I'm Dan Carlin , host of the Hardcore History and Common Sense podcasts AMA

I've done an AMA before in the history subreddit and I had a blast. It was great to be asked back to talk about politics (or whatever I guess, right?). Thanks for having me. For those who don't know, I do a couple of podcasts...one focusing on the past and one more on politics/current events. Shows are available via iTunes or my website at www.dancarlin.com

Podcasts like Dan Carlin?

Hello everyone, I recently discovered Dan Carlin and his podcasts. I really like listening to them while running , cooking etc. Planning on finishing them all in the very near future.

My question is, can anyone recommend more podcasts, websites, on any historical subject, please ? I am a complete beginner when it comes to audio books and podcasts so all this is very new and exciting! Any advice will be helpful and appreciated!

Thank you in advance!

Edit: Thank you everyone so so much!! I have enough stuff here to last me for a very long time !! Cheers everyone!

[AMA Request] Dan Carlin from Hardcore History & Common Sense podcasts

My 5 Questions:

  1. How did you become such an excellent orator?

  2. How long does it take you to prepare the presentation of the show compared to the historical research?

  3. How much of what you speak on a given episode especially in the HH podcast is spontaneous? Or do you do multiple takes involving both spontaneous and predetermined content and ultimately settle upon the final content?

  4. How much help do you have? Are your podcasts a "one man show" or a team effort?

  5. How large approximately is your audience, how many downloads do your shows get on average? Is there a single show that stands out? How does HH compare to CS in that respect?

  6. Can you tell us something about the demographic of your listeners? What do you know about "us"?

Public Contact Information: dan@dancarlin.com; booking@dancarlin.com

Edit: I fully expected this request to drown and am very positively surprised by your overwhelmingly positive reaction so thank you all! Also, I am hoping that some of the people who showed interest aren't already subscribed to r/dancarlin and that we managed to reach a broader audience here.

Dan Carlin Appreciation Post

Okay, in the same way people sometimes feel the need to get something off their chest, I have something to say. Hardcore History is not only my favorite podcast of all time, but it is the most enjoyable form of media I have ever consumed. Listening to a full Hardcore History Episode/Series is more enjoyable for me than listening to any other podcast/song or watching any other video/movie. I just needed to get off my chest how insanely good the podcast is and how much I love it

Favorite Dan Carlin Introduction?

One of the things I love most about Hardcore History are his introductions. They aren’t exactly tailored to the story, but they help establish the perspective he wants you to have before starting a show.

My favorite: was him telling us to write a book on the positives of Hitler the same way modern historians write about the positives of Khan. And how the death of millions of peasants do not matter anymore, which grounds us into the atrocities committed by Khan.

What’s your favorite start of an episode?
