Weekly Recommendation Thread - May 14, 2024

Welcome to the weekly recommendation thread that we stole from r/books! Ever since we got rid of the clutter from chapter update posts in here, there's been a growing number of threads asking for increasingly specific suggestions on what to read. These tend to be scattered in individual threads that branch off into more suggestions, which makes them more difficult to find. So we'll be clumping all of those together into a weekly thread that is much easier to browse.

The Rules:

  1. Every comment in reply to this self-post must be a request for suggestions.

  2. All suggestions made in this thread must be direct replies to other people's requests. Do not post suggestions in reply to this self-post.

  3. All unrelated comments will be deleted in the interest of cleanliness.

  4. Any replies/comments asking for aggregator or pirate sites to read something on will be deleted.

How to get the best recommendations:

The most successful recommendation requests include a description of the kind of book being sought. This might be a particular kind of protagonist, setting, plot, atmosphere, theme, or subject matter. You may be looking for something similar to another book (or film, TV show, game, etc), and examples are great! Just be sure to explain what you liked about them too. Other helpful things to think about are genre, length and reading level.

The "Help Me Find" threads asking for suggestions will be phased out over the coming weeks. All posts asking for suggestions/recommendations must be in this thread by August 1st, 2021. Any new threads asking for suggestions after that date will be removed.

What novels have authors that have a interesting take on mindset and morality? What novels have authors that have a interesting take on mindset and morality?
Discussion

Has anyone ever read a novel that has led them to seriously - even for a moment, ponder their own morality or way of thinking about things in life? Might anyone have a novel that comes to mind?

I was quite moved in Regressor's Tale of Cultivation with the Eun Hyeo's empathetic stance on many things, including: his insistence not to eat qi building pills due to his own witnessing of the suffering and anguish of the humans used in them, his care for his disciples , and his consideration beyond 'my race (human) and your race (demon) ' where he considers how they are also sentient beings and how a difference in race, and even appearances, no matter how disgusting their appearances , or even their adapted means of survival are to humans, he takes the time to judge who they are beyond that.
And his unyielding attitude towards progressing, not just in strength, but also in his resolve, philosophy and heart towards others.

To me, this kind of novel where the author takes the time to explore the characters philosophy, heart and resolve in turn provides a sense of direction towards growth for me. So I wonder what novels take a place in your heart too.
