R/Fancast: An Announcement, Things To Come, And The Discord Server!

Hey everyone!

I’m CBF20, and many of you might’ve noticed that there has been a surge of activity and impressions over the last couple of months here at r/fancast.

Over the last week, I have been talking to u/Nerdy_Xbox_Gamer, about ways to accommodate the subreddit’s growth and making it the best it can be.

New Mods

We began with adding to the mod team roster, as in addition to myself, u/Nerdy_Xbox_Gamer, and u/TheJokerArkhamKing; u/deppstepp, and u/dstonemeier, have joined the page as moderations, so please give a warm welcome!

Updates, Improvement, and Feedback

Together, we're planning a ton of new ideas to make the sub an even better environment, with a small overview of planned subreddit additions including updated rules, new post flairs, and organized discussion threads, as well as a crackdown back on posts that are spam, repetitive, and needlessly NSFW.

We will also be taking all feedback, suggestions, and criticisms from the community into account for future plans, and if you have any further feedback you would like us to consider, please comment by all means!

MyCast

Finally, we'd like to introduce a new partnership with the MyCast Discord Server!

MyCast is the discord hub for live, real-time chat on all things fancasts, created nearly three years ago by u/jameshoward_official. It’s a very welcoming and solid community, where in addition to casting, you can talk DC, Marvel, and any IP in between.

Feel free to join right now through the link below, and I’ll be making a more formal invite on a separate post as well.

https://discord.gg/CYnPhgJRz7

You might also notice that MyCast shares a name with a fancasting website that I’m sure many of you might frequent, though as of right now, we are not officially affiliated with MyCast.io (though it was founded with the intent of site users building a stronger connection). However, we *have* been talking to site admins throughout the year about some form of collaboration, which could make for an exciting new partnership down the line

Once again, if you have any questions or suggestions then feel free to post them here and they will all be read. For any other moderation-related matters, please use the modmail, or direct messages.

Big days are ahead for r/fancast, as our main goal will continue to be expanding interest and impact in fancasting, and making it a fun pastime for all involved!

So thank you fellow fancasters and best wishes - here's to the future of r/fancast and all fancasting!

— CBF20 and the r/fancast Mod Team

SEVEN DAY SUB TRIAL ANNOUNCEMENT
MOD

Hello, as of late, the r/fancast mods have noticed a huge increase in engagement and activity on the sub, and about two weeks ago we hit 20k members, which we’re very happy about, and would love to thank all those who contributed to that in a positive manner. This increase in sub engagement and membership however, also came with a huge influx of posts to keep track of, and over the last half year we’ve received a significant amount of messages about the state of the sub being somewhat less than ideal, which our reputation among adjacent subreddit communities seems to enforce unfortunately.

Several different members over different time frames have attested to an overabundance in “who would you cast” posts, shitposts, and posts that are downright unoriginal being the the sub standard. As a result of all these changes, the mods have decided to to run a one-week trial period on sub posting to test the waters on how changes can work, how the changes are revived by those made in the community, and the potential to keep this changes in the long run.

Starting the time of this post, July 2, PST, instant-approval posting will be turned off until July 9, PST, and posts will be kept in the mod queue to be manually approved, but only if they fit the new posting criteria:

  1. This criteria really only applies to the two main types of posts one would see when browsing the sub (exceptions will be made for others) with them being general “actor as character” posts and “who would/could/ should actor play in thing” or “who would you cast as character” posts. For the “actor as character” posts all posters must write two sentences MINIMUM about why they think their preferred actor would work as the preferred character, but if the OP decides to include a video or clip showcasing the actor instead of writing sentences, however, this will be approved. If there have been at least 10 posts about “x actor as x character” predating the new post, it will be discarded, simply comment on the oldest/most popular version of that post if there is a new perspective to share.

  2. All compilation posts involving multiple actors as multiple characters will be approved as to not make the already tedious process of image formatting and posting more tedious than it should be, unless by some miracle it matches a previous composition post prompt for prompt, in which case it will not be approved.

  3. For the “who would/could/should actor play in project” or “who would you cast as character” posts, any posters must include at least TWO suggestions for who the actor would/could/should play in said project, and/or at least TWO actor suggestions from the OP in the “who would you cast” posts.

These steps are being taken to see how creativity and thought process is applied in fancasts in its fullest potential, as opposed to constant repetition and unoriginality that seems to run rampant as of lately. All questions from this post will be answered in the comments. Throughout this entire trial we will be keeping tabs on sub engagement and user feedback/application until the very end, in which the sub will be reverted to as it was and the mods will discuss the execution and overall progress of the experiment to see if it’s worth moving forward with. We’d like to thank you guys for your understanding, and here’s to future of r/fancast 🙏

If they're going to cast a Teenage Ellie from TLOU2, I have one in mind, someone new: Sarah Pidgeon as Ellie Williams. She maybe older, but at least she looks the part and could bring that humor as well as the attitude. Thoughts?
