My daughter is 14 and loves reading. She's at an age where it's been hard to find books that have complex enough stories to engage her but don't have content she's uncomfortable with. Primarily, the issue is finding books with romance but without sexual content. She would prefer to avoid even fade-to-black scenes. She's not a fan of a huge amount of swearing or violence either. She's mostly read YA books, but she'd definitely be open to adult books as long as they meet the criteria. And while the list below is primarily fantasy, she's not picky about genre.
Books she's liked:
-
All of the Brandon Sanderson books, YA and adult books.
-
The Cinder series (pretty much anything by Marissa Meyer)
-
Hunger Games
-
Percy Jackson (when she was a little younger)
-
The Selection series (at least the first few)
-
The Matched series
-
The Mirror Visitor series
-
The Kiss of Deception
-
Ruby Red trilogy by Kerstin Gier
-
Fable by Adrienne Young
-
Tweet Cute
-
Better Than the Movies
-
The Book Thief
Books she liked but had content she didn't like so she stopped reading them:
-
Ember in the Ashes series
-
I gave them to her for Christmas after having read it myself, but there was either a fade-to-black or a very vaguely worded sex scene that she was uncomfortable with.
-
-
The Alanna series by Tamara Pierce
-
Someone else recommended these, so I got them for her. She mentioned there were several references to sex (not sure if there were actual scenes) that she just didn't like so she stopped reading them.
-
-
These Violent Delights
-
Not sex-related. I picked this up for her on a whim at the library after I saw it was a Romeo and Juliette retelling, but she said it was really violent. To be fair, it is right there in the title. I just didn't think about it.

To be clear, this is not an issue of her being uncomfortable with the topic of sex in general, she just would prefer not to read about it in books and I get that. So please no comments about her seeming overly sensitive.
She's read The Hobbit and thought it was boring so I'm not sure she'd enjoy the Lord of the Rings. She's read Pride and Prejudice and liked it, so she's open to classics--feel free to suggest some that may appeal to her! I'm thinking she might like some classic mysteries like Sherlock Holmes or Agatha Christie. But it's also nice to have some easy, fun, and quick more modern books to read, too, and I'm struggling to find her some, especially with her interest in romance.
Thanks so much for your help! This sub is the best on reddit imho :)
