I've just read The Hobbit for the first time, and I've just got to say...

It is immediately obvious why Gandalf can't just get the eagles to take the ring to Mordor. Like, immediately obvious. In the first paragraph that the eagles are spoken of, it's immediately made extremely clear. Before Tolkien even came up with the whole story of the ring and the journey and all that, it is laid out in plain text why the eagles won't take the ring to Mordor.

They're a bunch of assholes. That's it. That's the whole reason. They're self-serving assholes. And good on them - I wouldn't fly a bloody hobbit to bloody Mordor either if I was an eagle. What's it to do with me?

Seriously, I'm 34 and I'm just reading (well, listening to) The Hobbit/Lord of the Rings for the first time, having only seen the theatrical releases of the LotR films before. But I've seen all the debate and memes about the eagles, and just like, it's not even a thing, at all? There's no plot hole there, Tolkien spells it out in plain English.

ALSO, I've heard a lot about how LotR relates to Tolkien's experiences in World War 2, and whether or not he was influenced by it. But when I started Fellowship of the Ring, I definitely didn't expect a detailed foreword from Tolkien in which he lays out the fact that he came up with the story before the war happened, and specifically rejects the idea that he was writing an allegory, and finds it offensive to suggest otherwise. Like, there's no 'death of the author' argument here, people who push that narrative are just disrespectful.
