Updates to the Google Workspace Marketplace

What’s changingIn 2023, we introduced the ability for admins to install Google Chat apps to direct messages on behalf of users within their domain from the Google Workspace Marketplace. Now, end users can also discover and install Google Chat apps from the Google Workspace Marketplace.

Additionally, users can now open the Google Workspace Marketplace directly from within Chat. This will include an enhanced browsing experience with curated app categories such as “Intelligent apps”. Lastly, developers can start publishing Chat apps on the Google Workspace Marketplace, allowing users to more easily discover, install and use the apps.

Additional details Chat app users can now leave reviews and flag any inappropriate Chat apps directly from the Marketplace app listing.

Getting started

Admins: Installation and usage of Chat apps for end users will be ON by default. Visit the Help Center to learn more about controlling user access to Marketplace apps and allowing users to install Chat apps.
End users: Visit the Help Center to learn more about using apps in Google Chat.
Developers: Visit the Help center to learn more about building Google Chat apps, publishing into the Workspace Marketplace and getting Chat apps featured.

Bulk select in Gmail on Android and iOS devices We’re introducing a feature that enables you to bulk select a batch of messages in the email threadlist with one tap using the Gmail app on Android and iOS devices. After clicking the select all icon, a batch of messages will be selected, enabling you to easily perform email actions such as deleting multiple messages or marking them as “read”. | This feature is available now on Android devices and is rolling out now to Rapid Release and Scheduled Release domains on iOS devices. | Available to all Google Workspace customers and users with personal Google Accounts.

Allow users to install and run any internal app from Marketplace

What’s changingWe’re introducing a new admin setting to control whether users can install and run any internal app from the Google Workspace Marketplace along with their allowlisted third-party apps. This added admin feature gives more controls to customize users’ access to trusted internal apps based on their company policies, security requirements and user needs.
Currently, admins can leverage Marketplace apps access settings to choose to allow users to access all internal and third-party apps or specific allowlisted internal and third party apps published in the Marketplace. Many organizations build internal apps and add-ons specifically for for their organization, and this added admin control saves admins time by allowing them to distribute all internally-built apps with a single click, rather than managing and allowlisting each one.

Why it matters This requested feature enables admins to have added control over app access settings.

Additional details With this new setting, admins can allow any internal app, but still limit the installation of third-party apps. Internal apps are apps that are privately-published in your organization.

Getting started

Admins:

This setting will be OFF by default and can be enabled by going to the Admin console > Menu > Apps > Google Workspace Marketplace apps > Settings. Visit the Help Center to learn more about managing Marketplace apps on your allowlist.
For organizations using API controls to restrict app access to the user data, consider checking the Trust internal apps setting to allow API access for all internal apps.

End users: If enabled by their admin, you can install any internal app from the Marketplace by going to workspace.google.com/marketplace/mydomainapps.

Independent Security Verification badge in the Google Workspace Marketplace

This announcement is part of Google Cloud Next ‘23. Visit the Workspace Blog to learn more about latest security updates and the next wave of AI innovation in Workspace.

What’s changingBeginning today, you’ll see a new independent security verification badge for select apps in the Google Workspace Marketplace. This badge indicates that the app was validated by an independent security assessor to meet the integration and security requirements, as outlined in Tier 3 of the Cloud Application Security Assessment.

In the Marketplace, you can already see app information like information about app access to user data, who the developer is and their privacy policies, and more. Surfacing this additional app security information helps admins make an even more informed decision before installing or allowlisting apps for their users.

Note that passing an independent security assessment is an annual requirement for apps in the Recommended for Workspace category and optional for all other Marketplace apps.

What’s changingGoogle Chat apps integrate with productivity tools, enable you to collaborate with others, and can also help automate your work. Previously, to start using an app in Chat, users had to individually install apps as described here.
Starting this week, admins can install Chat apps for direct messages on behalf of users within their domain from the Workspace Marketplace. Users will automatically see when an app has been enabled, eliminating the need to manually install the app themselves.
Admins can deploy Chat apps as they see fit: to an entire domain, OU, or group of users using the Workspace Marketplace apps management controls.

Why you’d use it This feature enables admins to provide their users with instant access to the Chat integrations they need for their workflow within an organization.
Getting started

Admins:

Visit the Help Center to learn more about installing Marketplace apps in your domain and allowing users to install Chat apps.

When a Chat app is installed for an end-user, they will be automatically notified.

End users cannot uninstall the apps installed by admins, but they can turn notifications OFF.
See the list of Chat apps available from Google and consider performing an admin install from the Marketplace (using your administrator account).

End users:

End users will continue to be able to install chat apps from Chat. Installation from the Workspace Marketplace isn't available for end users at this time.
When a Chat app is installed by your admin, you will be automatically notified.

Granular controls for app allowlisting in the Google Workspace Marketplace

Admins can now choose which Google Workspace Marketplace apps are available to be installed by users in a particular department (OU) or group by managing Marketplace apps on their allowlist. Previously, admins could only manage the allowlist for an entire domain. Additionally, the Marketplace apps access settings, Allow all apps, Allow selected apps, and Block all apps, can now be set for your entire organization or for an OU or group. This new functionality provides a solution when only a subset of domain users need permissions to install certain Marketplace apps. New and updated third-party DevOps integrations for Google Chat, including PagerDuty

What’s changingWe’re introducing and updating a variety of additional DevOps integrations, which will allow you to take action on common workflows directly in Google Chat:

Apps such as Google Cloud Build, Asana, GitHub, Jenkins and more, have been updated with new functionality:

Using Slash commands for quick actions such as creating a new Asana task or triggering a build in Jenkins or Google Cloud Build.
Ability to use Dialogs for important flows such as setting up the app, or entering detailed info such as creating a GitHub issue.

Operations and incident response professionals can use the new PagerDuty integration to take action on PagerDuty incidents from Chat. From Chat, you’ll be able to:
Receive notifications of PagerDuty incidents right from Google Chat.
Take action, including acknowledging and resolving incidents without leaving the conversation.

Quick summary Google Workspace developers can now create Google Workspace add-ons that attach files to a Google Calendar event from any third-party service. This feature enables developers to create add-ons that support attachments from a wide range of sources beyond Google Drive, such as digital whiteboard, content creation, or file management tools.

Users who have the relevant add-ons installed will be able to attach files from these sources to a Calendar event, and attendees can view the event with the attachment on the web or on mobile.

Quick launch summaryAdmins can now install Google Workspace Marketplace applications for specific groups in their organization using the new “admin-install” functionality (formerly known as “domain-install”). Previously, admin-installing applications from the Google Workspace Marketplace was only possible for organizational units or an entire domain.

This is useful in situations where only a subset of your users need to have the app installed, for example CRM applications required for your sales and marketing groups or e-signature applications required for your legal teams.

What’s changingIn the Google Workspace Marketplace, you’ll now see more information about apps available in the Marketplace. Specifically, you’ll see the following information:

Overview: Information about the app developer, including quick links to their site, privacy policy, and terms of service.
Permissions: App permissions to review to assess whether the app data access complies with your organization’s policies.
Reviews: Reviews and replies provided by other users who have installed the app.

Why it’s importantBefore installing Google Workspace Marketplace app to users in their domain, admins can review important information about the application, such as developer information, permissions the applications require, and more. This additional information will help you make a more informed decision when deploying apps to your users.

Getting started

Admins: Visit the Help Center to learn more about managing Google Workspace Marketplace Apps for your organization. If you allow your users to install any app from the Marketplace, the “Approved for you” section will be hidden.
End users: To view applications in the Marketplace approved by your admin, visit the “Approved for you” section of the Google Workspace Marketplace.

What’s changing The new “Approved for You” section in the Google Workspace Marketplace allows users to quickly see and install applications that have been approved and allowlisted by their admins.

Who’s impacted Admins and end users

Why it’s important Admins can specify which third-party apps their users can install from the Google Workspace Marketplace. With the addition of the “Approved for you” section in the Marketplace, users can quickly find and install pre-approved apps for Gmail, Drive, Editors, Calendar, and more.

Getting started

Admins: Visit the Help Center to learn more about managing Google Workspace Marketplace Apps for your organization. If you allow your users to install any app from the Marketplace, the “Approved for you” section will be hidden.
End users: To view applications in the Marketplace approved by your admin, visit the “Approved for you” section of the Google Workspace Marketplace.

Rollout pace

Rapid Release and Scheduled Release domains: Extended rollout (potentially longer than 15 days for feature visibility) starting on June 8, 2021

Availability

Available to Google Workspace Business Starter, Business Standard, Business Plus, Enterprise Standard, Enterprise Plus, Education Fundamentals, Education Plus, and Nonprofits, as well as G Suite Basic and Business customers

Quick Summary Google Workspace Add-ons are now available for Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides. Google Workspace Add-ons are already available for Calendar, Gmail, and Google Drive.

Google Workspace Add-ons allow you to use third-party applications within Google Workspace, helping you get work done faster without switching from one app to another.
Organizations can also create add-ons using Apps Script or alternative runtimes — use the Google Workspace Developer guide for add-ons to learn more about building add-ons.

Enhancing Google Workspace Add-ons in Gmail with Compose-time functions

Quick launch summary We’re enhancing the way you work with Google Workspace Add-ons in Gmail with the addition of Compose-time functions. Compose-time functions can help modify and format your messages in Gmail faster by:

Adding recipients in the “To”, “CC”, and “BCC” fields.
Inserting content into the subject line and body of the email.
Inserting message templates for a consistent look and feel for your communications, and more.

Organizations can also create their own compose-time add-ons using Apps Script or alternative runtimes. Use the Google Workspace Developer Guide to learn more about building compose actions.
Getting started

Admins: In the Admin Console, you can specify which applications your users can install from the Google Workspace Marketplace. You can also install chosen Google Workspace Add-ons for your entire domain via the listing in the Google Workspace Marketplace.
End users: If allowed by your admin, you’ll be able to install Google Workspace Add-ons using the “+” button in the Google Workspace quick access side panel. The add-ons you install will appear in the side panel across Google Workplace apps.

Rollout pace

Compose time add-ons are available now in the Google Workspace Marketplace.

Availability

Available to Essentials, Business Starter, Business Standard, Business Plus, Enterprise Essentials, Enterprise Standard, Enterprise Plus, G Suite Basic, Business, Education, Enterprise for Education, and Nonprofits customers (when enabled by admins) and users with personal accounts.

What’s changing Last year, we launched app access control to help all G Suite and Cloud Identity customers control access to G Suite data via OAuth 2.0 by third-party and domain-owned apps. Now, we're improving it by allowing admins to block apps from accessing any OAuth 2.0 scopes. This makes it easy for customers to quickly restrict apps that are deemed to be high-risk or compromised.
If an app is blocked, it will not be able to access any data from Google services. It will be blocked whether the app is on iOS, Android, or the web. If users try to authorize the app, they’ll see an authorization error message. Admins can customize this error message if they choose.

Who’s impacted Admins

Why you’d use it
G Suite has a robust developer ecosystem, with thousands of apps available via the G Suite Marketplace and directly to customers, and a rich API framework enabling customers to develop custom apps. Not all apps, however, conform to every enterprise customer’s security policy, so our customers and partners value controls to manage third-party apps accessing G Suite data.
Previously, admins could trust or limit access by specific apps. Now, we’re streamlining this to make it easier to manage potentially thousands of apps, and to help you to more quickly block apps when needed. By adding an option to block an app, you can quickly and efficiently protect data when an app is compromised or high-risk.

You can now block app access to OAuth 2.0 scopes via the Admin console.

Apps can now be trusted, limited, or blocked.

Getting started

Admins: Go to Admin console > Security > API controls > App access control to start using the feature. Visit the Help Center to learn more about how to control which third-party & internal apps access G Suite data.
End users: There is no end user setting for this feature.

Rapid and Scheduled Release domains: Full rollout (1–3 days for feature visibility) starting on July 21, 2020

Availability

We’ve made several updates to the Admin console interface. Specifically, we’ve:

Streamlined the API client access page
Improved and expanded the G Suite Marketplace apps (GSM) settings
Made it easier to manage admin role assignments
Created a new interface for domain management
Updated the unmanaged users and consumer account invite section

Streamlined the API client access page

The API client access page helps you grant API access to internal or 3rd-party apps, especially those using service accounts, on behalf of your users. We’ve created a simpler view of all apps that are authorized for domain-wide delegation and all authorized scopes, with service account and app name details. Updates to this view include:

A new location for the page. It’s now found at Security > API Controls > Domain-wide Delegation. It was previously at Security > Advanced settings.
Improved interface, with more information and clearer UI, which makes it easier to see, understand, and manage apps and scopes.
Removed applications domain-installed from G Suite Marketplace (GSM) from this view (they’re now in the GSM settings section, detailed below.)

Improved and expanded G Suite Marketplace apps (GSM) settings section

The GSM section helps you control which GSM apps your organization can use. Updates in this section include:

General interface updates to several pages, including Admin console > Apps > G Suite Marketplace whitelist, Admin console > Apps > Settings for G Suite Marketplace apps, and Admin console > Apps > Domain install G Suite Marketplace apps.
Functionality updates when you click into a specific app on the Domain install G Suite Marketplace apps page, including:

A new “partially approved” status, in addition to "approved" and "not approved" to provide more visibility into data permissions for apps.
New grouping for data access scopes by API buckets (e.g. "Gmail," "Calendar," etc) to make it easier to understand app data access.
The OAuth client ID for the app.

Easier to manage admin role assignments

We’ve made updates to the area where you can view, create and assign admin roles within your organization. Improvements include:

A new roles home page, where you can quickly see all the system and custom roles and the admins assigned those roles.
New quick-action buttons to more easily understand role privileges, then add and manage users in those roles.
Easier ways to create and assign custom roles, including ability to copy an existing role.

New interface for domain management in the Admin console

We’ve updated the interface you use to manage your primary domain, secondary domains, and domain aliases. When you go to Admin console > Domains > Manage domains, you may notice:

An updated interface with more complete information and descriptions of items and domain state.
New grouped action buttons which make it easier to see and select the action you want to take, such as verifying domains, changing your primary domain, setting up MX records, and more.
A new side panel which shows information about domains registered through Google, enabling you to quickly see and manage renewals and advanced DNS settings.

Updated the unmanaged users and consumer account invite section

We’re making improvements to the interface you use to find and manage users who have personal Google Accounts that use your organization's domain. Through this interface you can invite them to join your domain so you can better manage their accounts and any company data within it.

Specifically, when you go to Admin console > Tools > Transfer tool for unmanaged users, you’ll find an updated interface that makes it easier to:

Switch between managed and unmanaged account views.
See and filter users with personal accounts.
Invite them to migrate that account to your G Suite organization.
