It was not normal to leave young kids alone for days at a time in the 1980's. That's not latchkey parenting and never was.

This is something that as a Gen X'er has been driving me crazy as I see it constantly on here. The defense of John being that "well 'back then' that was really normal. Sam and Dean were latchkey kids"

OMG that is not what latchkey means and no...leaving young children completely alone for days at a time in skeezy motels was not considered normal or acceptable or even common. It was considered neglect and abuse. Just like it is now.

"Latchkey kids" refers to kids that were left alone for hours between school and evening when the parents would finally get home from work. It wasn't the parent leaving for days on end without adult supervision.

John would have been reported to social services and had them taken away if he had stayed in one place long enough for them to catch up with him. It's only because they constantly moved around that it didn't happen.

I was an extra on two episodes. AMA

Hi all, just found this sub. When living in Hawaii I had an opportunity to be an extra filming on LOST. I played a suited security guard in the Season 4 finale and a cop at the airport in Season 5 opener.
