THE GUIDE: How To Setup Your N64 To Modern TV's

Quality Post

Because this question is asked at least once a week. Here is a guide on how to connect your N64 to a modern TV.

For new people, there is a difference between UPSCALE and STRETCHING. Zooming in on a photo makes it blurry, this is stretching the image to fit your screen. Upscale is doubling the picture on all sides, keeping the original resolution in tact.

Anyways let's connect those RED, YELLOW, and WHITE (composite) cables to HDMI.

The cheapest answer is composite to HDMI . But the quality is horrible, and only STRETCHES the picture to fit. Around $10 - $20. Would not reccomend.

The slightly better option is The Hyperkin Converter. This can stretch the picture to 16:9 (modern TV width) or 4:3. Around $25 - $30 I've personally used this, and it's good for the casual guy.

The most bang for your buck is The Retrotink 2X. This will upscale the image by 2X, can be stretched to 16:9 or 4:3, scanline for that classic CRT look, and has a smoothing option that really goes a long way making pixels disappear. This goes for $150. (I own this too and love it)

Beyond this, you can RGB mod your N64 (the European equivalent of S-video) and buy the Open Source Scan Converter combining these two is on par with the official HDMI mod. This costs about $400 in total and requires soldering skills.

And finally there's the HDMI Mod. You have to order these and they're made by one person. Rumor is they're going back in stock, but N64 veterans can tell you we've been waiting YEARS for them to come back. Again, this takes SERIOUS soldering skills and is the most expensive solution.

Hope this helps. If this makes veteran approval, cool beans. If someone makes a better post. That's cool too.
