John Oliver went from a small-time comedian in England to a superstar in the US. It's crazy and I'm happy for him.

[–]BoringWozniak 332 points333 points  (45 children)

I don’t think he’s particularly well known in the UK even

[–]The_Pelican1245 608 points609 points  (6 children)

“And now onto the UK, where I’m fondly know as ‘Who?’.”

[–]BoringWozniak 156 points157 points  (3 children)

“You’ve no idea how true that is”

[–]Grumplogic 77 points78 points  (2 children)

"I keep telling people I'm not Danielle Radcliffe's father!"

[–]Christmas_Queef 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I'm here for gender swapped Radcliffe.

[–]skeyer[🍰] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

according to mock the week, he's a "swarthy greek lady"

[–]azraelce 131 points132 points  (15 children)

He was on a couple panel shows but that's it really. Really found his place in the states.

[–]FotographicFrenchFry 98 points99 points  (3 children)

Yeah he was a pretty consistent presence on earlier Mock the Week, and he would come on Russell Howard's show a couple times.

Though I really wish I could've seen him on Would I Lie to You.

[–]darthjoey91 67 points68 points  (9 children)

I get that he's very American now, but I would love if he was on a season of Taskmaster, or like one of their New Year's specials.

[–]ljfoggy11 29 points30 points  (0 children)

He was in Alex Horne’s Sitcom via webcam pretty consistently where he was played up as being throughly unpopular despite his big Stateside success.

[–]redfricker 9 points10 points  (6 children)

he actually would've been a delightful taskmaster for a better US version

[–]MrFlow 46 points47 points  (4 children)

The same with Flula Borg, he's basically unknown in Germany, his success only started when he began to make comedy in english and humorously explaining german culture to people.

[–]Cirenione 8 points9 points  (2 children)

Yeah, first stumbled upon him over some Conan clips. He is basically just playing a German stereotype to a US crowd as he found success that way. Really can't stand him.

[–]oltronn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I mean, that seems reductivel to me. I am not read up on German stereotypes but fula seems to be pretty far from what I would imagine a German would act like.

[–]Coraxxx 20 points21 points  (1 child)

That rather depends. The type of people who read Private Eye and listen to BBC Radio 4 were quite familiar with him. The podcast he started with Andy Sulzmann (sp?) - The Bugle - was extremely popular, and has continued to be pretty well listened to even once he moved on.

[–]downdown-baby 9 points10 points  (0 children)

He still comes on the show as a guest from time to time, like their 2020 finale!

also — Zaltzman* :)

[–]mortalcoil1 74 points75 points  (8 children)

Because in the UK they love taking the piss out of people and they hate how friendly Americans are.

John Oliver is like a 4 on taking the piss out of and like a 6 on friendliness.

However, taking the piss out of people in America is considered exotic, but Americans generally don't like it when you take the piss out of people in a mean sort of way, as British people tend to do and prefer.

John Oliver was the correct mix of friendly and taking the piss out of at the right time that America needed.

Before you blow up my inbox, I am well aware that there are exceptions. I am well aware that this isn't 100% perfectly accurate. This is more of a "vibe check" about what British and US audiences prefer.

[–]Good_old_Marshmallow 55 points56 points  (3 children)

That’s such a great descriptor. John does bring a balance where he is way more willing to be an a-hole than most US celebrities but not so much that he is actually off putting to people

[–]googlyeyes93 18 points19 points  (0 children)

John figures out how to be an asshole in creative ways and that’s the difference lol

[–]mortalcoil1 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Thanks. It felt right. I'm glad people appreciate my enunciation of John Oliver's delicate balance that appeals to American viewers.

My comment was originally getting some downvotes, which, whatever, I don't give a fuck about internet points, but I felt I had really nailed John Oliver's likeability in America but started doubting my own views.

[–]sciamatic 37 points38 points  (3 children)

and they hate how friendly Americans are

I'm a UK/US dual citizen and this is the opposite of the truth.

The UK LOVES how friendly Americans are. Brits frequently make reference to how much nicer Americans are and how they think other Brits suck because they're not nice(they are, in fact, quite nice, just not as gregarious, but Brits love being self-effacing). Genuinely, the British admire how gregarious and outgoing Americans are. I really cannot state how incorrect this comment is, and I really, really don't want Americans to read it and assume that it is true.

The real difference is that American comedy likes to have the comedian making fun of other people, but British comedians want to be the butt of the joke. This is why panel shows work in the UK and not the US. American comedians want to look cool -- British comedians want to look like losers.

American panel shows end up being a bunch of people trying to compete for who can be cooler than who, which just doesn't work, while British panel shows are all people trying to set up great "fall guy" jokes for each other, and people diving in front of the sword of comedy. Everyone wants to be the buffoon, which is very entertaining and endearing.

Here is Steven Fry talking about it far more eloquently than I.

[–]mortalcoil1 8 points9 points  (1 child)

Ok. I completed misworded my intention.

They like friendly Americans, but how do they feel about friendly British comedians?

It's like, you know how when the cute foreign exchange student mispronounces the word aluminum? but then your girlfriend does it and it's annoying as fuck?

British people love friendly Americans. I fucked up on that line. Granted, but I assume they don't like friendly British comedians?

[–]FellateFoxes 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah he's mostly known for the (excellent) Bugle podcast, which has now had more years without him than with him.

[–]pancakebatter01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well I guess that’s alright considering most of his show revolves around American problems and politics. As much as maga type assholes would hate this guy, he’s really proud to be an American citizen. Obviously knows more about our history and American politics than most Americans as well.

[–]Noodle-Works 61 points62 points  (8 children)

Is he the world's most successful bird?

[–]LoneRangersBand 36 points37 points  (2 children)

Would say Dee, but you said successful.

[–]Bonepanther 7 points8 points  (0 children)

She almost made it on Conan

[–]Pyr0technician 18 points19 points  (0 children)

No, that would he Cher.

[–]renegadecanuck 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I think that award goes to the Puteketeke.

[–]TheGhostOfBabyOscarThe Expanse 28 points29 points  (1 child)

I believe the most succesful bird is actually the pūteketeke. Been recently named Bird of the Century, no less. Look it up.

[–]unlessyouhaveherpes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pooooteketeke

[–]AsSubtleAsABrick 8 points9 points  (0 children)

He isn't even bird of the century.

[–]LocoCoyote 40 points41 points  (9 children)

I knew him from “The Bugle” podcast. He was brilliant.

[–]Hollow_RantReview 25 points26 points  (3 children)

Audio newspaper for a visual world.

[–]Run_nerd 8 points9 points  (2 children)

Me too! I loved that podcast.

[–]drcorndog 17 points18 points  (1 child)

I feel honor-bound, then, to inform you and any other interested redditors that the Bugle is alive and well and ad-free! The rotating cast of co-hosts are excellent and Andy is still Andy, which is to say, hilarious, brilliant and out there.

[–]Jaxonian 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Ian Duncan has really come far from a small Community college professor

[–]TheG8Uniter 18 points19 points  (2 children)

He did a charity show for a High School program I was in way back in like 07/08. Got a signed autograph poster but never bothered to save it cause kid me thought "It's not like he'll ever get famous." Damn you younger me, damn you!

[–]Virtual_Plantain_707 19 points20 points  (1 child)

If you tell him, he’d probably send you another one.

[–]BreathExact 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed.

[–]mortalcoil1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Last I heard he fled to America and assumed a new identity due to a bad relationship.

[–]Creamofwheatski 14 points15 points  (1 child)

Yeah but we love him cause he put in the work. His success was not handed to him. Last week tonight is an incredible show that does a great public service educating people about the ills of the world in a hilarious way, and he was hilarious before that on the daily show and community as well.

[–]azraelce 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I totally agree!

[–]Healthy_Run193 3 points4 points  (0 children)

He’s not a superstar in either places.

[–]Kevin-W 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He’s definitely the person we’ll need next year for sure!

[–]Sam-Lowry27B-6 444 points445 points  (2 children)

Business daddy likes.

[–]TheLonelySnail 28 points29 points  (1 child)

Business Daddy is going to have to pay for a new volcano, or a giant finger to push a giant button or…

But it’s all worth it, isn’t it Mr. Nutterbutter? 🐿️

[–]ChiefQuimbyMessage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d like to bring back the tiger mascot for another “We got him!” segment.

[–]themakeshfitman 854 points855 points  (82 children)

The true spiritual successor to Jon Stewart. We love you, John

[–]SocraticIgnoramus 440 points441 points  (51 children)

Jon Stewart actually commented on a very similar statement a few years ago where he tips his hat to John Oliver’s unique ability to make somewhat long-winded introductions to topics more palatable than the Daily Show ever really tried to do and talks about how this really gives Last Week Tonight a greater range and depth than what Stewart saw himself as being able to pull off at the Daily Show. Jon Stewart said that the earlier seasons of the Daily Show were more pop culture and puff pieces because it took him some time to get the executives at Comedy Central to see the show’s potential for actually delving into the news of the day, and even then they were concerned it would impact ratings and ads. Stewart really built something amazing with that show, but he’s very hesitant to take too much credit for it without acknowledging the wonderful team he had.

[–]yabog8 240 points241 points  (35 children)

It also helps having the show weekly rather than daily. Really lets them research a topic

[–]SocraticIgnoramus 91 points92 points  (17 children)

Very true. I’m also quite pleased that Last Week Tonight is where Daniel O’Brien from Cracked landed after Cracked came under new ownership and purged a lot of the awesome writers that started on that platform. The writers who came up through that website were all absolutely amazing and have really all gone into careers of generating wonderful media. Some More News on YouTube is by another Cracked alum, Cody Johnston, and is in the same vein as Last Week Tonight, and definitely worth following. Robert Evans also does some amazing podcasts and has, in the past, done some actual journalism in war zones for Bellingcat.

[–]darthjoey91 34 points35 points  (3 children)

Yeah, but I don't think Warmbo gives Cody health benefits.

[–]trainercatladyAgents of S.H.I.E.L.D. 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I don't know that Warmbo gives Cody anything but nightmares and rashes.

[–]Pokii 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I’m pretty sure he’s the opposite of a health benefit

[–][deleted] 14 points15 points  (4 children)

I just got into Some More News last week. Very gripping journalism.

I wonder which network or cable news studio will try for their own TDS- or LWT-style show during primetime. CNN broke a million viewers during primetime but that was only during Trump's presidency / covid, and are not back down to half a million, which isn't a lot. Adding Roy Wood, Jr., or another TDS correspondent, or LWT writer would do well for them.

[–]SocraticIgnoramus 14 points15 points  (1 child)

The fact that they passed up Roy Wood Jr really irks me; he is absolutely the best choice! I hope he lands somewhere else doing his own version of TDS/LWT.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

His two stand-up specials are terrific if you haven't seen them.

[–]Kevin-W 11 points12 points  (1 child)

Love Some More News! Cody Johnson really does a great job!

[–]SpaghetiJesus 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I don’t think there could’ve been a better passing of the torch from Josh Gondelman to Daniel O’Brien as Senior Writer on the staff. Gondelman is definitely sillier than O’Brien as a writer, as Gondelman comes from a pure standup background, but O’Brien has a real sense for how combine pop-culture and news into one comedic but poignant bit. Couldn’t have been happier when O’Brien was hired on to the staff after the cracked meltdown that occurred.

[–]Cardholderdoe 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Soren Bowie has been a lead writer for American Dad for several seasons as well, always freaks me out to see his name at the start of the credits.

[–]JeffBurk 6 points7 points  (2 children)

Don't forget the Small Beans and Unpopular Opinion podcast networks that spun off from the Cracked implosion.

[–]SocraticIgnoramus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Or The Daily Zeitgeist with Jack O’Brien and Miles Grey* (not Cracked alum but an adopted member of the family), Secretly Incredibly Fascinating with Alex Schmidt, and whatever Jamie Loftus or Jason Pargin are up to - both awesome but I tend to only hear them as guests on other podcasts, even though Jamie Loftus has some shows of her own.

[–]kingofcrob 2 points3 points  (0 children)

found small beans to be very hit n miss so haven't watch anything they do in a while

[–]Azalus1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What a mention on O'Brien. I haven't thought about his articles in years but now that you mention him I remember reading countless articles of his years ago. I've always enjoyed last week tonight and to hear that he's a writer is not surprising.

[–]sycamotree 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Man I read so much cracked back in the day. Every day

[–]From_Deep_SpaceTwin Peaks 26 points27 points  (5 children)

Yeah it's like long-form version of the Daily Show

[–]exaviyur 30 points31 points  (4 children)

I'm loathe to compare them. The Daily Show had correspondents doing bits, interviews with politicians and celebrities, and extended monologues, but even those extended monologues were short by comparison because of all the other stuff and commercial breaks. The Daily Show was more like a longer, more serious Weekend Update in a lot of ways. Last Week Tonight scraps the bits and the interviews and just hones in on the monologue, sticking with one focus (or really at least two per episode) instead of spreading around, and they tend to be (especially in early seasons) on more obscure topics or things that aren't necessarily dominating the news cycle, where The Daily Show was expressly interested in topical news. They're apples and oranges. Yeah, you can compare them since they're both fruit, but different enough that they don't need to be.

[–]jcrespo21 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Also seems like LWT doesn't really have a hard time limit. It looks like the shows this season are anywhere between 35-40 minutes, but I'm sure they could do a 50-60 minute show if needed, or even 30 minutes if they can't fill the time (which likely rarely happens). But the Daily Show was always 22 minutes plus the commercials, with a hard out at 11:30 for the Colbert Report.

I think once Noah took over and the 11:30 timeslot never had a successful replacement, the shows would them a little more flexibility with how long they could run, but never to the same degree of flexibility that HBO gives Oliver simply because they have a different model than Comedy Central.

[–]MumrikDK 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Really lets them research a topic

They run shows half the year if I'm seeing it right. That means they can go into a season with a bunch of less time sensitive stuff ready to go and then add episodes with whatever super current stuff pops off.

[–][deleted] 16 points17 points  (8 children)

LW is only possible because of the success of TDS--not even considering that Oliver would still be a nobody if Stewart hadn't offered him a place to make his name in political satire. Business daddys learned that audiences were hungry for such things.

[–]SocraticIgnoramus 6 points7 points  (7 children)

I’m not convinced he’d be nowhere, but I take your point. This is definitely where he was always meant to be. He has some intangible It factor that I believe was always going to find success, but thank god for business daddy’s prescience.

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points  (6 children)

Poor phrasing on my part. Clearly he is talented enough with or without his current or previous platform to be successful.

But, as it happened, it was Stewart noticing whatever pre-TDS thing he was doing, and his ensuing success at field pieces and then guest hosting which propelled him to landing his own show.

Jon Stewart launched a thousand careers (and yes, this could be said about many, many people in showbiz).

[–]SocraticIgnoramus 2 points3 points  (2 children)

There’s also a British comedian named Russell Howard who’s had a couple of shows and some standup specials on Netflix who takes up similar topics, and he was one of John Oliver’s roommates before Oliver came across the pond, highly recommend Russ Howard if you haven’t come across him - he’s had John Oliver on his show but never the other way around.

[–]futuredrweknowdis 1 point2 points  (1 child)

“Thank you Jesus for bringing Russell… Sing!” Gets me every time.

I’ve loved John Oliver since the first time I saw him doing his Comedy Central stand up about a windmill penis incident, and Russell is one of my top favorite comedians, so learning that they were roommates makes my heart so happy.

The only downside to Russell’s comedy is that you really can’t quote most of his one-liners out of context without sounding really suspicious. “You could fuck a dog” just doesn’t sound right.

[–]SocraticIgnoramus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When Oliver appears on Howard’s show 5 years ago, there’s a whole bit about Howard’s stinky feet that I’m pretty sure goes back to their days as roomies, but Howard actually talked about the house they lived in together in another episode of his previous show when he’s speaking to a different roommate whose name I can’t currently recall but you’ve definitely seen him in movies. Apparently there were about 4 people rooming together at one point and all of them went on to make a name for themselves. How wonderful it would have been to be a fly on the wall when those dudes were hanging out smoking weed together back in the day.

[–]jai_kasavin 1 point2 points  (2 children)

John Oliver in 2007 started a political satire podcast called The Bugle which is still going. He is exceedingly good at political satire in my opinion, I love that podcast

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I'll look it up!

[–]jai_kasavin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only thing that changed between The Bugle and Last Week Tonight is the adding of the types of jokes and thirst for men that Janice from work would chime in with. This is the writers room effect for better or worse I'm not complaining.

[–]sitspinwin 3 points4 points  (1 child)

It’s the accent.

[–]WirelessBCupSupport 1 point2 points  (1 child)

How do you feel about his latest show, well, now that PRC-backed Apple censored his want to report on China...and so he left AppleTV+....?

[–]Flat_News_2000 8 points9 points  (0 children)

He really is. I'm glad someone is out there doing stuff like this.

[–]thebearjew007[🍰] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This couldn’t be more accurate

[–]Primetime22 4 points5 points  (5 children)

Comedy Central should have thrown the bag at him when they had the chance.

[–]themakeshfitman 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Part of me wishes they had but also I realize that Paramount would never have let him get away with most anything he gets away with now. The Daily Show wouldn’t have ushered the majestic puteketeke to victory. It wouldn’t have bought Russel Crowe’s jock strap

[–]Darkhallows27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The passing of the Jon torch

[–]Boggie135Bob's Burgers 60 points61 points  (2 children)

Puteketeke approves

[–]dekiruzooo 171 points172 points  (9 children)

Renew me harder, business daddy!

[–]Boggie135Bob's Burgers 27 points28 points  (7 children)

Business Daddy likes it rough

[–]rigobueno 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dang now I want Business Daddy

[–]TheFilthWiz 42 points43 points  (3 children)

Watch him weekly in Australia, gives me just enough of the political US landscape and he's been on a real tear this season. The NZ bird contest was amazing and you could see he was genuinely overjoyed when they won. He should do more stuff this side of the world, there's a nice little venn diagram where our collective sense of humour meets.

[–]smurfsundermybed 4 points5 points  (0 children)

He's responsible for your koala chlamydia clinic! How much more do you want from the man?

[–]426763 259 points260 points  (6 children)

Adam Driver does not like this post.

[–]unfunfununf 62 points63 points  (0 children)

Yeah he's a toe snapping, unwashed buffalo, what does he know?

[–]Quetzalcoatl490 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Slap a restraining order on me, you forlorn block

[–]flamingdonkey 34 points35 points  (3 children)

Leonard likes this post.

[–]auart 19 points20 points  (2 children)

Shut up, Leonard! I found your YouTube page; what's the point of reviewing frozen pizza?

[–]flamingdonkey 14 points15 points  (1 child)

You're talking about it.

[–]OneSidedPolygon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Shut up Leonard, nobody knows what you're talking about! I did eat all the macaroni, it's weird that he knows.

I love this because it's the only time Jeff has admitted to eating carbs.

[–]tecphileGame of Thrones 300 points301 points  (40 children)

The fact that Oliver must be making a fortune by now (stars get paid more the longer a show goes on) and yet WBD still gave his show a 3 season renewal shows just how much of a ratings hit Last Week Tonight continues to be.

And I'll admit, it's one of the few shows that literally everyone with a Max subscription watches.

[–]ELB2001 180 points181 points  (22 children)

The rather low cost also helps. Studio, research team and lawyers

[–]Transformah 133 points134 points  (16 children)

Don’t forget the props and pyrotechnics!

[–]ELB2001 57 points58 points  (10 children)

And the dancers

[–]hadronwulf 41 points42 points  (9 children)

And the jock straps.

[–][deleted] 42 points43 points  (7 children)

And the medical debt they bought.

[–]exaviyur 46 points47 points  (1 child)

Yeah, but their church more than pays for all of this.

[–]mdavis360 15 points16 points  (0 children)

praise be

[–]AngryVirginian 17 points18 points  (2 children)

And the billboard in Manitowoc, Wisconsin.

[–]lurkinglurkerwholurk 4 points5 points  (1 child)

And the waste facility in his name.

[–]mdavis360 1 point2 points  (1 child)

And the teeth they bought.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"Because of course we didn't!"

[–]Gil_Demoono 30 points31 points  (1 child)

And whatever nonsense John wants to buy off the Internet (except human teeth)

[–]AVeryHeavyBurtation 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Hey that reminds me, remember when he bought the search/browsing data of congress? I wonder what happened with that.

[–]wodon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I imagine it's a lot of very stressed lawyers who begin every meeting with "Oh god what have you done now?"

[–]Kazewatch 88 points89 points  (8 children)

It’s crazy considering they still put out the main story out on YouTube for free.

[–]ssm316 66 points67 points  (5 children)

They get ad revenue from people who wouldn't subscribe anyways. Its a win win.

[–]rucksacksepp 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Or can't. I'm German, there's no other way for me to watch it legally

[–]NicCage4life 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's pretty much an ad for HBO to get more people to sign up.

[–]thefilmer 16 points17 points  (1 child)

the rest of the show is more than worth it. the whole bird of the century saga had me in tears

[–]mdavis360 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Seriously. All that silly stuff is such a good palette cleanser after the onslaught of depressing deep dives they do. I love all the silly stuff like the bird of the century, Mr. Nutter Butter, Rat Erotica and washed up creepy baby dolls.

[–]Docphilsman 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I would bet that it's probably their most profitable current show.

The cost is relatively low compared to their big dramatic tentpoles. It's a studio show so no expensive sets and they really only have to pay him and the research/writing staff outside of the crew. Even when they do a big, expensive, silly project like the bird of the year advertising, it's usually in the realm of tens of thousands of dollars, not millions. Look at something like GOT that was spending close to $10million an episode, LWT costs pennies in comparison

They get amazing reach with that budget, and on top of their HBO audience they get millions of YouTube views every episode.

[–]StrngBrew 8 points9 points  (0 children)

These weekly news discussion shows seem to do well for them. When they’re new, both Oliver and Bill Maher are always among the top 10 most watched on Max.

Add on that they’re probably comparatively cheap to produce and it’s probably an easy call.

[–]Whatisinthepinkbox 17 points18 points  (1 child)

I’ll be honest and state I keep my subscription on just for him!

[–]teacherman0351 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Venture out of your like-minded circle of friends. The idea that "literally everyone with a Max subscription" watches that show is hilarious.

[–]mc_hammerandsickle 58 points59 points  (2 children)

i remember when Professor Duncan taught the principle of patience based psychological torture

[–]AcoupleofIrishfolk 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I remember when Michael Bolton told me why the U.S needs the IRS

[–]MissDiem 47 points48 points  (0 children)

With the waves of cancelations it's nice to see a bit of good news, with some longer term commitment.

[–]ICPosse8 156 points157 points  (12 children)

That puteckitecki shit was funny af, ngl

[–]drdr3ad 61 points62 points  (0 children)

puteckitecki

For as many times they had a segment about it, you really butchered that spelling lol.

Pūteketeke

[–]JMJ05 48 points49 points  (4 children)

Putting up billboards in major cities worldwide like, Paris, Tokyo, London, Mumbai, and Manitowoc WI.

[–]ICPosse8 41 points42 points  (2 children)

The one in London was fucking hilarious, “Coronate a Real King” or some shit 😂😂😂

[–]hirsutesuit 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Can I offer you a mint?

[–]lordatlasSpartacus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The one in London was fucking halitosis

Is your autocorrect drunk?

[–]Das-P 4 points5 points  (2 children)

Wait, what episode/segment/bit are you referring to? I'd like to check it out on YT.

[–]Rigumaro 1 point2 points  (1 child)

That was from the post-main-segment part of the episodes. It's not on youtube. Only in the full episodes on HBO.

[–]ColdStainlessNail 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can buy just a John Oliver metal cutout from metalbird.com for $20 plus shipping. First Christmas gift I bought for anyone.

[–]cope525 20 points21 points  (2 children)

I think the best thing they do is release the main story on Youtube the next day. It gets his message out to wider audience and possibly could get some people to join HBO. You know, the first hit is free....

[–]scarves_and_miracles 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I mean, I guess every hit is free, if they do this every week ...

[–]cope525 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah but they don’t have the rest of the show, just the main story. Which is enough for most.

[–]koivu4pm 43 points44 points  (1 child)

Praise be!

I feel like Danny McBride saw that and immediately called John Goodman.

[–]Particular_Battle_63 10 points11 points  (2 children)

I bet AT&T is just thrilled lol

[–]Pokii 16 points17 points  (1 child)

They would be, but they still haven’t heard the news because they’ve been unable to maintain a signal all day.

[–]TheLonelySnail 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Oh! Do you like that business daddy?

[–]BuzzBadpants 106 points107 points  (33 children)

I love his show and I don’t even particularly care for his comedy. It’s incredibly informative, and is probably the most unabashedly left-wing content available on a television.

[–]f-150Coyotev8 34 points35 points  (5 children)

This may be an unpopular opinion but to be honest I thought he was funnier than John Stewart when he subbed in for him along time ago, and I love Stewart

[–]mmbc168 12 points13 points  (0 children)

“DANGER!”

[–]Protean_Protein 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Jon was never very funny. He was a middling standup. His MTV show was “cool”, but not huge. He really only managed to become a phenomenon after 9/11, and he’s right to credit the people around him for a lot of that success. He was absolutely the right person for that gig.

[–]violue 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I'll be there, Johnnycakes.

[–]MichaelNearaday 32 points33 points  (1 child)

I remember when I saw my first episode and thought "What a great show! It's a shame it's his last week".

I'm not always a smart person.

[–]Big-Routine222 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Adam Driver is fuming right now.

[–]slartibartjars 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Never, ever look at his thumbs, once you see it, you cannot unsee it.

[–]Vapor_Screams 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I obsessed over this during 2020/2021

[–]firedrakes 3 points4 points  (0 children)

3 more season to lust over the oak that is Adam Driver(john says)

[–]KingStreetCleaner 3 points4 points  (0 children)

hahaha I opened this up just to say Puteketeke!

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (9 children)

I've largely outgrown the show's humor but i watch every episode. i'm not gonna pretend it's a defacto source of all one needs to know on a topic but i've never walked away from an episode feeling like i don't know the topic...at least a bit more than i did.

[–]Miracl3Work3r 32 points33 points  (42 children)

I can always count on John Oliver and Team to deliver the best deep dives on issues I never knew existed, to remind all of us of how fucking broken everything really is, and how fucked we all are.

God Bless you J

[–]renegadecanuck 26 points27 points  (1 child)

What I really love is that he doesn't stop at "everything is fucked". He always tries to end on "here's what people are doing to fight this, and here's how you can help".

[–]Senninha27 7 points8 points  (0 children)

To me, that is SO important. Give me an action item, dammit! Otherwise, I just feel helpless.

[–]ICPosse8 9 points10 points  (39 children)

It’s crazy, the dudes got 300+ episodes all covering a different topic, and I always feel waaay more informed on something after watching. Then when he memes the news, in between breaks, shit is too funny.

[–]FotographicFrenchFry 12 points13 points  (1 child)

I have never missed an episode of this show since the premiere. I felt lost during the strike, as my weekend doesn't feel properly complete until I watch John explain something sad with jokes. Seriously, one of the most well-researched and well-produced late night shows out there.

[–]jax362 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Welcome, welcome, welcome!

[–]Walks_with_Chaos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Awesome! Love this show

[–]fluffhead42O 2 points3 points  (0 children)

HELL YES

[–]CardiologistOwn5612 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Good. He is much better than Bill Maher. How many times do we have to hear woke is bad? Funny he now has a right wing following, as if prior years never happened?

[–]Kamikaze_VikingMWO 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sexy Rat & Puteketeke 100 years

[–]asusundevil12345 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Best news I’ve heard all ever.

[–]k4kkul4pio[🍰] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Excellent news!

It's become a bit of a tradition to watch Last Week Tonight on Monday evening after I get home, so I am delighted to know the show isn't going anywhere anytime soon.

Also, all hail Puteketeke, our new avian overlord! 🐦

[–]ILive2Drum 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I love his show particularly because he talks about topics people normally don’t talk about and he always gets me simultaneously saying “well… I never thought of it that way” while I’m also laughing my ass off with his jokes and matter-of-fact way of delivery.

A lot to like with this one. Congratulations, John!

[–]Noodle-Works 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Strike Force Five fans, where you at?

[–]Lokaji 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Current business daddy must like the ratings more than being shit on by the show.

[–]chocotripchip 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I hope that will still leave him some time for the Community movie.

[–]Sambo_the_Rambo 4 points5 points  (2 children)

I fucking love John Oliver, he’s the English John Stewart.

[–]PaleHorseWriter 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You’re god damn right it is…pūteketeke from Kentuckytucky (finger guns) bang bang!!

[–]Randy_Vigoda 11 points12 points  (3 children)

Nothing like having a corporate jackass telling you what to be mad about.

[–]Bowens1993 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Exactly why Reddit loves it.

[–]peon47 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good for Little Johnny Hollywood.

[–]brentus86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like John!

I usually make a point to watch each episode weekly, but sometimes I let it slide to build up a good batch to watch.

[–]Large_Desk_4193 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I’ve never seen this show but love reading Reddit news articles and such. Worth a watch?

[–]wjbc 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes! And the good news is that most of his shows from prior years are still relevant, because he does deep dives into subjects not normally covered by the daily news.

[–]FUMFVR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Business daddy loves him!

[–]zeromavs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hope he does every he can to get cancelled lmao

[–]OkScore3250 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This show is more informative than any "legit" news program out there. Save maybe those produced by public broadcasters. His segments are always very eye opening and a little troubling in what is revealed.

[–]BlahBlahBlahSmithee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A bright spot in the bleak MAX lineup.

[–]TuluRobertson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh well

[–]downtimeredditor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

HBO should consider grabbing The Problem with Jon Stewart.

It's not as detailed as LastWeekTonight, but invovles interviewing those political fuckwads.

[–]Majorkerina 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Wow I don't think I've heard of a renewal this long especially from Warner Bros.. Very cool. I have mixed thoughts about the show sometimes but it's awesome more than not.

[–]tabas123 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve been heavily disappointed by most political comedians at some point, even Jon Stewart, but Jon Oliver has been consistently solid on every single take I’ve seen from him. Even on Israel/Palestine he has had wonderfully nuanced coverage.

Thankful he’s sticking around at HBO!
