VPN discussion – ask all your VPN related Tor questions here

Many VPN related questions in r/Tor are very repetitive, which is frustrating to regulars. We will direct all such questions to this thread instead of individual posts. Please use the search function before asking, and read the rest of this post.

Should I use a VPN with Tor?

You might have seen conflicting advice on this, and now you just want the definitive answer. Unfortunately, there's no simple yes/no answer.

In general, you don't need to use a VPN with Tor. Tor is designed to provide anonymity on its own. Tor Project generally recommends against it.

A VPN probably doesn't help nor hurt your anonymity. If you already have an always-on VPN, you can use Tor Browser without turning it off.

A VPN might conceal from your internet service provider (ISP) the fact that you're using Tor, in exchange for giving the VPN provider this insight. None of them can see what you're using Tor for, only that you're using it. Keep in mind that you don't have strong anonymity from your VPN; they can see where you connect from, and if you paid non-anonymously, they know your identity outright.

If you worry specifically about your internet provider knowing you use Tor, you should look into bridges.

If you're in a small community where you might be the only person connecting to Tor (such as a workplace or a school), and you use Tor to talk about that community, the network administrators might be able to infer that it's you. A VPN or a bridge protects against this.

Tor at work Tor at work

I want to use Tor to browse regular sites during work. Have a lot of downtime but want to fly under the radar as much as possible. Can my work IT see my Internet traffic using Tor if I connect to their wifi?

Edit: I should clarify, I have Tor on my personal laptop. I wouldn't use my work computer. I would run Tor on my personal laptop, but connected to work wifi. Also, I work for a place where thousands of people log onto our network. I do need my work credentials to log onto the WiFi however. Also also, is it much different from using a VPN to browse clear net? Like, as far as I know, my place of work has never mentioned that I am not allowed to use my personal laptop nor that I can't have Tor. Honestly, they don't care that I'm on my laptop nor even what I'm doing on it, but on the off chance that they look, I'm wondering if they can see my traffic lol

Tha la for getting me all nervous though, fellas lol

Tor leaves unexpectedly after a few seconds Tor leaves unexpectedly after a few seconds

Hi guys, I'm writing this post because I haven't found any answers on the doc so I'm trying to get some solutions on this forum.

When I launch Tor, the application launches, the window opens and then quits instantly after a few seconds. This is a recent problem as I've always used Tor and it worked fine. For your information:

  • MacOS Sonoma 14.5

  • tor-browser-macos-13.0.16

Thanks for your help.

Any technical analyses on why Tor is bad on android? Any technical analyses on why Tor is bad on android?

I know the first thing yall going to say is the OS itself is not not private and gathers stuff on you.

HOWEVER ive installed LineageOS which is a private degoogled android ROM. And I do trust this version of it so the OS i think is safe now.

Ofc no playstore or any other nonsense on my tablet so installed Tor with its official APK.

And now I wonder what the limitations of it in terms of privacy and anonymity are going to be.

Threat level is moderate. Mostly using clearnet sites without javascript. And doing nothing you could go to jail for and no download really. Sometimes on the dark web for some news as well.

Ok the main thing I would like to know and I feel is important is what is being saved/cached on the device itself. Does the android version of Tor browser leave any traces on the device behind maybe in a deep cache folder somewhere or is still all that stuff deleted at the moment i close the app? (Also asking in case i sell it to someone)

Or would you say that if you trust its OS LineageOS in this case, its as secure as a desktop pc?

And are there any other down sides or flaws the app has on android?

"Connection Time Out" When Setting Up Tor Website "Connection Time Out" When Setting Up Tor Website

I am currently trying to host a Tor webpage on a Contabo VPS in a docker container. However, I am unable to establish connections to relays with the message:

Problem bootstrapping. Stuck at 5% (conn): Connecting to a relay. (Connection timed out; TIMEOUT; count 10; recommendation warn; host 1A25C6358DB91342AA51720A5038B72742732498 at 128.31.0.39:9201)

I have set the system time correctly. Could it be that I need to expose some specific ports in my container? I have tried requesting some obfs4 bridges but they seem to all timeout with general SOCKS server failure as well.

TOR while rdp session? TOR while rdp session?

So I have a little Linux system at home which I use to play around a bit. Since I don’t use it regularly it is only connected to the powergrid and the Ethernet. I use it over ssh or xrdp depending on what I need.

Recently I thought of trying out TOR. After setting everything up my xrdp session instantly dies when opening TOR.

I only access the Maschine locally over say 192.168.178.42 and not over the internet and stuff.

But still the tunnel from TOR seems to kick me out everytime.

Any idea on how to prevent that?

Edit: after reinstalling xrdp and rebooting everything it worked. Guess I killed one of the services somehow ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Can a onion site owner/Hacker see my info? Can a onion site owner/Hacker see my info?

So, I was browsing Tor for the first time in years and I'm pretty sure I clicked on a site compromised(Drugs) as it was different, there I clicked on a link even if it looked strange and the next image I see is one telling me that I'm screwed and the "feds" will get me or something like that. Could it be true? I don't think the site would be illegal in my country anyway.

I used Onion on the highest level of security and a VPN.
