I really love the grover casting and people are just not talking about it. I guess there isnt much controversy so there is no reason to

[–]DrStein1010 213 points214 points  (2 children)

The only part of Grover's human appearance that's really iconic or important is him being scrawny.

So long as the kid doesn't bulk up, there's no issue at all.

[–]Swordofmytriumph 80 points81 points  (0 children)

The only thing I remember about what he was supposed to look like was that he had acne, which was nice for my 13 year old self to read… the casting choice matches my mental picture of Grover exactly—my brain just makes stuff up lol.

[–]MrSonicOSG 56 points57 points  (0 children)

Halfway through s1 Aryan fucking hulks out, turns into the mountain

[–]daffyducktaffytuckChild of Apollo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

i dont mind a himbo grover or a more bulked up grover on aryan

[–]guessimonredditrn 125 points126 points  (1 child)

Lol did anyone see Aryan’s announcement on his Instagram “I am the GOAT!” I love it, he is indeed the goat 😂

While I was a little sad to lose the image I’ve had of Annabeth for over a decade and not sure what they’ll do with Magnus’s origin story if that gets adapted, I think it’s safe to say Rick would not have casted Walker, Leah, or Aryan if he didn’t think they could perfectly play his main trio

[–]clueless_claremont_Child of Hades 21 points22 points  (0 children)

oh my god. the goat.

[–]Leoram1217 240 points241 points  (0 children)

So true. Just like Grover gets sat upon by Rick in Heroes and only has a little bit of time to shine in Trials, we, too, sit on Grover.

Honestly, this meme is a breath of fresh air I didn't know I needed.

[–]the_wolf_who_laughs 101 points102 points  (5 children)

When the casting happened and I asked my friends about Grover and Annabeth, everyone agreed that Grover was cast perfectly and they could see it even though they argued about Annabeth

[–]Rainy212Child of Loki 416 points417 points  (10 children)

Honestly I’m surprised it’s not controversial, I’m super pissed that they’re using an actor with human legs instead of the canon goat ones

[–]Rudy1661 56 points57 points  (3 children)

What's next, the actor for Chiron won't even be a half-centaur? I have no hopes anymore

[–]acromantulusChild of Poseidon 43 points44 points  (1 child)

How can you be a half-centaur? I guess that'd make you a quarter-horse.

[–]Rudy1661 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I'd love to be a quarter-horse dude that'd be so cool

[–]Perseus-TheGreekHeroChild of Poseidon 22 points23 points  (0 children)

What's next, Festus won't be a real mechanical dragon? im done

[–]KrahnarchyChild of Hephaestus 93 points94 points  (0 children)

This 1000% times. I can't believe they are erasing satyr culture just to fill some quota

[–]ClassicalMusic4LifeChild of Apollo 53 points54 points  (0 children)

sameee it's so disappointing, can't believe they'd do that 🙄

[–]gabbyrose1010Child of Athena 41 points42 points  (0 children)

i cant believe they didnt just hire a satyr… like come on disney its not that hard 🙄

[–]raisinghellwithtrees 10 points11 points  (0 children)

No horns either.

[–]Zuko2008 14 points15 points  (1 child)

Wait till you find out that none of the monsters are real!

[–]Perseus-TheGreekHeroChild of Poseidon 20 points21 points  (0 children)

wait.... what?!

well no worries, at least the greek gods are real

[–]grindlebald 22 points23 points  (4 children)

Grover is the type of character which can be perfectly played by anybody. His skin color and personal features are only vaguely mentioned, and I feel like it’s an ok casting. Tbh I was thinking someone older, cuz Percy said that he looked like he’d been held back a few grades

[–]Impressive-Gift-4576 2 points3 points  (2 children)

He’s 16 to their 12/13.

[–]grindlebald 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Chiron said satyrs age half as fast and then said Grover was 28. He’s more like 14, almost 15ish

[–]Impressive-Gift-4576 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The actor dude. The actor.

[–]tjkatz11 145 points146 points  (1 child)

I can't find anything on the Annabeth actor, but Grover's actor is literally Grover. Just like Walker is Percy.

[–]gabbyrose1010Child of Athena 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Yeah, plus Rick said the two actors already have good chemistry.

[–]adboutChild of Demeter 126 points127 points  (17 children)

Yes! I love Grover’s casting. It’s also cool that he’s Indian not only because he’s a POC, but also because he’ll be subverting Indian stereotypes. In western media Indian characters are often caricatured as the nerdy/techy/smart characters. Grover is the complete opposite—not that he isn’t smart, but he’s more on the emotive and spiritual side of things.

[–]i_am_new_here_51 80 points81 points  (2 children)

Well the spiritual Indian is another stereotype if you think about it

[–]adboutChild of Demeter 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Yeah I guess so. But not nearly as common. And I think Grover is spiritual in a different way.

[–]stefan92293 10 points11 points  (0 children)

spiritual Indian

Which one?

Yes.

[–]FaizerLaserChild of Hades 37 points38 points  (1 child)

I mean yes that is the main stereotype that exists but brown actors often also get stereotyped into "super spiritual vegetarian" which Grover would fit.

[–]adboutChild of Demeter 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Ok yeah that’s true. I think that stereotype is just as often attributed to white actors though. Like, the hippie, chill, surfer-dude, blonde vegan white guy.

[–]grindlebald 9 points10 points  (0 children)

As an Indian, the opposite. He may not be nerdy, but he’s a scrawny weak Indian kid, who has to depend on his friends to protect him

[–]blubdubbadeedubHunter of Artemis 65 points66 points  (0 children)

I love Grovers casting, as an Indian myself ❤️

[–]TL_TRIBUNALChild of Loki 92 points93 points  (4 children)

The only thing I am saying is that I always pictured grover as non white and annabeth as white

[–]gabbyrose1010Child of Athena 36 points37 points  (2 children)

I thought Grover was ginger lmao

[–]SwirlyManager-11Child of Boreas 7 points8 points  (0 children)

So did official artists

[–]Elven_Prince_Child of Hades 12 points13 points  (0 children)

He is/was. Its just that he's never shown as such in almost every piece of fan art ive ran into and i have to actively look to find a book accurate piece

[–]grindlebald 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I always pictured Grover looking like how he did in the movie lol

[–]unicornchild15Child of Apollo 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I was so excited for Grover to be relevant again, but here we are. Honestly the poor boy deserves better.

[–]AsyanongAmbiguousSatyr 41 points42 points  (11 children)

Ngl, I really hoped that the Grover cast was gonna be a Black teen. However, I'm glad that he's at least Asian, will keep Frank company in the future installations lol.

So fucking excited for what the entire show has to offer!!!!!!!!!

[–]apark1121 17 points18 points  (10 children)

Apparently the actor is south Asian-Indian. So that’s very cool!

[–]AsyanongAmbiguousSatyr 73 points74 points  (7 children)

Yep, an Indian person is Asian, on their own.

A lot of people falsely assume that Asian people are only predominantly pale/have very light skin tone (East Asians: Chinese, Japanese, Korean).

But a lot of Asian people are also predominantly dark-skinned (Southeast Asians: Filipino, Indian, Thai, Vietnamese). It just depends on what type of Asian people are presented the most in the media.

So yeah, as a Southeast Asian myself, I'm glad to see someone like me on the show!!!!!!

[–]ClassicalMusic4LifeChild of Apollo 17 points18 points  (0 children)

fellow Southeast Asian here and I'm so glad to see him cast as Grover, really excited!!

[–]lesbianoid 13 points14 points  (0 children)

it’s always interesting that in the US “asian” is basically assumed to mean east asian (to the point where i’ve seen ppl try to “correct” people referring to south asian people as asian lol). because in the UK, “asian” is most commonly used to refer to south asian people

[–]TheKBMV 0 points1 point  (4 children)

You surprised me. I always thought filipinos were from Polynesia. Apparently I was off by a few kms.

[–]AsyanongAmbiguousSatyr 2 points3 points  (3 children)

Well you're not entirely wrong. According to my Grade 12 Society/History Teacher, Filipinos are descendants of Polynesian, Mongoloid, Aboriginal, & White people (mostly because our own Southeast Asian country, the Philippines, was colonized by White people for 300+ years).

Not so sure of what Indian people are descendants of. But they are still considered as Asians, just like Filipinos.

[–]OsariikChild of Poseidon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

North Indians have a common origin with Europeans (excepting Finland, Estonia, Hungary, the Basque Country and a few other minority peoples), at least on the linguistic side of things. South Indians have a separate origin.

[–]Padparadscha_LazuliChild of Hecate 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You used “Grade12” instead of “12th grade”. You really are a Filipino.

[–]kypler0 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Polynesians originated from Southeast Asia (Austronesians) and melanesia not the other way around. Pacific Islander ≠ Filipinos

https://www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/pnas.1518576112

[–]grindlebald 7 points8 points  (0 children)

India is in South Asia. An North Indian is a south Asian. Do you mean south East Asian?

[–]Shazam63Child of Poseidon 7 points8 points  (0 children)

what do you mean by south asian-indian. he is asian, he is also indian. he is not asian-indian

[–]im_bored345Child of Hades 39 points40 points  (5 children)

That's cause his casting was pretty good (in terms of looks) and his appearance is not mentioned as much in the books lol

[–]gabbyrose1010Child of Athena 13 points14 points  (3 children)

Plus Rick said him and Walker already have good chemistry which is a plus!

[–]Melancholy_girl3Child of Apollo 7 points8 points  (2 children)

Do you mean Walker?

[–]grindlebald 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Nah he means will solace

[–]gabbyrose1010Child of Athena 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shhhhhhhhhh

[–]rtlknd 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I’m extremely relieved they decided to keep the movie and musical tradition of casting an actor of color for Grover alive. Reading the PJ graphic novels now feels so odd with Grover being pictured as white. It just doesn’t feel like Grover. Gotta say, I’m really exited to see the actor who plays Grover on the big screen and taking his place among all the other AMAZING Grover actors

[–]PrinceSinatra14 3 points4 points  (0 children)

On the topic of character race in casting, my brother and I both read the lightning thief around the same time and we pictured Grover as different races. I thought of him as white and my brother always thought he was black. Just funny how characters can be visualized drastically different if there aren’t hyper specific descriptions of them.

[–]Starkiller56 12 points13 points  (1 child)

Honestly, this was sad. Grover should have been announced last week.

[–]gabbyrose1010Child of Athena 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I personally think everyone should have been announced together. Everyone being excited about Percy might have been able to distract them from Annabeth. They also could have announced Grover later but that woulda been kinda sad lmao.

[–]Loganjoh5Child of Ares 18 points19 points  (16 children)

It’s because it’s not that dividing of a casting choice

[–]rowan_damischChild of Nemesis 24 points25 points  (2 children)

Maybe people are more okay with a black Grover than a black Annabeth because Grover was already black in the movies?

[–]gabbyrose1010Child of Athena 32 points33 points  (1 child)

Yeah, plus he’s much more of a side character than Annabeth and many were never certain of his looks in the books because he was described a lot less (Percy’s huge crush on Annabeth certainly showed in his narrative lmao).

[–]WanderToNowhereClear Sighted Mortal 84 points85 points  (12 children)

Grover's appearance doesn't affect the narrative and other cast much compared to Annabeth's.

[–]BonzaM8Child of Athena 15 points16 points  (11 children)

How does Annabeth’s appearance affect the narrative in a way that changing her appearance would significantly alter the quality of the show more than any other character’s appearance?

[–]jabbergawky 45 points46 points  (2 children)

Right? It doesn't matter. Am I a shitty fan for not caring?

Actually I keep hearing she has to be blonde because it's important to Annabeth's character, that it makes her feel like she's underestimated due to 'dumb blonde' stereotypes. But I just don't find that realistic in 2022. You know who is constantly underestimated in today's world, more than anyone? Black girls. I think Leah's going to do great.

[–]Maxorus73Child of Athena 10 points11 points  (0 children)

People keeping saying that that's important to her character, but I just did a reread and I don't think the frustration about being blonde because of stereotypes is mentioned once. Maybe Rick said something in an interview? It feels like someone just made it up at some point and fans kept spouting it as truth because it's a way to complain about Annabeth not being blonde (like in Peter Johnson). Plus even if it is a canon part of her character, you are absolutely right that black women face similar if not even more extreme prejudices.

[–]BonzaM8Child of Athena 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only shitty fans here are the ones who think Annabeth can only be played by a white actress.

[–]WanderToNowhereClear Sighted Mortal 3 points4 points  (7 children)

Because in the book 1. Athena based her children's appearance with hers included all member of Athena Cabin. The best part is in Book 2. Annabeth will board The Confederate warship. The Confederate! I can't imagine how the scene will play out tho.

[–]ken-der-guru 7 points8 points  (5 children)

I didn’t thought about the Confederate Warship. That could be interesting.

I don’t remember the scene in the book fully. Where the dead soldiers able to think and what were the reaction about the three in the book?

[–]amusedsithChild of Athena 8 points9 points  (4 children)

Yes they could think, it was small but they were confused by Annabeth because she was from Virginia (originally) but wore a Yankees cap. So the dislike/confusion would likely remain since she's black now. I wouldn't be surprised if the fact that it's a confederate ship is removed though

[–]Maxorus73Child of Athena 10 points11 points  (2 children)

Actually you're mixing up two reactions. They like Annabeth period because she's from Virginia, they probably didn't even see the cap. They initially like Percy because his last name is Jackson, but didn't like him after they found out he's from New York and called him "Yankee"

[–]amusedsithChild of Athena 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Ah thank you for correcting me its been a hot minute since I've read SOM

[–]Maxorus73Child of Athena 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Np

[–]ken-der-guru 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks. I think I remember now the thing with the Yankee cap.

[–]Maxorus73Child of Athena 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Gods have variable appearances. Plus Athena is like... Greek. Not a lot of native Greek blond people.

[–]Daemon-BlackbrierChild of Boreas 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Honestly, at this point, I don't care about casting so long as they're all competent actors.

[–]Percy-Dragneel 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Personally it didn’t matter if Grover stayed white or not, because he didn’t have an arc where his race or in other words what he looks like made any difference to the story.

[–]Tychi_the_apple_pieChild of Athena 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Simhadri certainly looks like Grover

[–]aaravosapologist 16 points17 points  (3 children)

Desi Grover makes me so happy as an Indian teen who read these books when I was younger :)

[–]DarhkBlu 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Excuse my ignorance but what does Desi stand for?

[–]zze44li 8 points9 points  (1 child)

someone who is of south asian descent

[–]aaravosapologist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No it’s just Bangladesh/India/Pakistan not all of South Asia

[–]PotatoGirl_7Child of Athena 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I guess I just have to say if Walker is Percy, Aryan is Grover.

[–]PickleChip12Magican 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Once again grover getting the shaft

[–]JefftheDoggoChild of Hermes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To be honest, I fucking love the Grover casting.

[–]Hemophob14Child of Dionysus 6 points7 points  (5 children)

TBH, I wonder why people seem to be far more positive Grover’s castings than Annabeth’s. I wasn’t around for the announcement of movie Grover, but I’ve seen people retroactively say they enjoyed it. I’ve not seen anyone really speak out of line about the show casting either.

[–]PhrophetsamChampion of Hestia 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Movie Grover was a pretty good actor (although the writing made of the character really wasn't like his book counterpart) and the idea of Grover as a POC was cemented by the movies.

[–]hesipullupjimbo22Child of Poseidon 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I think there’s 2 reasons

  1. Grover’s appearance in the books isn’t highlighted like Annabeth. She gets described often and well where as Grover it was mainly in TLT.

  2. The movies made people cool with a new version of grover. I for one like the playboy version of his character but I also know that’s a different imagining of him. Whereas this Annabeth isn’t a different version of her. She’s supposed to be the Annabeth from then books on screen.

I think that’s why people don’t have this massive problem with it

[–]grindlebald 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Also, additionally, to add on, people feel like annabeth is white, and Grover is POC. Ik he’s a ginger in the books, but I still always pictured him being black. I don’t think his hair or skin color are ever even mentioned

[–]WANTEN12 11 points12 points  (4 children)

to be fair annabeth is a major character in 9 of the 10 books

grover is only really important in 1 which is this one

[–]tedweirdChild of Athena 22 points23 points  (3 children)

I'd say he's a main character in TTC and BotL, at least

[–]TheDwarvesCarstChild of Poseidon 10 points11 points  (2 children)

Also Sea of Monsters, and part of The Last Olympian, so about 4.15 of the 5 books lol

[–]tedweirdChild of Athena 8 points9 points  (1 child)

I'd say he's only about half in SoM (being out of reach of the main protags til most of the way in) and he's only really in a handful of chapters of TLO?

[–]Swordofmytriumph 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Done forget him finding Pan in the labyrinth is hugely important to the plot

[–]NeonBladeAce 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm slightly saddened that the characters will look different, but glad to know that they will act the part well.

[–]Stealthgecko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Grover fits his part. I like it.

[–]YelenaxNatashaHunter of Artemis 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think it’s because everyone accepts him but Annabeths casting was controversial since they wanted a book accurate Annabeth

[–]StillAcanthocephala6Unclaimed 5 points6 points  (3 children)

Well the first live action Grover nailed the part, so people are cool with it.

[–]Gtaonline2122 45 points46 points  (2 children)

I mean he was cool but he didn't "nail the part". He was nothing like his book counterpart.

[–]StillAcanthocephala6Unclaimed 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Yea but going into the role knowing, I assume, that you don’t look like the character and may not be like the character is a hard thing. He did exceptionally well as a character, even made it his own to an extent.

[–]junzhyyChild of Aphrodite 3 points4 points  (0 children)

the extent stretches very far. no, the script was just shit. you can admit that both the staff and the actor didn't interpret grover correctly.

[–]granitdorf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s because Grover has a pretty vague discretion will annabeth has a we’ll known image
