Shōgun, set in feudal Japan, charts the collision of two ambitious men from different worlds and a mysterious female samurai: John Blackthorne, a risk-taking English sailor who ends up shipwrecked in Japan, a land whose unfamiliar culture will ultimately redefine him; Lord Toranaga, a shrewd, powerful daimyo, at odds with his own dangerous, political rivals; and Lady Mariko, a woman with invaluable skills but dishonorable family ties, who must prove her value and allegiance.

What pulled me in after the first episode was his bald honesty. Most of the time people glamorize themselves and lessen their role in whatever plight they found themselves in. His telling of the events was raw and almost painful in so many ways. I watched the whole series in one sitting, barely taking my eyes away. I’m proud of him and hope he’s proud of the end result. Fiona “Martha” would likely begin to heal if she did the same.

Yea, Donny is a deeply flawed human being who made bad decisions but that's life. Irl a lot of victims are not perfect angels. Very often people use the victim's flaws to say they deserved the abuse which is just not true. No matter what this guy did he clearly did not deserve to get harassed, molested and raped.
People say he's not likable. I thought that was the whole point. Many people irl are not likable and angelic, but messed up and self-destructive.

I’m an almost 30 year old man, who was routinely SA’d as a child; and endured some other horrific traumas as well. Richard Gadds brutal honesty was a catharsis I didn’t know I needed.
I am newly sober (just hit 9 months), and have been working hard on myself; but being sober for the first time in 15 years has brought up all of the memories that I worked so hard to suppress. I fell to the ground and tears watching the show, I thought it would just be another “You,” but nothing could’ve prepared me.
I’ve never related to another human being so much in my entire life and I’ve always felt that I was just broken. And because of this show for the first time, I feel like I’m not, and I feel less alone.
