Spurs, Newcastle fire in front of 78,419 at MCG

By Roy Ward

Ange Postecoglou brought his Tottenham Hotspur side home to face Newcastle United and a crowd of 78,419 roared them on at the MCG on Wednesday night.

First-half goals from James Maddison and Alexander Isak saw the match tied 1-1 at full-time before a penalty shootout between those left on the field saw Newcastle win 5-4 with Aussie Garang Kuol among those to convert for the winners.

It was a proud homecoming for the former Socceroos, Melbourne Victory and South Melbourne boss who was cheered for his every move while Spurs captain Son Heung-min was also a huge drawcard judging from the volume of the stadium each time he came to the fore.

Son told media this week that his players had much improvement to make in year two of Postecoglou’s reign and they needed to drive that improvement themselves.

They showed some good signs in the first half as they pressed aggressively and made Newcastle uncomfortable, such pressing contributed to the first goal although goal-keeper Nick Pope would probably like his time again after a poor pass was intercepted by James Maddison at the top of the box and, after some tight dribbles, was smashed into the top corner of the goals.

Maddison gave the crowd the thumbs up after his goal but, perhaps following some urging from Son, he pulled out his trademark “darts” celebration which the local fans would have gratefully appreciated.

That lead looked like it would be in hand for half-time but just before the break, Newcastle wide man Jacob Murphy powered a low cross across the box which stand-in Spurs keeper Brandon Austin battered away, only for it to fall right into the path of top-scorer Alexander Isak couldn’t have missed the tap in if he tried.

The second half saw a raft of substitutes as both coaches tested out their younger or less used players.

Australia forward Garang Kuol came on with 20 minutes left to play and he received a huge roar, he was almost presented with a tap-in goal soon after arriving but Spurs managed to intercept before it could reach the unmarked Aussie.

Spurs players straight on a plane

They’ll be no sightseeing of Melbourne for the Tottenham players, who are straight on a plane following their friendly loss to Newcastle at the MCG.

As Ange Postecoglou said in the post-match press conference: “They deserve a break now”.

Spurs have now lost four of their last five matches against Newcastle.

Shots of Kuol penalty

Garang Kuol not only got to debut for Newcastle but also sink a penalty.

A nice moment for him, a nice moment for the Aussie crowd.

Newcastle win on penalties, Kuol sinks shot

And that’s it. Newcastle win on penalties after sinking all five of their shots. The only shot that didn’t go through in the shoot-out was Spurs’ Bryan Gil’s.

In a great moment for the Aussie (and Newcastle) crowd, Garang Kuol put through his kick. He went fourth, when Newcastle were up by one.

Here’s how those pens went...

Spurs’ Gil took the first penalty, it was saved.

Magpies’ Joe White took the second, it went through.

Dane Scarlett took the second for the Spurs, it went through.

Ben Parkinson took the second for the Magpies, it went through.

Jamie Donley went third for the Spurs, it went through.

Amadou Diallo went third for the Magpies, it went through.

Tyrese Hall went fourth for the Spurs, it went through.

Oliver Skipp went fifth for the Spurs, it went through.

Harrison Ashby went fifth for the Magpies, it went through.

Here we go… pens

That’s full-time at 1-1.

So, we’re heading to pens. Time to see some net.

Why do we need a result for a friendly? Bit of fun, really.

Although the players, look, to be frank, a bit exhausted by the thought.

We’re going straight to pens

That’s a bit of fun. They’ll be no extra time tonight with the game going straight to penalties if the score remains the same at full-time.

So far, that’s looking likely. Although that might be extra motivation for the jet-lagged players to put one away, so they can put themselves away.

Also a bit of experience for the younger ones, as all the starters are now sitting on the bench.

Tottenham 1 Newcastle 1, 89 minutes.

Spurs doing all the attacking

Emerson Royal had a header to the right side of the six yard box following a corner, but it was missed.

It followed an attempted miss from a Spurs player Dane Scarlett, who had a shot from the centre of the box.

Tottenham keep attacking, Newcastle keep defending. The score stays the same.

Tottenham 1 Newcastle 1, 83 minutes.

Everyone’s getting a turn

Even more subs roll in - which can’t be said of the goals (or shots, really).

Spurs goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario has come on to replace Brandon Austin in front of the net.

Another change from Ange: Radu Dragusin and has also come off, replaced by Tyrese Hall.

For Newcastle, Lucas De Bolle is replaced by Bruno Guimarães, Ciaran Thompson is replaced by Emil Krafth, Travis Hernes is replaced by Elliot Anderson and Dylan Charlton replaced by Lewis Hall.

Kuol makes Newcastle debut

That’s a nice moment.

Garang Kuol has come on and made his debut in the black and white stripes in front of his home crowd.

Kuol left Australia at the end of 2022 as an audacious 18-year-old talent but has struggled overseas.

He joined the Premier League club at the start of 2023 on a four-year deal, and spent his first two seasons in Europe on loan – with Heart of Midlothian in the Scottish League and then with Dutch outfit FC Volendam. He has struggled for game time and scored just two goals across 23 matches.

But it’s nice to see him out on the park tonight.

Newcastle make three more team changes

The Magpies have made three changes.

Amadou Diallo, Alex Murphy and Harrison Ashby have all come on, with Harvey Barnes, Dan Burn and Harrison Ashby all off the park.
