Question: FASA Star Trek Starship Combat Simulator 'Shields'

I have read through the rules and I am trying to understand how the shields work. To me it just isnt crystal clear.

Example: For the NCC-1701 Mk III states that 'Maximum Shield Power' is 16 with a 'Shield Point Ratio' is 1/2.

Does this mean if I assign 8 points of Energy to power the shields that all 6 sides of the ship will have a Shield Strength of 16 or only One of Six sides will have a Shield Strength of 16?

This is a subreddit for news and discussion of Old School Renaissance topics. We primarily focus on D&D (LBB, 1st ed. AD&D, etc.) and the retroclones. Other Old School games (Traveller, Runequest, Tunnels & Trolls, et al) are of course open for discussion. This is *not* a place to rant about how (your least favorite edition) sucks! In fact, I hope discussion arises about how later editions do things right, and how to incorporate them into OSR-styled games.

I'm an experienced GM in over 30 different rpg systems. The game I'm putting together for is FASA's old Star Trek rpg. The game will take place either during the Four Year War between the Klingons and the Federation or after it during Captain Pike's command of the Enterprise. According to FASA Trek, the Four Years War occurs between April 1, 2194 and June 13, 2198. Captain Pike commanded the Enterprise from June 2195 to April 2207.

For reference, Captain Kirk's voyages in The Original Series and The Animated Series occurs between April 2207 and March 2211. The Original Series movies take place between February 26, 2217 to September 2, 2229.

The players will assume the roles of the bridge crew of USS Invincible (NCC-1871) an Anton-Class Cruiser. They will also have secondary characters for when the party needs to split for away team missions. These secondary characters will be of lower rank for the various specialties needed. Characters will be created as a group session. It is encouraged that the characters have knowledge about each other before they board the USS Invincible.

The positions are the following: Captain, First Officer (Doubles as a Department Head), Chief Science Officer, Chief Medical Officer, Chief Communications Officer, Chief Helmsman, Chief Navigator, Security Chief, and Chief Engineer.

For those not familiar with The Original Series, it's basically about exploration with some combat as a last resort. It has a tone similar to that of the old westerns and is very character driven. Technobabble barely existed as the explanations were rather straight foward on why equipment can't be used etc...

The day and time for the game can be agreed upon by the players. I'm looking for only serious players that are willing to commit their time to a lengthy campaign.

I do have a Discord server set up for the group to use. If people have Tabletop Simulator we can use that as well.

EDIT: Discord link added.

EDIT 2: Game day and time is Saturday evenings PST which is GMT-8.

EDIT 3: All positions full and game is closed for now.

Due to the demand from European players, I've added a game just for them.

Rescuing old Ral Partha/FASA era minis?

So, like many, I've recently been bit by the BattleTech bug. Because of this, and the fact that I enjoy having disposable income, I've been poking around eBay to see what old minis are available. I've noticed two big things.

One, there's a surprising amount of old BT minis for very cheap on eBay. Including Unseen for... more than CGL charges for their minis, by a hair, but nowhere near as much as I was expecting Unseen to cost.

Two, most of them are pre-painted, and, uh... to be as polite as I can, Carolus Linnaeus would classify the paint work on most of these minis as "shitty." Some of them are acceptable-ish, but then you have this fucking thing and stuff on a similar level of quality.

I am thus at an impasse, because I wanna grab some cool stuff, but holy smokes are these minis gonna need some TLC.

Do the generally-accepted techniques for rescuing minis that you'd use for, say, Warhammer work for the old Ral Partha BT minis? If so, will the age of the plastic matter at all, or am I pretty much good to isopropyl/Simple Green a Shadow Hawk that's older than I am for repainting without risking it dissolving into grey sludge?

FASA and Washington

Something I've always wondered and maybe some of you might know, but what was FASA's particular fixation over Washington state about? From what I understand the founders were from Chicago, but in Shadowrun especially, and also Battletech (the Star League capital was near Puget Sound) Washington was like the center of the universe.

Any real world reasons or did they just think the pacific northwest was cool or something?

  • For fans of the 3rd edition and earlier Shadowrun games and background, including those who want to use other systems (including modern Shadowrun systems) to model the ethos and gameplay of FASA era classic Shadowrun. Identifying elements of the Old School that Shadowrun players wanted to invest their more modern Shadowrun games with might be an interesting source of discussion as well. members
