"Food Network Alternatives" Megathread / Sticky

Here it comes.... this is the pinned post for your hate

Alex v. America - Iron Chefs Alex v. America - Iron Chefs

Just wanted to start a thread for people who watched Alex v. America Iron Chefs. Stephanie, Michael and Jose were her competition. They also had a nice pair of judges for this competition. I won't say who won, but Michael Symon is always my favorite. I love to watch him cook. Also, would just like to say it again, I love Eric as a host on this show. He's so calm, yet knowledgeable about what is going on. Spoilers in the comments, so read no further.

Halloween Wars 2024, return to original format possibly? Halloween Wars 2024, return to original format possibly?

Just curious if anyone heard any rumors yet that might signal a full return to the original format? Easily one of our favorite shows and Jonathon returning was a great step but man the format is abysmal, the stage is abysmal and depressing... The cheerful fall setting and campy halloween format was so much fun, my wife and I looked forward to it every fall.

And Jonathan seemed totally held back last year, barely did anything funny or silly, he was just fun and no guest judges sucks.

Anyways it's never to early to see what's happening for Halloween wars

POLL

Am I the only one that thinks that this is one of the most unethical shows on TV? I mean it's not even a prank. People sign up thinking that they are going to be auditioning for their own show. And it ends up being something completely different. I wonder how many potential contestants just walk out? I've never seen a show where the expectations for an audition are so high and then they just cut you right to your knees. And the show last week was absolutely cringe-worthy where the woman contestant "over acted" in such desperation, to just try to catch "somebody's attention" because she knew it was going to be on television anyways. It was gross & embarrassing. I hope this show does not renew for another season. Super glad tonight an "auditioning" chef WON, but ...she doesn't get her own show ..she won 8K. That's all.

Can't get into BBQ Brawl Can't get into BBQ Brawl

In oast seasons, I've considered it just ok but this season seems unwatchable to me. I think it's the fake over the top "shenanigans" that they do. From the opening of the show it's just so cheesy (to me). Maybe it's because I just finished up the 3rd season of BBQ Showdown on Netflix (all 3 seasons are great btw-I HIGHLY recommend) and it's nothing like BB. Anyone else kind of tired of the cheesiness? Again this is just MY opinion, I'm just wondering if others feel the same.

Why does everyone think ToC is the height of cooking shows and a real test of a chef? Why does everyone think ToC is the height of cooking shows and a real test of a chef?

I appreciate the fact that the format of the show and judging means its probably one of the only shows without any bias, and thats a very good thing.

But at the end of the day, its still a gimmicky reality show. The simple fact is if you change any of the input parameters - the draw, the ingredients, the judges - the results of every round and every season will be completely different.

Its basically a random choice and there are a few people who are really good at this sort of sudden pressure and format who have a slightly higher chance - its like house odds in a casino. Which is why they are more likely to go far.

A common question is why people like Bobby Flay or Gordon Ramsay (I'm not trying to imply here they are equal - its just a common example)) or any of the other big names don't compete, and the assumption always is they are 'afraid' because they won't win, and this means they aren't 'good enough'.

This is utter nonsense - ToC has zero relevance to real world cooking ability and success.

It has nothing to do with planning a menu, creating a dish, consistency etc, all the things that are needed for real world success. Making a new dish from weird crap from the bloody randomizer is one kind of creativity, but its very narrow definition and means nothing. In a real kitchen dishes are developed over weeks/months, and someone who can do that doesn't need to have anything in common with being good on ToC.

Its great entertainment, and its far far better than most other shows with their bias. Even shows with supposedly 'blind' judging like Throwdown aren't, because as any scientist will tell you, double blind is the only significant way.

In fact the reverse is true - the big names will not come on this show because they know its random luck, and it will cause a lot of damage to their image.

Food is very very subjective and thats the way it should be.
