Steve Steve

Steve played some solid golf in that good good major. Especially through the first 14 holes (can’t remember the exact number)

He could’ve easily been -5 through 11 or 12 holes. Just kept leaving birdie puts short but were dead center cup

He’s come a long way I’d written him off as someone who wouldn’t care enough to try to improve

He actually played such simple and easy golf. His putting has always been pretty good, but his short game has come a long way. He has a very score-able game if he can keep this up, baby fade that reliably eliminates the left miss with all of his clubs. Easy 260-280 in the fairway off the tee that isn’t ever really going to get him into too much trouble (once you start hitting bombs 300+ your misses get a lot more dangerous on most golf holes, especially courses under 7000 yards from whatever tee you’re playing)

Happy for the young man, he mentioned early on that pressure doesn’t get to him. But you could tell once it fully sank in that he was legitimately 3 under with his own ball and could potentially have a great round of golf it started to get to him. Which isn’t surprising having career rounds, especially when you’ve got a good shot at going low, can get to the best of us.

Hopefully he keeps putting the work in, he lit up like Christmas tree at the end wouldn’t be surprised if this experience finally gave him the golf bug. Golf is addictive when you’re not very good, it’s meth when you see your potential and start playing good golf.

Man that was cool to see, props to Steve

Divots Divots

I just finished watching the GG Cup video and couldn't help noticing the size of the divots that particularly Garrett (among others) was taking out of the fairways. And then not fixing/replacing them?

Maybe they're just not filmed, but I watch a lot of Rick Shiels, Peter Finch and Luke Kwon content and they seem to do it automatically after hitting their shots.

I'm not particularly anal about fixing divots myself, I mean I'll do it when I hit a good shot (bad shots I'm walking swearing) or take out a big piece of turf. But for guys who play golf for a living on some of the nicest courses in the world, I would expect better.

YouTube Golf Analytics for June 2024 (How big was the Bryson Bump?) YouTube Golf Analytics for June 2024 (How big was the Bryson Bump?)

I always like the June/July/August months of YouTube golf, creators seem to try the most, views are high, AdSense dollars are flowing, and everyone is happy. June 2024 was no exception, with almost everyone bringing in more views than the month before.

We start with Bryson DeChambeau. In a month where he won a major (the U.S. Open) and throughout both the commentary and his own interviews plugged his YouTube channel pretty comprehensively, how big was the jump from the mainstream audience? Well, how does bringing in an additional 3m views sound? Bryson pulled in 17.4m in June, just shy of the high water mark for YouTube Golf (17.6m, set by Good Good during their first UK trip, Aug. 2022). Now, it must be stated that a significant amount of Bryson's view count does come from shorts and not traditional long-form content, but my analytics do not differentiate between the two at this time. While I have not included Golfing YouTubers who predominantly post shorts in my analysis (or else Grace Charis would be on top almost every month - 117.8m views in March 2024 alone!), Bryson uses shorts to accentuate his long-form content, so I will not hold it against him. More importantly, Bryson gained a staggering 148,000 new subscribers. Just an insane month. We'll see if he can keep the momentum for July and August.

Good Good, dethroned for the first time last month, struck back with their highest view count generating content strategy - the Good Good Cup. If Bryson hadn't won the U.S. Open, it likely would have put them back on top. For June, the boys brought in 15.3m views and a healthy jump of 60k subscribers. Those numbers represent their third best month in both categories. With a Good Good Major at Payne's Valley upcoming which should bring in millions of views, we'll see what July has in store for the crew. One thing is clear though - there's a major fight at the top now. Good Good can no longer rest on their laurels, which should hopefully lead to better content for all.

That fight at the top, at least for now, is a clear three-way fight due to the relative resurgence of Rick Shiels. Rick missed out on second place by less than 40k views with his 15.29m views. With the Open coming up, Rick should be able to give GG and Bryson another close month for July.

Bob Does Sports didn't have the huge jumps that other channels had for June, but they did have their best month ever so far with 8.8m views off of Bob's hole in one. Definitely good for the program to get one of those. However, you can't hit one of those every month, so we'll see if the positive movement is a trend or an aberration next month.

GM Golf keeps the views steady at 6.2m. While Garrett's personal channel no longer brings in the views it used to, it has remained consistent, which is probably all Garrett wants so he can work more on Good Good.

A rising tide lifts all boats, and Grant Horvat was lifted to his best month in June 2024 with 5.8m views off the backs of collabs with Bryson, Jon Rahm, and a 18-hole competition with Bryan Bros at Pinehurst No. 2 (where the U.S. Open was played). Grant is proving surprisingly adroit at picking his collabs and video timing drops. I was shocked that Grant was able to get a full stroke play video with Rahm before GG did (considering both are still signed to Callaway), but it is what it is.

I want to talk about Peter Finch. I know Mick sometimes reads this - while his "Quest for the Open" series ended in tears due to a bad round in Regional Qualifying, it did bring in six months of steadily increasing views, which is hard to do on YouTube. Finchy brought in 3.3m views in June, which according to my data is his best month ever. I think if Pete was thinking about doing it again next year, I definitely think there's something there for his channel. Probably some diminishing returns if he tried it every year, but a "Quest for the Open 2025: Revengeance" series next year could do numbers, especially if Pete films more of his prep work! Show those full training sessions he was doing on the sim that happened off screen! I also think that, coming off the performance in Regional Qualifying and the twitter/discord responses after, if Pete could film a video with a sports psychologist, that might do gangbusters.

Bryan Bros notched another modest growth month in the books, bringing in 200k more than last month with 2.6m views. I personally expected a bit more of a jump as they finally finished their golf course, but some growth is better than no growth.

Some rapid fire results:

  • Taco Golf, 809k - 5 month growth streak broken.

  • Micah Morris, 775k (worst month ever).

  • Luke Kwon, 1.56m (two months of views decreasing).

  • BustaJack, 868k.

  • ForePlay Golf, 4.1m.
