Gerald at the final scene
false

The show is about showing how hard and perilous farming is, and Gerald has lived it for many decades. That likely means he’s helped feed hundreds of thousands of people.

Did anyone else get a bit misty hearing him talk about how he appreciated everyone’s support? We like to have a laugh at his speaking, but he’s the representative of the old guard of farming. He’s our guy.

Bless you, Gerald.

Two questions

First, is the role of a Land Agent basically how it’s depicted on the show? I am amazed by Charlie’s knowledge and versatility. How would a farmer manage without one? How could they ever wade through all the red tape?

Secondly, how did farmers check the moisture levels of their crop before the Andy little digital doodads on the show?

Thank you kindly in advance!

The door is shut find the window (synchronicity)

I really hope greg or dana reads this because this was an insane synchronicity and could help with the case to decipher the language that wriste uses. He may have had help sending them those emails, and the codes etc from government officials who use this kind of terminology, and want to expose whatevers going on. This video starts at a time stamp where this Ex-CIA agent is discussing accessing someones "secret life" basically what most people would just call their private life (example: things publicly unknown like their feet stink or that they dont eat certain foods cause it gives them gas dumb examples but those are what he gives.) I was listening to this guy and just kinda browsing the web, and I was thinking of when the next season of helliers gonna be and then I start hearing him talk about "windows vs doors" and my brain instantly clicked to wriste's words of "the door is shut find the window" in the video the guy says basically changing from a door to a window is essentially just changing how the conversation flows almost a change of subject. Coulda swore in that episode also was when the "subject changed" from being a specific location to being the town as a whole. We see that a lot in the series, when the conversation changes, and you even hear greg say at one point.

"Its almost like whatever it needs to be at that moment is what it turns into to keep you going down that path" aka keep the conversation flowing.

Anyway heres the video starting at timestamp and is just a quick little 3-4min segment but actually the entire video is great, also if youre down for a watch. https://youtu.be/QVVe2rCHtN0?si=sX1vCpZeRK3a97mL&t=4697

Seeking Guidance: My First Doc, Capturing Dakar's "Gravel Queens" (Direct Cinema, Tripod-Focused)

Salam everyone! My name is Hussein Dembel Sow, and I'm a 38-year-old filmmaker from Dakar, Senegal. I've always been captivated by stories that often go untold, the quiet struggles and triumphs that make up the fabric of a community. Now, I'm finally taking the leap to tell one of those stories – I'm making my first documentary.

The Story: The "Gravel Queens" of Dakar
Dakar is a city in perpetual motion, with construction booming everywhere you look. Amidst the dust and clamor, a group of remarkable women, the "Tisseuses de Pierres" (Gravel Queens), have carved out their own space. They collect and meticulously sort leftover construction materials – what others discard – transforming it into a source of income and quiet strength. This article offers a glimpse into their world: https://www.courrierinternational.com/article/reportage-dans-un-dakar-en-chantier-la-petite-entreprise-des-tamiseuses-de-pierres

My Vision - Direct Cinema, Reimagined:

  • Truth Through Observation: I'm drawn to the power of direct cinema, to let the reality of their lives unfold naturally without heavy narration or manipulation.

  • A Quieter Intimacy: However, I want to avoid the frenetic, handheld style often associated with direct cinema. I'm picturing a more composed approach, similar in spirit to "Some Kind of Heaven," where the camera, often on a tripod, observes with a quiet respect, allowing moments to breathe. I believe this will mirror the dignity of the women's labor.

Where I Need Your Wisdom:

  1. Finding My Visual Compass: Can you recommend documentaries that successfully marry direct cinema with a more considered, tripod-heavy approach? Films that showcase how to create visual interest without relying on constant camera movement?

  2. Gear for Dakar: I need advice on selecting a camera and lens kit. Key factors:

    • Image Quality: I'm aiming for a cinematic look, even with limited resources.

    • Low-Light Capabilities: Some scenes might take place in dimly lit areas.

    • Durability: Dakar's dusty environment demands gear that can handle tough conditions.

  3. Mastering the Tripod: What techniques can I employ to ensure my film is visually compelling while shooting primarily on a tripod? How can I use composition, framing, and subtle camera movements to create dynamism within stillness?

  4. Building Trust, Capturing Authenticity: The women I'll be filming are not actors. They are mothers, workers, individuals with their own stories. What advice do you have for a first-time filmmaker on gaining their trust and capturing authentic moments of their lives?

I'm incredibly passionate about sharing the stories of these resilient women. Any guidance you can offer would be immensely appreciated. I want to learn from your experiences and do this project justice.

Baax na lool! (Thank you in Wolof)

How do I know when new episodes are supposed to be out?

I'm getting tired of navigating discovery's Google TV app, which hasn't updated the "new episodes" section in at least a month. For a while there were roadkill garage episodes popping up weekly but now it seems even those have stopped.

I tried to look online for a schedule for the shows I watch on Motortrend but I don't see anywhere where it says when new episodes are expected.... Roadkill, Roadkill Garage, Hot Rod Garage, Super Street, Faster, and the show with VGG (I forget the name).

What are the questions I need to ask in an interview?

I am trying to make short documentary about an NGO trying transform a poor community. They offer education to the kids in the community and they also train women in entrepreneurship.

I have a script in mind but that's still armchair. I want to get to know the emotional impact the NGO had in their lives and also the gravity of their struggles everyday.

They are so welcoming and ready to answertmy questions but I have no idea about the questions I need to ask to capturee both the content and the emotions.

Documentary film makers, how do you go about framing questions for your interview and what are some tips to get the most out of them without wasting their time?
