Ambient Sunday does not enjoy the football with: Benjamin Mauch x Micah Pick, and Philippe Deschamps x A.e.r.o

•June 30, 2024 • Leave a Comment

I really hate watching England play. My footballing memories stretch back to 1970 and it’s nothing since then but disappointment scattered with the occasional good result to allow hope to return. Only to be dashed later. England are playing as I write and I can’t bear to watch, so something soothing from Benjamin Mauch x Micah Pick, and Philippe Deschamps x A.e.r.o.

Benjamin Mauch x Micah Pick are first up. Benjamin is a musician and teacher from Richmond, VA. He first appeared here just over a year ago. Micah is also a musician and teacher, so I’m going to mind my Ps and Qs.

Their track is Blueberry Jam from their forthcoming album Gloaming Gathering. I’m rather fond of blueberry jam, so it’s handy it’s easy to make. As for the track, it’s a light ambient house track.

There’s a spritely sense of deep house fluffiness and a bit of bubbling synth work. This manages to be uplifting and dreamy all at the same time. A little surface noise and light clatter gives the track a welcome texture.

Melodies are seemingly plucked from the ether. They glitter and jitter like butterflies. Captivating and then. Gone. They arrive in welcome waves. Hard to be sad when this is on.

The track gives you that lifted sense that everything will be alright. But every England football fan knows that’s not the case, so I’ll stick to the music instead.

Ok, so England have scored to level the match. To keep my blood pressure manageable here’s something positively horizontal and drone filled from Philippe Deschamps x A.e.r.o.

Philippe has appeared here a couple of times before. As a reminder Philippe Deschamps is a Paris based film music composer, electronic producer and multi-instrumentalist. He’s got a classical background and has written film scores. A.e.ro is Albert Sipov – chillout, ambient, downtempo, midtempo, synthwave and trance music producer from Belarus.

They’ve collaborated on Into the Blue Sleep. This is every bit as soporific as the title implies. And it’s beautifully executed.

There’s not a beat to be had. This is that smooth liquid ambient that reeks of space, the deep ocean and your dreams. And if you’re waiting for the obligatory Eno reference, insert your own here.

It opens gently and quietly. Things build up slowly until it moves from coma to gentle reverie. A slowly swirling set of sounds. Tones are held but always cut off before it descends into drone. This is quite a lovely dreamy piece.

There comes a point in the track when it becomes really hard to write about it. Everything is so relaxing that typing becomes too much of an effort. This is that good.

And England somehow have won. And I get to do this stress all over again. Gulp.

Introspective techno with: Inwards – Moonscape

the moon

Late night introspective techno from Worcester-based Inwards.

Inwards is Kristian Shelley a lecturer at Kidderminster College in Music Production (and builder?) from Worcester, UK. He produces strange and beautiful techno. There’s more than a little psychedelia going on here. Less of the tie-dye sort and more of the old magik.

Here’s Moonscape from his new When It Rains It Pours twin track release. It’s techno with tubular bells. He says the EP is about luck and misfortune. As for Moonscape he says, “It is lucky to expose your new-born to the waxing Moon. It will give the baby strength. It’s lucky to move into a new house during the new Moon; prosperity will increase as the Moon waxes. It makes sense to try to maximise your luck during this time. To have the best luck during the full moon, make sure to set the right intentions, find the best mindset and focus. However, sleeping in the light of the full moon will destroy your face. It is lucky to hold a moonscape in your mouth at the full Moon; it will reveal the future. Beware though, the moon can bring bad luck too. DO NOT under any circumstances point at the new Moon or view any Moon over your shoulder.”

Opening with some lovely gentle Modular synths and a pitter patter background Moonscape develops into burbling techno. This is in the line of pastoral techno pioneers Ultramarine and Aphex Twin’s more gentle early moments.

The production is clean and clear. As it has to be given the number of layers and sounds in play. It never sounds cluttered. The sound is rich and full and always interesting. The bells chime away giving it ethereal moments.

And yet, once they are gone what is left is totally danceable. The beats are never forgotten and give the track a dervish energy for a waxing moon.

A perfect piece for late night listening. But beware of the full moon.

Drum and bass with: Silent Local – We Could

•June 28, 2024 • Leave a Comment

For those of us not at Glasto and tired of the wall to wall BBC coverage here’s a rather fine drum and bass track from Silent Local.

Silent Local is a New Zealand producer of Jazz infused Liquid D&B. Here’s his new single We Could. The track is described as “half time liquid D&B ambient deep base” which sounds like someone wanting to cover all bases. And yet there is truth here.

We Could spends its whole time teetering on the edge. It’s on the edge of a supremely evil bass line that gives the track real presence and a dynamic punch. And yet that’s offset by a delicately beautiful vocal (no idea who she is).

The beats have a Spartan precision that’s pretty astringent and yet the melodies are lush and languid. More yin and yang. A track that’s edgy but also almost pop.

A fantastic example of the possibilities of liquid drum and bass to captivate and yet lull you into spaciness.

IDM delights with Spirograph – Onwards

Queen's House Greenwich
Spiral Saircase – The Queen’s House, Royal Museums Greenwich

Blame Canada. No really, but do enjoy Canada’s Spirograph with some lovely light IDM on Onwards.

Spirograph is Gord Westmacott. He’s a radio producer for CBC Radio in Toronto, Ontario. That makes Spirograph his side hustle, I guess. And rather good it is too.

Onward is his new single. It’s from the forthcoming third Spirograph album, Stepwise which will be released on 2 August.

Onward is quite a 90s flavoured track. It has bits of Aphex Twin and lots of Boards of Canada as reference points. It’s that sort of IDM which is totally electronic but has an organic feel about it.

The beats have the right sort of tippy tappy feel for IDM. They sit alongside a background kinda acid squiggle that enhances that electronic, alien edge.

Meanwhile some synth organ chords parp away both melancholically and cheerily, all at the same time. There’s a bit of spaciness and a welcome wooziness.

One of those tracks that has lots of good things going on and leaves your day 14% better than it was before. Go grab your 14%.

Ambient synthwave for a heatwave with: Zforms and gens_abo

•June 27, 2024 • Leave a Comment

T’was only weeks ago when I was moaning about the endless rain and now it’s too damn hot. Can’t cope with anything too dynamic so a couple of Ambient Synthwave tracks from Zforms, and gens_abo.

Zforms is a sound designer and engineer from Portugal. The featured track is Intermissions, taken from a compilation called Resilience on Lo-fi Clouds label.

Intermissions starts off with a low bass tone and that creepy insect rustling sound oft used in the 90s. It’s all evocative and unsettling.

A bass synth arrives with a buzzing throb. This gives the track pulsing, beat driven quality but also keeps everything low key.

A melody eventually arrives at 1:20 to squelch away in a lightly acid manner. This has all the hallmarks of quality 90s European ambient.

A really lovely track that manages a calming appeal with enough edge both of anxiety and euphoria to never quite let you settle.

Keeping in Southern Europe but moving to Italy here’s gens_abo. He’s got a suitably hardcore electronic background. His biog says “gens_abo was born in a medieval provincial village in Italy. He started going to FreeTekno raves at a young age to escape the monotony of the country and got fascinated by the environment and the extreme freedom of the FreeParty movement.” As for his sound, “The two Korg Electribe drum machines he bought let him develop the movement, often performing in an altered states of consciousness.”

Here’s new single Precious on Dancecode Electronics. It’s a lovely dark synthwave piece. Reminds me of a one-man Kraftwerk effort mixed with a 90s electronica.

This is all about the synths. It’s unashamedly electronic. They start dark and a little stentorian. They then develop out into something almost euphoric.

By 1:20 there’s a dive off into sounds that revel in the 70s heart of synthwave music. Almost synth pop in places it gambols freely. Beats are there but kept in check behind the synths.

Synth music at its finest as it pumps its way along. A beautiful way to spend five minutes. Come and join in.

Summer DnB with: ZUSO – Amber

•June 24, 2024 • Leave a Comment

A track with which to relax in summers warmth from ZUSO.

ZUSO is from Australia and is producer Gabriel Cuenca. His work normally has that uplifting prog house richness redolent of people like Rüfüs Du Sol, Lane 8 and Tourist. But today there’s a dnb take on things to accompany the smooth melodies.

The track is new single Amber. And it’s a warm and rich as the colour of the title.

It opens with the flutter of electronics and warm washes of synths before letting the beats in. The beats have a liquid drum and bass precision but a touch more depth. But everything is kept light and lithe. And a crisp production only enhances the effect.

The beats dance around in the sunlight. Keyboards give a dynamic emotional tone to the piece. There’s an ebb and flow to this track that speaks of confidence to hold a break until you’re good and ready. And it comes in a restrained tumble of beats.

A lovely listening experience which sadly goes for a fade out rather than the precise full stop it deserves.

Ambient Sunday is feeling a bit moody with: Unleavened – greensboro

•June 23, 2024 • Leave a Comment

Ambient Sunday is casting around the edges of sound with a quietly moody piece from US artist Unleavened.

Unleavened says “Living in Texas and making music that I’m motivated or interested in making.” They’re from Pflugerville, a suburb of Austin. Here’s a track from their Moving Forward EP.

The track is greensboro (which is in North Carolina – so no idea of the relevance). Anyhow, this is at the far end of fragile. A track so gossamer thin it’s almost not there. And therein lies its delicate beauty. A mix of drone, ambient and the slightest hint of synth wave.

Unleavened says “I tried to capture the feeling of being alone, depressed, or just lost.” It’s a track of soft tones and held melodies. The sound is weightless but also has that feeling of falling. Perhaps imperceptibly at first but achingly so as the track moves on.

There’s no real ‘tune’ as such. This is a brilliantly realised musical mood. It less stops as such more fades out of existence. Captivating.

Downtempo ain’t necessarily laidback with: Phat Panda – Snap Draggin’

•June 23, 2024 • Leave a Comment

It’s been a warm summers day. Time for downtempo but a downtempo that largely displaces the chill for ice cool. Here’s Phat Panda.

Phat Panda says by way of background “As both the son and grandson of Baptist ministers in Metro Detroit, my exposure to secular music was limited throughout much of my early childhood. The exception was 2 records that my Mother kept in the house…”The Commodore’s -The Composer Series” & “Chicago.” It was with these two albums, blended with my roots in gospel that I began my musical exploration and developed an eternal thirst to discover, learn, and create.”

None of which explains the warped instrumental hip hop assault that is Snap Draggin’. This is the heaviest of hip hop beats blended with sounds that owe more to rave and The Chemical Brothers’ heaviosity.

About the track, Phat Panda says “This track in particular was one of my first beats I made after about a 15 year hiatus. I made it with the intent to just “get out” the emotion I was holing onto at that time.”

Clearly a whole bunch of repressed anger then. The beats have a weighty thunder amid the electronic noise. But there’s also a keen intelligence at work as a lovely organ melody gives the track a little lightness and wonder. This keen

ps you on your toes with its regular switches of sound. From light to dark and back again. Very much not your usual instrumental hip hip hop. And that’s to be celebrated.

New IDM electronica release from Fractal Architect

•June 21, 2024 • Leave a Comment

After a gap of six months we have a new EP from UK ambient electronica artist Fractal Architect.

Fractal Architect is DJ and producer Dan Watts from Bristol, UK who has been around the electronic music scene since the late 80s. His work has a strong taste of Ambient, IDM and classy electronica. Here’s a couple of tracks from his new Electric Mountain EP.

First, 1.7 Earths. It’s a lovely track for something with such a catastrophic title. I think the title relates to the fact that humanity is using nature 1.7 times faster than our planet’s biocapacity can regenerate. That’s equivalent to using the resources of 1.7 Earths.

The track opens quietly with an early morning dawn tone before the beats come in. The track gradually accelerates thereafter as synths come to sit alongside the beats. It’s all rippling utopia among the prospect of devastation.

Eventually, acid lines squiggle their way into hearing giving the track a bit more grit and urban sensations. But even then there’s still optimism and beauty at play.

Secondly here’s the title track Electric Mountain. This is the downer contrast to 1.7 Earths. Synthetic strings saw away unhappily. The track is dominated by the mournful thrum of the bass line. Beats are Spartan and everything is a bit pessimistic.

A keening wordless vocal tells us all is lost. An elegy for our planet. Much more synthwave than the electronica of the other track. This is Jean Michel Jarre’s Oxygene for the C21st. Nothing revelling in technology. Sadness is the key here.

Ambient synth pop from: Losange – Beacon

•June 20, 2024 • Leave a Comment

A bit of pre-Friday chill with Losange involving some synth pop lullaby.

Losange is Benoit Baudrin from France. His biog is the enigmatically French “just note. all or nothing. computer music”

Here’s Beacon, a single release alongside Arlequin, ahead of new album Lost Treasures. Of Beacon Losange says “The beacon represents a sort of banner for a certain idea of electronic music, focused on melody and harmony, without any beat. I prefer to call it computer music because it better reflects how it is produced, that is, in a purely integrated, purely synthetic, purely written manner.”

This is synth pop as ambient classical. The structures have a lot of neo classical about them but without the organic textures. This is unashamedly computerised music. And jolly lovely it is too. Synths parp gently and throb in a soothing lullaby.

This is one of those tracks that you want to call pretty. It’s cute, winsome and gambols around without a care in the world. There’s a little reverb to stop it entering the domain of twee. But it is such a delightful track that it’s hard to bear it any malice. And in the end all you can do is smile at its loveliness.
