Why can't a target audience be everyone? by cielo_mu in marketing

[–]Scrumpto34 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Think bow and arrow. Every animal CAN be your target but do you really want to target rats? What about hummingbirds? They’re kind of small and fast making them hard to hit and there’s not much meat on the bones. What about elephants? They’re big and easy to hit but cleaning them is gonna suck, you’re going to waste a lot of meat, it’s going to take a lot of arrows and what if they charge you?

You see, everything CAN be your target but not everything SHOULD be your target!

Oh, look, a deer in range…. Get the idea?

I’ve owned an agency for 28 years. We don’t take small jobs as they’re not worth the time. We don’t take on huge jobs as they take all your time. And we don’t take on jerks (rats) as they make your life miserable. There is, however, a sweet spot and that’s our target market.

Success comes from finding your sweet spot and targeting it.

Find patterns in categorical data by shen_7 in analytics

[–]Scrumpto34 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay, I'm sure there's a more elegant way but this works. ACME is a Valid company because they have one Valid row. All the others are Invalid because they have Invalid rows but no Valid row. Thus the Invalid count is 2.

Note: In my formulas, I ended the array at row 100. Just put in your correct number of records. There's a simple way to count your actual dataset but I didn't want to get overly complex.

A B C D E
1 Company Status Unique Valid? Invalid Count
2 ACME Valid ACME Valid 2
3 ACME Invalid Bupkis Invalid
4 Bupkis Invalid Cartel Invalid
5 Bupkis Invalid
6 Cartel Invalid

C2: =UNIQUE(A2:A100)

D2 (and then copy the formula down as far as column C goes): =IF(COUNTIFS($A$2:$A$100,C2,$B$2:$B$100,"Valid")>0,"Valid",IF(COUNTIFS($A$2:$A$100,C2,$B$2:$B$100,"Invalid"),"Invalid"))

E2: =COUNTIF(D2:D100,"Invalid")

D Column formula explanation: If the company in column C has a status of "Valid" anywhere in column B (up to row 100), then the company is "Valid". Else, if the company in column C has a status of "Invalid" in the same range, it's "Invalid".

Hopefully, this is what you need. Sorry, it's not more elegant.

I'm not positive I understand what your data looks like but here's an example.

1 A B C
2 Company Name Status 3
3 ACME Valid
4 AAA Invalid
5 Bank of Idaho Valid
6 Clean Coal Inc. Invalid
7 Dumb Dumb LLC Invalid

Cell C1 is: =COUNTIF($B$2:$B$7,"Invalid")

Is that what you need?

Ya, it's pretty easy to imagine a panicked person just trying to keep their nose above the water line. Once the front of the car dives down there would be a clear path following the water line upward to the back hatch along the inside of the car roof. Once in the back, the only way out is down through the dark, through the seats to an open window that water is still rushing in. And finally, once the car tips over fully there's just no way to find your way out.

Watch some videos on what happens when water rushes into a car and then see if you could not panic and find your way out. Good luck.

I use Google Sheets for tasks like this due to some functions that are better than Excel (for my purposes).

I take a simple visual approach to start by using conditional formatting. Let's use age, gender, and length of employment as an example. I'll color the age field (column) and length of employment using the red - yellow - green formatting with red being older people and longer lengths of employment and green for younger and shorter lengths. I'll then color gender something like blue and pink with purple being for "other." I'll then play around with sorting the data and look for patterns.

For instance, you might find that when you sort by the shortest lengths of employment, then lowest age, and then gender and scroll that colored patterns emerge.

The next thing I do is run countif formulas. So I'll create a unique list of ages with a formula like unique(b2:b) and then I'll run countif or countifs formulas next to them to give me summary data. I might see logical patterns in ages and run some if functions to group the ages and count those.

Are there more advanced ways of looking at the data? Absolutely. But when I'm simply looking for patterns, I like using color to make the patterns stand out to start with.

I think Kiely made a wrong turn and thought she was on the dirt road leading out to the paved road. I also think she was going 20 mph when she hit the water.

Consider this image.

The light blue (cyan) path is the exit from the party as I understand it. At the end of the blue line, she would have been looking across the road and downhill into a ravine. If she made a left to the green arrow she would be driving with a ravine on her right side toward the paved road and home.

However, if she accidentally turned right and followed the red path she would have arrived looking down a ravine at the end of the red arrow similar to the end of the blue arrow. She would have then made the left turn assuming she was at the green line but instead followed the yellow line with a ravine on her right (exactly what she expected).

Based on my calculations, the distance from the red arrow to the place her car went into the water is 1,000 feet. If you watch the video, you can see she stops and pauses at the red arrow and then turns left and accelerates. In the video, the turn is indicated by the dimming of the lights. This happens at 00:32:36:12 (12:32:36 am). You can see it here.

My best guess of when the car hits the water as it seems to stop forward momentum for a few seconds is at 00:33:22:xx (12:33:22 am) though it could have been even sooner. Elapsed time = 46 seconds.

Do the math. That's roughly 22 feet/second which is 15 mph. This includes her acceleration from a stop so she was probably going 20 mph when she hit the water. If she wasn't wearing her seatbelt, she could have easily been knocked unconscious. Even if she wasn't, it was pitch black out there, water would have been rushing in rapidly, she was drunk, and the car rolled over. Any experienced scuba diver will tell you it's impossible to know which way is up without a reference point such as your bubbles rising. Her chances of being able to save herself in that situation was probably near zero.

So what's with the orange dashed line? This is the route people have assumed she took. From watching the people who have driven that route, 5 mph is a generous max speed. In this drone footage, she took the path on the far left (my yellow line) instead of the middle one which I represented with the dashed orange line.

Here's what happens at 10 mph when you're not wearing a seatbelt. I would imagine the autopsy will reveal much more and whether she was wearing the seatbelt.

So what about the lack of airbags? I don't know but I would imagine driving into water at an angle is different than hitting a brick wall and may not trigger them properly.

Do we know LE hasn't known about this footage all along? Isn't it possible they've known since the car was found but haven't released that info?

Don't get me started on why they didn't use it to find the car in the first place!

Is it worth starting a specialised Google Ads agency? by tom_spur in agency

[–]Scrumpto34 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could provide a white-label service to other agencies as well. Lots of small web design and marketing shops just don't have the staff, skills, or bandwidth to keep a team of paid search people around but would love to make some extra monthly cash from their clients for doing nothing except customer service and billing.

Yes but then diversify. So, start with Google ads and then add Google Analytics installation and analysis, SEO, etc.

Here's the video with the timeline starting just before she makes the fatal turn to the left and heads for the water. Her car is the top of the two white dots on the left.

Here's the route it appears she took from the video. I get the feeling she was trying to follow the other cars, got to the intersection, and simply guessed the wrong direction but who knows what she was thinking.

What we know

  • The video is pretty clear and matches up with the time her phone last pinged. It's pretty clear the car was driven into the lake and we know she was in it.
  • She was an inexperienced driver.
  • She was likely very impaired.
  • It was dark and very likely difficult to see. If you haven't seen the video of the guy who drove out there at night and nearly drove into the lake -- you should watch it. I think it was the guy who recovered her laptop. Before watching that video I found it hard to believe she could have driven straight into the lake without seeing it. After watching that video, I now understand -- she wouldn't have seen it until just before she hit it. Throw in impaired reaction time and it's more than plausible that someone could drive straight into the lake.

And that's pretty much what we know.

Could there have been someone in the passenger seat who got out the open window? Sure. But other than the open window, we don't have any proof of that. Could someone else have been driving and got out? Yes, that's possible. Could she have been unconscious in the back with someone else driving who got out? Of course, that's also possible.

The reason for all the arguing is that people are jumping to conclusions and claiming they're right about something they can't be right about because none of us knows. Stick to the facts and settle down. Ignore the conspiracy theories and just keep waiting until more information like these videos to come out.

All that said, I have some thoughts from my own personal experiences going to parties out in the woods by lakes and rivers in my youth.

  • It seems like the driver was lost. Even sober it would be easy to get turned around in the dark on all those crazy roads. Note: The roads shown on Google Maps aren't the only roads. Look at the drone footage and you'll see other roads down closer to the water so there are tons of roads.
  • Speaking of, there's lots of speculation about the cars doubling back. If you look at camera footage you'll see them pull down to the bottom left and then turn around and go out the other way. If you look at the drone footage you can see that they would have needed to cross a creek going out that way so they turned around.
  • As for anyone paying attention to her car and why she went off in another direction, that's not an issue. When you're out at parties like these if you didn't drive there with a group of cars and leave with the same group of cars, nobody is going to pay attention to you. The driver of the car that went into the lake was off on their own based on what I can see.

Understood. But then again, I'm older than most of their fathers. I started working on computers in 1980 before DOS and have never stopped. I only made the statement as I get tired of everyone either in support or on the internet starting off by treating you like you're a noob. Over the decades I've found and reported bugs in most of the major office and graphical arts software packages as my clients pushed them to the limits. And unless I was in an official advisory capacity (which sometimes I was), I'd have to start with a level 1 rep and convince them that, no, restarting the computer (again!) won't solve the problem ;-)

Am I new to Sonos? Yep. Did I read every part of the manual? Nope. There are things you read the manual for and things you don't as they're just supposed to work when you turn them on. A microwave comes to mind -- it's not the type of thing you read the manual for and when it shuts off randomly or refuses to start -- it's not a "read the manual" issue, it's a "this thing is a defective POS" issue. Sonos falls into that category. It's just supposed to work and when it doesn't, it's not user error -- it's a defective product.
