claudia, being used as a bargaining chip and weapon in their toxic ass marriage from day one. Very disturbing scene brought to life perfectly by these actors.

I'd really love a season where Jamie Brewer has one of the leading roles. Everyone always states how Jessica, Evan, Kathy or Sarah are the icons of AHS. But for me, Jamie is one of the icons.

The original was great and it has not been long, why not come up with a new title? The premise can be applied in so many ways, just feels lazy at this point
