Biden imposes sanctions on Myanmar military leaders who directed coup
It's a good start. It's good that he's targetting the orchestrators of the coup and not the country itself.
Yeah, won’t cause change but at least it hurts those behind the coup.
I’m hoping the protest grow in Myanmar. That’s where the change can happen
It’s the best course of action the US can take. So much of this political conflict in Myanmar revolves around the kleptocracy and corruption of the Tatmadaw leadership. Specifically targeting them means that pro democratic elements in Myanmar aren’t hurt and left isolated. It’s also what was mentioned in an open letter by one of the best English language local media covering the protests.
Exactly, this way it allows us to facilitate unrest and respond with democracy more quickly.
I dont know if it's just me but It now seems weird to have a president using common sense
Except the orchestrators will tax / plunder more from common people reducing their life to even worse state because of those sanctions. So in the end it still affects mostly people who are already struggling with their life, not the elite. The government can easily control the narration that it's the West who's making their life worse and increase "patriotism" of the population as the result too.
Serious question, do these sanctions ever do anything?? I see these headlines all the time, US imposes sanctions on syria, myanmar, china, etc... like does this ever do shit besides make the other country angry?
Why don’t we have sanctions in China over the trash they do to their internment camp victims?
