Change Gmail notifications

You can choose how Gmail notifies you when you get new emails. The types of notifications you can customize depends on your device.

Turn Gmail notifications on or off

Step 1: Check your device notification settings

Important: To receive Gmail notifications, turn on device notifications.

  1. On your iPhone or iPad, go to your device's settings.
  2. Check your notification settings for Gmail.

Step 2: Check Gmail app notification settings

Important: If you have multiple accounts in the Gmail app, change the app notifications settings for each account.

  1. On your iPhone or iPad, open the Gmail app .
  2. At the top left, tap Menu and then Settings.
  3. Under "Notifications," tap Email notifications.
  4. Choose the types of email notifications you want to receive.
    • All new mail: Receive notifications for every email you receive.
    • Important section only: Receive notifications for email marked as important.
    • High priority only: Receive notifications for email that Gmail identifies as high priority.
    • None: Turn off notifications for emails you receive.
  5. At the top right, tap Done.

Change notification sounds

  1. On your iPhone or iPad, open the Gmail app .
  2. At the top left, tap Menu and then Settings.
  3. Under "Notifications," tap Email notifications or Chat notifications.
  4. Tap Notification sounds.
  5. Choose the notification sound you want to use.
  6. To turn off notification sounds, tap None.
  7. At the top right, tap Done.
