the greatest show i’ve ever kinda hated watching

might get downvoted - but after switching over from TCW/Bad Batch straight to rebels, it was suuuuper jarring at first. i watched most of the seasons just wishing it was like clone wars animation.

but somewhere around season 3 it grew on me and by season 4 i downright liked it. always really dug the fact its macquarrie concept art come to life. anyone else have that happen?

Rebels is the Star Wars no one knew they wanted or needed. And then Jedi night happens and you’re never the same again

Casual interest turned into not moving from your seat turned into ending up gutted.

Fucking gutted for fuck sake.

This is exactly my reaction.

Yuuuuuuuuuuup

Dude, I never thought I’d get into Rebels. Jedi Night ruined me, most I’ve cried over a Star Wars character. I enjoyed the seasons but especially at season 3 and 4, Kanan and Hera are my favorite couple.

Liked it from the jump. First episode was super charming, fun, and the more childish aspects didn't bother me one bit.

Yes I had a similar thing. And then when I finished I looped back around. And then again, and again. And now I will choose Rebels over TCW every time. Not that I dislike TCW, but Rebels is the ideal of SW media for me

TCW has far more meh episodes and several that I just skip. Several that come to mind:

'Bombad Jedi, 'Evil Plans', 'Hunt for Ziro', 'Nomad Droids, 'Supply Lines', and that one where Padmé makes a speech to the Senate like fifteen minutes after learning that poverty exists...I forget the name. Oh and the one where Baron Papanoida's family gets kidnapped.

I think there's only one Rebels episode that I skip, the one with those spider thingies

No down votes from me. Rebels does start off a bit immature. I had to promise a friend I'd give it thru Season 1. Boy am I glad I did. Take it episode by episode, some don't stand on their own, but as a whole it is a VERY well conceived vision of a Star Wars "family" fighting against the odds. Not to say there aren't Several exemplary episodes, because there are, especially starting with Season Two, but I see it as a Saga of it's own, full of emotion and some damn fine Star Wars lore and story telling.

I put off watching this for years bc of the art style. But when they announced Ahsoka my boyfriend finally convinced me to watch it in preparation

I shit you not it's probably my favorite animated star wars. It was insane. The beginning is fun but can feel a little juvenile. Like everyone is such a moron I can't take any threat to the main characters seriously. Then Darth Vader shows up and he is somehow the most terrifying entity I've ever seen, and everything just improves from there. I honestly still can't believe how good this show was.

Me actively watching Chopper’s little claw grab Hera’s hand and sobbing as I’ve read this

Me actively watching Chopper destroying two arquitens-class cruisers and an interdictor with little more than a little SCOMP action as I've read this

I get you. When I first started Rebels after having watched TCW, it was jarring to me too. The animation in particular just felt so iffy. It took a little while for me to really get into it. But once I did, I fell for the show hard. (And it helps that the animation does improve; it’s also easy to forget how janky the early parts of TCW looked too.)

I’ve probably rewatched it more than any other SW show (I’ve watched Andor three full times; I don’t think I’ve successfully finished a full rewatch of any of the others). It’s just so charming and rewarding to watch all the way through.

People tend to dislike the first 2 two seasons because of how much more childish it comes off as compared to clone wars. It grows on you though, even those first few don’t seem so bad with time

Okay, now....let it simmer in your head space for a while. In a few weeks or, when you have the chance again, do a rewatch.

Come back to this space and tell us about it!

I second that.

I love reading all these posts of people coming into Rebels or giving it a try after some time. It was and still is an amazing series. I honestly wish there was a group of characters like this in the live action world that were as good as what we got here.

I hate the animation style of Rebels, always will, but I ended up enjoying the show for the plot and most of the characters (Hera my beloved).

I honestly prefer the Rebels animation to TCW, but I can totally understand how it can be jarring at first.

u/ambiguously_yours avatar

Yeah. I couldn't stand TCW animation until late in its run and I had stopped watching long before that, catching up after Rebels ended. In comparison, the Rebels animation was gorgeous. I still can't watch the first two seasons of TCW without wincing.

Yeah, when you start watching rebels you have to quickly get used to the low budget animation and have faith that its a good show. And it is. The story and the storytelling are amazing.

And that one episode... you know the one... made me cry a river of manly man tears 😭

u/pentekno2 avatar

Yeah I personally didn't really get into it until the end of season 1 when Ahsoka showed up. If I were to rewatch it I might honestly start at season 2.

I know I'm going to get ripped for this opinion but so be it.

I felt the exact same way, but on a rewatch you will notice so many breadcrumbs in season one. It is so much better on rewatch.

I was half on my phone through season one and sneering at the television but I had a friend that kept asking if I had gotten to season 3....and look at me now.

As a huuuuge Rebels fan (seriously, I think it is some of the best Star Wars content outside of George Lucas’ 6 films) I totally agree with you. Jarring is a good way of putting it. But you do get used to it and the characters grow on you.

I disliked that Lazer slingshot, once it was out of the picture I was good lmao

Hated the style of rebels at first but now it’s my favorite.

Really, the only problem I had on my second rewatch were how they treated some characters. More specifically, Hondo Onaka.

Dude was going to sell Asohka into sex slavery but now he is an objective, good guy by season 4. Gives up wealth to help the Specters.

Or how the Mandolorians are now suddenly against the use of "unfair" weapons (the armor disintegrator). Like ask a Cathar or Basalisks who the Mandolorians are

I do wish Hondo still had his TCW swag.

Oh the show is wonderfully written, but Yoda is burned into my nightmares

For me, it wasn't so much the animation style (though the difference IS substantial and i do prefer TCW's style more - especially now, after they pretty much perfected it as seen in shows like TBB and the "Tales of"), but the approach. It seemed so much more lighthearted, sillier and for kids. Not that any of that is a bad thing, per se, it just didn't seem like it'd be for me. And then things like the Empire using Luminara's mummified corpse as bait for Jedi happened or the duel between Kanaan and the Geand Inquisitor happened. And then Vader turned up and was very much Vader indeed. And Ahsoka and Rex returned. And on and on and on...

And nowadays, Rebels has some of my favorite canon SW-moments/episodes, like Twighlight of the Apprentice, Twin Suns or, of course, Jedi Night.

Not sure how useful that comparison is for people on here, but it's a bit like Rebels is for Star Wars what Batman: The Brave and the Bold is for Batman-cartoons.

There's a really great video on youtube..YouTube... it might be called something like "Star Wars Rebels: A lesson in hope". It's like an hour and a half long and goes through what a lot of the development was like as the first animated project following clone wars. It has spoilers in it though, beware. It was jarring for everyone, not just us viewers at first!

Yup. The wild thing is after that exact experience I restarted Rebels with my son and deeply and fully enjoyed about 90% of season one and two.

u/Skibot99 avatar

Surprised you stuck with it so long if you disliked the first 2 seasobs

I had a similar initial reaction. Once I finished all of TCW I was avoiding rebels because the animation was different. I watched the first episode and put off continuing for months, once I finally committed to watching it and got used to the animation I absolutely loved it and rewatch it frequently.

Lots of people hated it initially for that reason. It wasn't until people gave it a chance that it grew on everyone. Me personally I didn't watch it until I was 18 and I'm 20 now just because I was alway told it was kiddie and had bad animation. Now it's my favorite peice of star wars media.

u/SmokeMaleficent9498 avatar

My favorite episode I hated watching was kanan's sacrifice it hit me harder than plan 99.

My favorite scene of all times in Rebels was Obi-Wan duel with Darth maul. He dispatches him in 3 moves. I loved it..

I think it had to grow on most of us. It’s my favorite Star Wars story and one of if not my favorite shows/stories period.

But I remember watching it on Disney XD and while I never hated it, there was definitely a sentiment of “just give it a shot” for many of the episodes. I remember getting to the end of season one and thinking “OK I’ll stick with it”. But halfway through season two I moved and no longer had access to Disney XD. When it came out on Disney+ I finally got to binge the whole thing properly and was shocked to find myself so captivated and moved by the story and characters.

I remember my father telling me that when most people first heard Led Zeppelin’s “stairway to Heaven” it took a few listens to grow on them and become the hit it is today. I kind of feel similarly about rebels. Once people give it a shot and see it through to the end they tend to appreciate it or even grow to love it.

For me it became much less of a slog to get through (aside from the first two episodes) my first time watching after they got rid of Ezra's stupid slingshot thing and he built a lightsaber. Thought it became pretty good by the last three episodes of the first season.

Thought it became truly enjoyable once Rex came back with them on the Spectre.

By the end of the second season I was absolutely hooked, particularly after 'The Forgotten Droid' (wherein Chopper goes absolutely ham on that Imperial captain aboard the super-freighter). After that there were very few episodes I didn't quite care for ('Iron Squadron' and 'Wynkahthu Job' e.g.).

Season four, especially after 'Rebel Assault', is just straight-up some of the best Star Wars there is.

Out of all the shows u mentioned it's definitely at the bottom for me

Actually the acolyte is the worst show you’ve watched
