Until recently, I really hated atonal music, and mostly considered it a soulless intellectual exercise lacking in musicality and human sentiment. But then I dug into the Berg concerto and realized how wrong I was. It’s gorgeous! Not just gorgeous by atonal standards, but really beautiful by any measure. I have read that Berg wrote the piece to synthesize 12 tons techniques with free atonality and tonal passages, and that the tone row is constructed with tonal patterns, so I imagine that’s why I find it so approachable. Can you recommend other pieces that are similar, so I can expand my pallet further?
I am curious about pieces that-
Combine atonal and tonal characteristics
Employ tone rows that are designed to produce harmonious sounds
Have clear and pleasant orchestration
Etc.
-EDIT- Not necessarily saying I’m only interested in recommendations with all of these characteristics, I’m just tossing out a few examples of things I think I might like. Other music in a similar vein but with different features would also be greatly appreciated!
Thanks!
