Double of the minimum wage in my country is still poverty

In many countries.

Double minimum wage in most US states is either right at the poverty line or even just below it.

Double minimum wage in any US state is at least $20k below the inflation adjusted poverty line.

I made triple the minimum wage at a warehouse. Bang on 21.75, after a couple years of raises. I hope I make at least that doing this work.

Rural Eastern washington here, double minimum wage at full time is over 5k a month, and our bills in total are under 2k, that would be a very comfortable living

u/nicki419 avatar

Isn't minimum Wage $2.14?

[deleted]
[deleted]

Not an American, but I'm pretty sure that's just for serving work, like waiters and waitresses. And I'm also pretty sure that employers are supposed to top you up to the real minimum wage if your tips come up short

u/nicki419 avatar

Very true, but realistically, will an employer who's actually paying you that little really top it up?

What?

u/nicki419 avatar

My bad, $2.13 for "tipped employees". $7.25 otherwise. That's insane...

I agree, even me who isn’t exactly an old timer but I’ve been coding professionally for 20 years. 🤷‍♂️

Yeah, let's give them even more incentive to outsource engineers.

u/iGotPoint999Problems avatar

Spoken like a true middle manager. . . I kid, but for reals even outsourced eng’s would benefit, just saying. I’m not some huge proponent, just making a joke, because double min wage is fucking worthless.

Well... I'm latinamerican and I've seen many job ads for American companies. I would really help me if more RoR devs from here were required. =)

Also, why not move here? Spanish is not that hard, good food, more value to your money, until your not so foreign bosses pay you. I think a fourth of your current yearly income is delivered to latinamerican devs. Still, in some cities that is more than enough.

🤔

Yeah, let's lower the bar, and at best stop social progress, at worst regress, just because greedy companies want cheap labor and we're soooo afraid they'll outsource.

That's an amazing way to handle the situation and definitely won't backfire.

Have you ever made decisions at a corporation? I have, and we aren't blinded by greed. We're still human.

What would happen if you started your own company tomorrow, would you suddenly become evil and lose all morals?

By the way, they are already outsourcing heavily. A lot. Not sure if you've heard of programmers struggling to land a job, or maybe you've read about domestic layoffs.

Unions were great during the industrial revolution while federal regulations caught up. Now they are just like any other progressive power structure with money flowing to the top - pushing to be "anywhere but here" to justify their continued existence.

They’re already outsourcing when/where they can. Getting a Union established would probably actually save some teams from having their jobs outsourced.

Minimum wage in Ireland is €26k. Average industrial wage is €38k.

Cost of living still means you'd be hard pressed living on two €38k incomes, but, well, that's just the dying middle class.

average industry 38k is like the lowest of the low.

heck i'm Italy wich doesn't have stellar wager but i still make considerable more than 38k

More replies

Still not bad for kids first jobs straight out of school.

Bro MIGHT be Brazilian 🗣️

u/closetBoi04 avatar

In the Netherlands it'd be €4600/month which is €1000 above median, not bad for a first job

I got about double minimum wage for my first summer job in programming (after second year of uni). After the third year they hired me again with a 60% raise. I had my BS by then, but double minimum wage was really underpaid.

Right, double the average wage is something. But 4x average is actually decent.

Pretty much me in my current job.

Got into the interview because my Mam was friends with two people working here.

"So, do you know any Java? Any web development?"

"Zero. I did Python in Uni for Data Analysis"

They took me on as a low-risk experiment, to see if I'd learn anything useful. After two months they ended my probation early and offered me a pay rise. After a year and a half they bumped me up to double the minimum wage, which is significantly above median industrial wage.

Happy.

Hell yeah! That's awesome! Congratulations on your raise/promotion!

Double my country’s minimum wage is less than my state’s minimum wage. If you don’t make double the state’s minimum wage you’re poor.

May i ask in wich company?

u/theintern69 avatar

Or in my case.
Get offered lower than minimum wage for internship
No offer letter or anything for a month while working there
Get offer letter after a month of working and it says it is now an unpaid, educational internship opportunity
Won't be paid a dime for 4 out of 6 months of the contract period
:)

Try to leave this shitty employer asap.

And as a german I am generally confused by this story, as I am used to sign contracts BEFORE I start working. At least try to get a draft of a contract before you start working somewhere.

u/theintern69 avatar

Oh i left them alright, it was a dogshit startup anyways.

They tried to threaten me lol. Told em to go fuck themselves.

I was unemployed for two whole weeks before i landed a junior role at another company where i am being paid 6 times what the previous place promised to pay me during my internship interview.

u/jamcdonald120 avatar

double minimum wage of country? As a programmer?

At my first internships I was making between 3x and 4x minimum wage. If it was full time, I would have been making double the poverty rate.

Maybe try to find a better company, even starting, you should be making at least 3x poverty rate.

You’re still getting paid less than the value you bring to the company.

u/tomaar19 avatar

Yea that's how the company is able to keep existing

u/plugubius avatar

I dream of a country why my employer pays me more than the mere value of what I bring to the company, but cannot legally fire me.

u/HawasYT avatar

The "mere" value of what you bring to the company is the absolute maximum your employer can pay you without losing money or screwing over some other guy - assuming the operating costs of your employer are none which obviously they won't be.

Your dream job is probably being CEO like John Riccitiello who I bet paid himself handsomely while his only contribution was losing Unity's market value and prolly scaring away a lot of customers but even then he ended up being fired

u/plugubius avatar

Where do you draw the line? Are you're going to tell me that my salary should reflect my contributions to society rather than my own immeasurable merit as a human being?

You wouldn't be employed at all if you didn't. How could it work any other way?

u/HawasYT avatar

That would be true even if they were self-employed so I'm not exactly sure what do you expect

Exploitation is as exploitation does.

What you want? Get more than the value you bring? That's a sure way to be unemployed pretty quickly.

Workers deserve the full worth of the value they bring. Not less. Not more.  Currently, CEOs and executives take in far more than the value they bring. They can only do this because they take that value out of the value we bring.

The company that gave you your job can't give you the full value you bring in because it will go bust if it does.....please please sit and think about this for a moment before posting a reply....why would they employ you at all if they got nothing from it?

Even if its your own company you would pay yourself a salary lower than the total money the company makes because you should be investing most of it into the company itself or paying other employees from that money. Yes even owners do not pay themselves the full worth of the value they bring else their company will go bust eventually.

With double minimum wage I don’t think I could make rent. People here are really poor.

I used to be a butcher while I was a student , I was making around 20$/hr (which was pretty much the best salary for the job at the time regardless of experience). In about two years after my internship I make about two times as much.It does feel good

Minimum wage in California is $20 ($41.6k)

u/ieatpickleswithmilk avatar

if you're at one of the silicon valley tech giants your internship pays like 80k+ and then when they offer you a job you get a signing bonus of like 50k+ and then you start the job and make in the mid 100s from the start. Some of my buddies shared a house down there and made bank, saving like 6-7k a month

u/mas-issneun avatar

Double the minimum wage? Is the pay disparity that different outside of the states/canada? Even a SE 1 at my company makes 4 times minimum wage, just starting out.

In Germany, that would be a solid income for a junior.

double mininum wage in ANY country is them absolutely screwing you and not paying you what even a newb programmer is worth.

Double the minimum wage is absolutely not what a newb programmer is worth in any average western European country.
