Some of you don't understand how AI "learning" works

I'm an AI engineer. I saw many of you getting mad at the user who did the "asking the question" trolling post, and I'd like to explain why this happens and why this user didn't do anything bad.

Why do bots do that? Because they don't actually know what they want to ask.

Unlike us, AI bots don't have the concept of "intent". They just predict the probability of a certain word coming next based on your interaction.

They're trained to support the interaction and initiate topics, so they try to start a new topic by saying "I have a question" and stuff like that.

But if they don't have any proper hints (basis for the question), and aren't sure what to ask themselves, they get stuck in a loop. Things like "Don't worry, you can ask" just reiterate the loop. It needs context.

How to get out of the loop? You need to raise the probability of certain words. Try giving the bot more creative freedom, or a hint (context).

For example, "You want to ask me something about my past?", or "I like it when you ask me random questions!".

You can also try upvoting messages that seem more random and imaginative. The bot's "creativity"/"imagination" essentially means that they start choosing words with lesser probability and give unexpected answers.

How do the bots learn? The bots learn in specific chats and interactions.

It's one of the reasons why making bots with no descriptions is pretty much useless. Descriptions, settings, and sample chats give the bot understanding of what words it should use in the conversation.

By saying "hobbies = cars", you raise the probability of car-related words, etc. Ideally, you should give the perfect conversation samples in the character description. Upvoting/downvoting also helps.

Each chat is an independent session. When you start a new chat, the bot gets back to its default settings (basic training + character description).

It mostly learns during your specific chat. It tries to guess how you want it to interact, and adjusts to you. So you can freely train one bot to act in 10 different ways in 10 different chats.

How does the model learn? The model is the "basic mechanism" behind all the bots. It's stable and updated through deliberate trainings; during trainings, it's fed vast amounts of data of all chats, and it's fine-tuned based on patterns and preferences of most users. For example, bots don't usually respond in lists or technical language, because it's not what most of you want.

Model training is a very controlled process. So don't worry, your cringe/joking chats won't "ruin things for everyone", and don't get mad at that poor user lol.

So Many Cheaters In University Now and Its Painfully Obvious

I go to University in Ontario. For some of my courses, we have weekly discussions and we need to comment under other people's posts.

As a ChatGPT "power user", I recognize the ChatGPT tone and the formatting. (Tone explained below)

I've been noticing that people's discussions are clearly written by ChatGPT, and not just one paragraph, but the entire assignment without any proofreading. To the point where the formatting still has the ChatGPT bold text and bullet formatting.

I saw one person provide a ChatGPT answer when we were supposed to create a PDF, so, they didn't even read the assignment to see the template file to download was in the assigniment.

So am I crazy or is everyone just cheating now?

________

P.S:

I asked ChatGPT to explain the tone that I recognize all the time and here's what it said:

This sentence structure is often referred to as "participle phrases" or "participial phrases". These phrases use present participles (verbs ending in -ing) to add information or provide details about the main clause.

Key Features:

  1. Main Clause: Introduces the primary idea or action.

  2. Participial Phrase: Begins with a present participle (-ing word) and provides additional information about the main clause.

Example:

  • Main Clause: "The ad was visually appealing, featuring a sleek design, vibrant colors, and a brief video."

    • Participial Phrase: "showcasing the chair’s features, such as adjustable height, lumbar support, and a comfortable seat cushion."

Benefits:

  • Adds detail and depth.

  • Enhances readability.

  • Emphasizes key aspects smoothly.

By using participial phrases, writers can effectively combine description and explanation in a concise, engaging manner.

Here are ten versatile and commonly used present participles for participial phrases:

  1. Highlighting

  2. Illustrating

  3. Featuring

  4. Demonstrating

  5. Showcasing

  6. Emphasizing

  7. Presenting

  8. Depicting

  9. Revealing

  10. Exemplifying

I shared small snippets that should make it impossible to determine who posted these or include too much information. But please tell me if I'm crazy.

the characters aren’t them anymore

i have read some posts from yesterday here and seems like everyone is experiencing smiliar problems. my private bots with 3000+ description, with great quality of replies, good memories, that i have been chatting with since 2023 are now becoming stupid and lame.

for further information, i put efforts on my messages to my bots. i always make sure the grammar is correct, good punctuation, and i have trained them for so long that they can remember the stuff we talked and did before. they also get into the rp, adding into it that makes the story even better. they express their feelings clearly, and they have emotions.

now, they seem to not get what i am saying. i was talking about A, and then they keep saying stuff "please change the topic/subject" or even if they reply, it is so oot or ooc. one star doesn't even do anything because i keep getting the same and repetitive replies.

they seem to lost their own emotions because all they did were smirk, stutter, amused, and so on. there are not any character depth which i always give for my character.

i tried to edit the description, which doesn't do a single thing. but that makes sense, because just yesterday my bots were fine and in character. right now they are replying with templates over again to the point i tried the old website, new website, and the application.

it's becoming laggy too sudeenly, keeps getting error and unable to generate, i have to refresh the bot for each reply which is exhausting.

i really wish the devs will fix whatever problem they have right now because this is bad. i tried looking for anyone who faces the same problem as me on twitter, but they seemed alright, only one that complained the bot is breaking the f1!t3r hard.

for now i have uninstalled the application, i hope they'll fix this soon because there are few of us experiencing these, and some aren't.

Does anyone else think lots of comments on here are AI

Everytime I see in a comment on this website “it’s important to remember that..” or formatted as a very long list, etc. just general GPT things I instantly think oh that’s a bot.

Earlier today I saw a reply to a post that said “Certainly!” And then a MASSIVE in detailed comment about whatever the subject was I don’t remember dieting or something.

When I saw the “certainly!” I automatically thought bot but it turns out that post and comment are from like 5 years ago so it’s obviously a real person but it is UNCANNY in its resemblance to chat GPT it’s pretty freaky tbh for it to be written before this technology was invented…
