Cressida’s big mistake with Debling

Many people in this sub (me included) believe that Cressida and Debling would’ve made a good match.

However, upon rewatch of the first half of the show, I realized where Cressida went wrong in her pursuit of Debling. At the balloon event, when Debling reveals he doesn’t like his family, Cressida extends some sympathy and basically admits she doesn’t like hers either. This is the moment Debling looks most intrigued by Cressida, when she’s actually being honest and not pandering to him by reading books about endangered birds.

The reason why Debling picks Penelope is that she is honest with him about not liking grass, and how her favorite novels are romance books. Debling appreciates that Penelope has a sense of self and that she would have things to do while he is away traveling. Cressida did not show him any part of who she really was, she showed him only who she thought he wanted her to be.

It strikes me as ironic that if Cressida just said she hates her family, wants to be married to have the freedom away from them, and that she currently doesn’t have any hobbies/passions but will find one when Debling is away traveling, then he probably would’ve married her. Cressida also has the fact that she wants and expects a practical marriage without love and that she doesn’t have romantic feelings for anyone else which puts her a step above Penelope in that regard.

The big theme for this season is honesty. Cressida’s biggest mistake with Debling was that she was never honest with him. If she had just been herself, instead of what everyone else thinks she should be, she could’ve had a happier ending than what she got.

My hope for Nicola and Luke…

I do hope they are both able to rest and recuperate. The 6-month PR campaign must have been relentless and gruelling- and they both did a great job. Smiling joking happily answering probably the same questions over and over.

Nicola and Luke gave incredible beautiful performances as P & C. So if either are glancing through Reddit, thank you for sharing your talent, your sweetness and your light. Whilst I am eagerly awaiting your next projects(!) , please rest and recharge, and give yourselves time and space to process this intense experience. Big hugs to you 🤗

And FINNALLY, my thanks and love to this group. It’s been so much fun 🥰

false

Her whole thing has always been the invisible wallflower thing, she was able to be present at every ball without being noticed and thus able to stand close to people to listen to them gossiping.

But now with everyone knowing who she is, how will she be able to gather all that gossip? I imagine people will now be a lot more careful what they are saying around her, because they can be sure that she will write about it.

Potentially divisive take on Pen’s “because you’re not a woman” speech to Colin

Potentially divisive take on Pen’s “because you’re not a woman” speech to Colin

While I appreciate the writers taking the opportunity to bring up the unfair position of women in that era, and being a feminist myself, I wish that moment was written in a more nuanced, sophisticated or complex manner. Or just handled with more care and love. I cannot help but feel like all of their emotions and the core of why they were upset at each other were watered down to a simplistic “girl boss” moment.

I wish she had drawn parallels to how she wished Colin would have seen things from her perspective, especially in the carriage scene when he gave that heartfelt speech about how he had to disguise himself as a man that society expected him to be. If he as a man felt that pressure despite being one of the most eligible men around, imagine how alienating a time it was for her as a young woman no one would pay attention to. It would have been such a great full circle moment for him. We see it a little in his plea to Cressida but I would have loved to see that conversation between Pen and Colin.

Intimacy in S3

Anyone feel like the most intimate moments in season 3 were the kisses in the epilogue and not the actual love scenes? I felt like the casual intimacy as a couple was just so beautiful. Colin has always pushed the bounds of propriety with Pen when it comes to casual touches. We see Colin sitting sooooo close to Pen when he calls to give her the engagement ring and he kisses her hand at balls and sits close at their engagement party and I just love how he can't help but want to be close to her.

It's one thing to have sexy scenes in their own home (or in the middle of a deserted street 😅). It's another though to be casually affectionate in front of family. I love that he can kiss her whenever he wants as her husband and he doesn't care that his inlaws and siblings are there to witness it.

Anyone else feel the same?

People need to be prepared for a huge change in cast.

I do not believe the Featheringtons will return - their story is done. I do not believe the Queen will be back - the Lady Whistledown arc is over with her and historically, she is set to die around now.

They need to make room in the budget for new characters.

I know we all wanted flashbacks of Polin and I had a thought about when they could have done it that. I HATE that they ruined Polin's wedding night (I'll forever grieve it) but that would have been a good spot for flashbacks.

Imagine if we saw Colin lying on the couch, tossing and turning, sleeping fitfully. Then we see flashes of his dreams. Like whimsical, hazy, moments from his perspective. Seeing Pen for the first time. Her laughter when he fell off the horse. Watching Pen play with El. They could have progressed the flashbacks through seasons 1 and 2. Showing real scenes of them dancing, him grabbing her hand, and their looks throughout the years. Then through season 3 with flashes of her talking to other men, dancing with Debbling and smiling, seeing the carriage leave, and her face in the carriage scene. Then he wakes up with a start, sweating, and breathing heavily.

It would have been a great way to give us flashbacks, help us feel the torment Colin was going through, and capture their love story throughout the seasons to give us that emotional pining.

The Modrich plot

Im so confused as to why this is even a thing. Is there some payoff we will get out of watching the objectively most boring subplot of season 3, will they be important in later seasons, what is going on? I don’t understand the decision to spend so much time on an already packed season on this couple. Who asked for this?
