It depends what you are trying to build. If it is something like daily stats for which an API is available, I'd go with API. If you want historical data like BBallref provides, and there are no API's available, you have to scrape the website.

API's are easier to consume, scraper you have to do some extra work. Both are pretty easy to achieve if you know what you want to do. But ultimately it depends on the thing you want to build and what is available. Basically if nba restricts their API's for internal use only, all you can do is scrape the data off their website.

Web scraping, imo, should be considered at last. even a small change in the DOM structure can cause errors. On the other hand with API's are more reliable that ways.

Other API's were considered as well but there are not as many options we can choose from. The one I'm using right now is probably a little better than the other I looked at.

Because the API we were using for game threads, sidebars, topbars and pgt generator have stopped updating. So users were not able to post embedded stats. Driving traffic to ESPN would be the last reason to do that lol.

So, I made a patch to PGT generator and it is working for now. The minutes column is still a little fucked, but I will fix it soon. Hope it keeps on working for atleast this season. Also if a game not started, that page won't load on the pgt generator website, I need to add a error catch thingy, will do that soon as well

Post game threads are not automated. I don’t know if r/mavericks have some bot that posts pgt after game automatically. In r/nba the responsibility to post pgt falls on users and during post season it is done by mods.

It is not. It used to be the project few years ago but we moved to a private repo since then. You can use these bots scripts however you want, but they aren’t actively managed by us right now.

As for our current project, we had some discussions about making it open-source, but can’t promise when we will be able to actually make it open source.

I mean, you’ll have to find project for yourself. Like the tool for generating PGT. We also created one for handling flairs, one website for over under stuff.

You can work on multiple initiatives, but the reason for this bot only application was we really need bot only mods who can look after existing bots and write some new features. We will post mod applications for regular mods in future though if you want to apply there.
