Niantic Employees were at the Amstelveen Mall on Saturday talking to trainers, here are some answers to common questions.

Intro Even though the events were 'cancelled' there were big banners up, Pikachu hats and two Niantic employees from SF office there going round talking to trainers. They were asking us to do a small questionnaire in exchange for some free team stickers. I'd just like to say at this point they were really friendly and easy to talk to and everyone really appreciated them being there to anwser our concerns and questions. We were first approached by them for a general chat for about 20mins or so and then we went back to ask them more questions. The person we spoke to was in the 'Operations' department and had a deep understanding of the 'big picture' of the game.

Disclaimer: The answers to the questions are not quotes, It all from memory a few days after the event so don't take the answers as official word from Niantic.

Q&A

Why are the raids finishing so early?

This was a leftover bug from the Chicago event as eggs are still meant to be part of raids but they didn't want to risk updating the code while all these big events are currently going on. They want to extend the raid times. When pushed on what time they will be extended too, we mentioned midnight but they said that was too late.

Will we be able to spin Gyms with our Go+?

This is something they are working on but it isn't as easy as spinning a normal stop due to bonus for badges, team bonus and raid passes. So this still needs more time in QA.

Will Pokemon Go players be able to add stops like Ingress players?

(This was quite a big picture anwser) The data they have from all the portals/stops are what set Niantic apart from other companies so its in Niantic's best interest to make sure there are a good supply of pokestops around the whole world for everyone to access. This is on their roadmap but we were also then reminded that they are still '6 months behind' their original schedule so sounds like it isn't coming anytime soon. At this point we also got a demo of Ingress portal submissions and how it all worked. (I really appreciated the fact they took so much time to explain this, it showed how important it was to them.)

How do raid spawns work, are they random?

(This was explained so eloquently and I'm going to butcher it, sorry!) Raids spawns are spilt into blocks across the world and it's set to spawn X amount of raids across a certain area in X amount of time.

Will there be a in-game chat?

(This was the most vague anwser of them all so wasn't sure what the take away was here) They were being very vague but the main point they were getting across was - to think about if it would be in Niantic/Pokemon Company best interest to have one. We were also reminded again they are 6 months behind.

EDIT: I just remembered I also asked why Tauros is so rare compared to Mr. Mime here in Europe

He said they will look into it since it shouldn't be so much rarer, but that it can be hard to find the right balance for visitors/people that live there.

I hope this helps clear some things up for everyone, and kinda wish Niantic would just do a Q&A with one of the Youtubers or a AMA here etc as they seemed very happy to anwser questions.

We asked lots of other questions and reported a few bugs but it's hard to remember them all. If this post takes off and you want 'proof' I have some but I'd only feel comfortable sending it to the Mods as I don't want to give out personal info of myself/the Niantic employees.

Deadly accident in Amstelveen caused by mismatched threads

A lot of you might have not heard of it, but last sunday there was a deadly accident in a swimming pool close to where I live where a dive instructor died because a tank exploded.

The Dutch labor inspection have now released a safety warning that explains what happened (google translated from Dutch to English):

https://www-nlarbeidsinspectie-nl.translate.goog/actueel/nieuws/2022/10/20/veiligheidswaarschuwing-duikflessen?_x_tr_sl=auto&_x_tr_tl=en&_x_tr_hl=en&_x_tr_pto=wapp

Basically; the threading of the tank and the threading of the valve were mismatched. A stupid freak accident that is totally preventable if people had paid attention, unfortunately.

Anyway; wanted to share this because I was totally unaware that the different sizes are close enough that this can happen.

Amsterdam vs Amstelveen?

Hi all!

My boyfriend (31) and I (26) are planning to move to the Netherlands in 3 years, and we're both currently living in New York.

I'm a grad student at NYU and my bf is a software engineer at Google, and both of us are not from the US, only my bf has a green card, and I'm on a student visa.

We've been toying with the idea of moving to somewhere else for a while, and we've decided that moving outside of the US is better for starting a family.

The Netherlands is on the top of our list along with Canada. We were in Amsterdam this summer for a week and we absolutely loved it.

So we've been looking up properties on Funda.nl for fun mainly in Amsterdam(and we're actually planning to purchase a property in the Netherlands when we move there to settle down) and we ran into Amstelveen where it has much more affordable properties and beautiful houses(which we prefer over apartments/townhouses).

So we're leaning towards Amstelveen, with other reasons such as its close proximity to Amsterdam Zuid where my bf's work would be(Google Amsterdam), and probably to my potential workplace too!

Here are some of the questions I have;

- Any recommendations on websites for looking up properties in the Netherlands?

- I'll be working as a product designer, which is a mix of engineering+design etc, and probably at a tech company or design agency. Would there be available jobs for a foreigner who doesn't speak Dutch in that field in Amsterdam?

- How's living in Amstelveen? Our priority is to have enough space to start a family in a house, so nightlife/bars are not that much of a priority. But at the same time, we'd prefer somewhere we can get things we need conveniently and a public transit nearby so we don't always have to bike or drive. Would Amstelveen be ideal in this situation?

- Are there other parts of the Netherlands you'd like to recommend? My boyfriend's work will be in Amsterdam Zuid, so it should be less than 1 hour of a commute from there.

Thanks for reading!

Crazy, everyone in our local group was refreshing and as soon as the link was posted on Facebook, a bunch of us already got errors. Only two of us got a ticket, luckily I was fast enough.

Sorry to everyone who wasn't as fortunate!

Safari Zone Amstelveen Experience

This won't overly long text with my feelings. Just some facts.

  • Had network error 4 times for a minute. The rest of the day was perfect so kudos. The ticket line was fast and everyone was happy. No problems in public. The staff was friendly and quite eager to explain. The event were quite spread out forcing you to walk 6/7 times the whole route. I felt I walked 10 km or something like that..

  • There was no special spawn. No Dragonite, Snorlax, or Tyranitar. All standard and the starter evolutions from Gen 1. Gen 2 had no final evolutions.

  • The Pokestops mostly gave 2-3 Pokeballs and 1 berry. This wasn't a problem because I kept walking and there was a stop every 10 metres or less. Still I couldn't stop spinning and relax because there were more Pokemon than Balls.

  • The decor could use some dressing up. Aside from 3 tents, a few posters here and there. A wall where you could meet Pikachu. That's it. The pictures from Safari Zone elsewhere were more impressive. The lounges for Team Valor and Team Instinct were together and small with 4 places per team to sit. Team Mystic was on the opposite of the mall and smaller. Just a decor. No tent whereas Valor and Instinct had.

/edit After posting this, I mulled over the day and thought of the possible reason for this: the past week had very bad weather and suddenly it cleared up for today, shining bright pun intended. So I think they had to scramble up a few tents or something like that, to make use of the weather outside. Still it doesn't clarify why there were 3 places to sit per team.

  • I managed to walk 18 eggs out and get 9 more before event ended. The last 9 is still untouched and will do that on my own time. From the first 18 was 9 Pichu, no shiny. I did hatch a 82 IV Shiny Magikarp though. Most random hatch was a Chinchou while he was nowhere to be seen in the wild.

  • Found 4 Shiny Magikarp in the wild and 1 Shiny Pikachu. Tried 180 Pikachu. So catch rate is very off or RNG.

  • I quite enjoyed the day and am happy that I went. Heard from the people outside the Zone that they had problems and needed to move a lot..

If interested, I will post pictures and I will answer questions about Safari Zone if asked.

Greetings,

A very happy player.

Amstelveen D&D club.

Question about the VRA cricket stadium in Amstelveen in the Netherlands

Just finished a quick trip to the Netherlands and visited the VRA stadium. Firstly let me say I was fascinated with the facilities i always new the Netherlands had good cricket stuff but this had me shocked and In my opinion they’re easily the best team in Europe bar England. However I also saw this tree in the ground that was actually inside the boundary ropes. https://sport360.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/Amstelveen.jpg

It was a big tree and it looks hard to get rid of so I understand why it was there but was wondering if there was ever a time in a professional game where the ball hit the tree and if so what happend ? Thanks a lot guys
