The Berzatto kids' birth stories The Berzatto kids' birth stories
Discussion

One of my favorite parts of "Ice Chips" was hearing Donna talk about the births of Michael, Natalie, and Carmen. But upon further thought it makes me sad too, because (and I'm sure some of you have caught on to this already), their births ended up foreshadowing their lives.

"Michael didn't want to come out." In "Napkins" when he and Tina are talking, Mikey says something along the lines of how the whole having a dream and getting to live it out thing was never going to happen for him 😔 Some people get to realize their dreams, and some people don't. Mikey wound up saddled with The Beef after Papa Berzatto up and left, and just ended up working his life away in that place until his suicide. So Mikey not wanting to come out when he was born was like, he already knew he wasn't entering anything good 😔

"Natalie was peaceful." No one's life is perfect. But in comparison to her brothers, Natalie is doing pretty well. Loving, successful husband, just became a mother, and is actually doing the work to overcome the family trauma. Now she wants to work to make sure she doesn't pass on said trauma to her own daughter.

"Carmen kept getting stuck." For 3 seasons now we've watched Carmy progress, then regress, progress, then regress again. He's perpetually stuck in that cycle. Stuck on Fields' abuse, stuck on his family's dysfunction, stuck on the idea that fixing the restaurant will fix his family, literally got stuck in the walk-in (aka his dark mental state). It's been a frustrating journey to watch as it affects everyone around him, and threatens to alienate him from those he loves, and those who love him.

But I guess the glimmer of hope is, Carmy obviously got free eventually...or he wouldn't have been born 😂 So I'm going to remain optimistic that there's hope for him yet. Hopefully Season 4 will see Carmy at least start to face and heal from his trauma, get unstuck, and finally start living his authentic life.

Thanks for coming to my TED Talk lol
