I'm not an absolute hater on this topic, but I've noticed that I do feel very annoyed seeing 20 year old women rocking what I was wearing in middle school. This term has become increasingly popular in recent years. On the one hand, it's popularity might reflect a positive cultural shift towards mental health awareness and discussions about relationship abuse.
On the other hand...it's meaning seems to be totally diluted now due to constant misuse, as people now seem to drop this word to describe any emotionally discomfort event.
If someone disagrees with you and insists they're correct, they're not "gaslighting" you -- this is called an argument
If someone remembers an event differently than you do, that doesn't mean they're gaslighting you. People remember things differently sometimes.
Lying is bad, but just because someone has lied to you doesn't mean they're gaslighting you. Deception and gaslighting aren't the same thing.
Gaslighting requires a consistent pattern of intentionally deceptive behavior that aims to make the victim question their sanity and doubt their reality. It's a severe form of deliberate and sustained psychological manipulation.
Note: This should be obvious but... the post title is intentionally hyperbolic. The intent of this post is not to claim gaslighting doesn't exist but to highlight that the recent cultural hijacking of this word only diminishes the seriousness of this term, which impacts genuine victims.

Generation X was born, by broadest definition, between 1961 and 1981, the greatest anti-child cycle in modern history. Nevertheless, we grew up to become the world's most devoted parents: the "workhorse of America." This sub welcomes links, photos, graphics, memoirs, commentaries, stories, etc., for and about Gen-Xers, the 13th Generation of Americans. GenX also translates to many other parts of the world.
Mine would be cigarette smoke and microwaved burritos. Not sure why Mom loved those so much, but that was dinner a lot. Sitting there eating that, in plumes of smoke, watching Facts of Life.... Good times.
